Hi!

I am the author of CROSS CHASE (a universal 8-bit game that runs on nearly any 8-bit system).
https://github.com/Fabrizio-Caruso/CROSS-CHASE
I can produce binaries for TI 82/83/83+/85/86 but I am not able to load my game.
In particular
for the TI-85 I can produce a raw binary and a .85s file
for the TI-86 I can produce a raw binary and a .86p file

I have tried to load the .85s into an emulated TI-85 with different emulators.

I have failed loading it directly.

I have tried to install Rigel and have not managed: I always get “transfer errors”.

Who could please help me getting Rigel into any TI-85 emulator?

I have tried VTI, ti86emu, tilem and nothing seems to work.

I have the right roms for the models.

TI-85 shells must be loaded via backup files, and I believe the calculator must be set up to receive a backup before the transfer will succeed. The older calculators required you to manually go into the LINK menu and select the receive mode for the appropriate type of data before sending the file into the emulator (or a real calculator).

Once the backup for a compatible shell is loaded correctly, then you would send your executable, start the shell (normally via the CUSTOM menu), and then run it from there.

As I recall, the TI-82 is similar, but starting the shell is somewhat different. I think it was via the PRGM menu like ordinary programs?

Sure but how?
I know I need a shell. I even know which one I need for my game on the TI-85. I need the Rigel shell.
I don't know how to load Rigel into an emulated TI-85.
I have tried multiple options with different emulators including VTI but I always get a Transfer Error.
Could you please provide the exact instructions?
I have the right roms and VTI starts correctly.
I have Rigel and the RIGEL.85B file.
How can I load Rigel under, say, VTI?
I have tried Send File to VTI. I have tried to enable the cable with different options.
Nothing has worked for me.

It's been a long time since I've done anything with this model, but from the manual, try pressing [2nd] [LINK] (on the x-var key), then RECV from the menu. Then try the send of the .85b file.

You are right that loading backup files (into an emulator or into a
real calculator too, for that matter) has always been a little flaky.
But it definitely should be possible.

Before loading a backup file, it may help to turn the calculator off
and back on again. (Even after resetting - reset calc, turn on, turn
off, turn on again, then try to send the backup.)

Using TilEm 2, IIRC, the process should be
- load the ROM file
- right click > reset calculator
- turn on
- turn off
- turn on
- right click > send file > select the backup
- see a warning message on the calc screen
- press the appropriate key to accept the backup
