Gampopa’s Instructions on Bodhicitta & the Creation (Kyerim) and Completion (Dzogrim) Stages
Lord Gampopa said, “In the Mahayana tradition, whatever one does—may it be upholding vows, accumulating merits and purifying obscurations, or practicing generosity—the physical act is not most important; rather the intention is most important. Therefore, before engaging in any Dharma practice, it is crucial to cultivate a completely pure motivation, in particular, bodhicitta (the mind of enlightenment) in its extensive, middling, or brief forms. Dorje Lopön Dr. Hun Lye will explain this at the start of our retreat.
To enter the gate of the Secret Mantra (Vajrayana), Lord Gampopa taught the methods of the two stages—generation and completion. For those who desire to achieve the Completion Stage, the Generation Stage is taught to be like the steps of a staircase. The meditation on the Generation Stage consists of six topics—divisions, nature, definition, purpose, measure of stability, and result. Dorje Lopön Dr. Hun Lye will explain them and highlight how we can directly apply it to our Mani practice; in particular, replacing ordinary perception with a stable, vivid visualization of the deity; understanding all forms, sounds, and thoughts as being of illusory nature like a rainbow, or an echo, and expressions of primordial wisdom; and realizing all phenomena being merely concepts, empty of inherent existence; thus, enabling us to experience the true nature of our mind being uncontrived and boundless .
The Mani Retreat
Chenrezig is renowned as the embodiment of compassion of all the Buddhas, and is known by many different names, including Avalokiteshvara in India and Guanyin in China. It is said that all the Buddha’s 84 000 teachings are contained in his mantra, Om Mani Padme Hum (Hrih), which has the power to invoke the blessings of lineage gurus, buddhas, and bodhisattvas of all times and to purify all obscurations. We develop the enlightened quality of loving kindness, compassion, and bodhicitta through Chenrezig practice and mantra recitation as well as by our compassionate conduct toward all beings. By continuously chanting Chenrezig’s mantra intensively, practitioners acquire a vast amount of merit, which is then dedicated toward World Peace, good health, prosperity, and the enlightenment of all seintient beings. Read more at https://www.ratnashri.se/Mani_retreat.htm We will apply Gampopa’s instructions on the Creation and Completion Stages bestowed by Dorje Lopön Dr. Lye to our practice. Khenpo Chöpel will give teachings and lead the Mani practice in the two afternoons.
The Bodhisattva Vows and the Mahamudra Teachings
His Eminence Garchen Rinpoche explains, “The reason we are truly able to receive the Bodhisattva vows online, is due to the ultimate nature of the Three Jewels—the Buddha, Dharma, and the Sangha—whose ultimate nature is actually love, which is all-pervasive like space. So if we have the heart and intention of love, we receive the vows whether or not we are physcially present for the ceremony. The Bodhisattva Vow can only be taken after you have taken the Refuge Vow. The Bodhisattva Vow represents our commitment to the altruistic intent of attaining Buddhahood for the benefit of all beings, and the commitment to living and acting in accordance with the bodhisattva's path”. Take this precious opportunity to receive the Bodhisattva Vows for the first time or to renew them step by step under the supreme guidance of Ven. Khenchen Konchog Gyaltshen Rinpoche. Rinpoche will also give teachings on Mahamudra or the Great Seal, referring to the ultimate nature of reality, the mind's true nature, and the union of wisdom and emptiness. Ven. Khenchen Rinpoche said, “Cultivating bodhicitta is the highway to attain Mahamudra, the Buddhahood”.
Biography of Dorjé Lopön Dr. Hun Lye
Venerable Dorjé Lopön Dr. Hun Lye grew up in a Buddhist home in Malaysia. From a young age, he studied and practiced Buddhism with teachers of various traditions. He met his first Tibetan teacher in the United States when he was an undergraduate student. After earning a doctorate degree in Buddhist Studies at University of Virginia and teaching for ten years in American academic institutions, Dr. Lye left academia to devote his energy fully to Dharma work. In 2013, he was appointed as a Dorjé Lopön (lit. “vajra-master”) of the Drigung Kagyu Lineage by H.H. Drigung Kyabgon Chetsang Rinpoche and was formally enthroned and charged with the responsibility of transmitting the teachings and practices of the lineage that he has himself received and practiced well. Then he was sent by His Holiness to visit and teach at Drigung centers in South America. When not teaching, leading retreats, or serving the Lineage in Asia and North and South America. Dr. Lye teaches in Asheville, where he is founder and spiritual director at Urban Dharma North Carolina and Drigung Dharmakirti International Sangha. Dorjé Lopön also teaches on a regular basis over the internet to groups in Malaysia, Peru, Guatemala, and Little Rock, Arkansas, USA. More information at https://udharmanc.com/
Biography of Khenpo Chöphel Rinpoche
Venerable Khenpo Chöphel Rinpoche comes from Drigung Thil Monastery, the main monastery of the Drigung Kagyu lineage in Tibet. At a young age, he was ordained as a monk by Vajradhara Pachung Rinpoche. He received many teachings and instructions, including extensive teachings on Mahamudra, from Gelong Vajradhara Pachung Rinpoche and from his successor, Gelong Vajradhara Tenzin Nyima at Drigung Thil Monastery. There, Rinpoche has been a ritual master and a chant master. He later joined the Drigung Kagyu Rinchen Ling in Nepal where he received teachings and trainings from great masters such as Nubpa Rinpoche, Drubwang Rinpoche and H.H. Drigung Kyabgon Chetsang Rinpoche. In 2007, he came to USA at the request of Khenchen Konchog Gyaltshen Rinpoche to teach at the Tibetan Meditation Center in Maryland. Biography of Our Center Founder Venerable Khenchen Konchog Gyaltshen Rinpoche
Venerable Khenchen Konchog Gyaltshen Rinpoche was born in 1946 near Mount Tsari in southwestern Tibet. In 1959 his family became refugees in India when Tibet was invaded. Rinpoche attended school in India and in 1968 took monk’s vows from Kyabje Kalu Rinpoche. Later he became one of the first to graduate from the then newly established Central Institute of Higher Tibetan Studies in Varanasi. Rinpoche received teachings from great teachers such as the 16th Karmapa and Khunu Lama Rinpoche. Rinpoche also completed a 3-year retreat at Lamayuru Monastery in Ladakh under the guidance of Vajradhara Kunga Rinpoche. In later years, Rinpoche also received teachings from the tripön of Drigung Thil Monastery, Vajradhara Pachung Rinpoche and his successor Vajradhara Gelong Tenzin Nyima Rinpoche.
In the 1980s, Rinpoche arrived in the United States and established the Tibetan Meditation Center in Frederick, Maryland, as well as other centers across the country and the world over the next twenty years, including the founding of Ratnashri Meditation Center in Sweden in 1997. During this time, he translated critical Drigung Kagyu practices, prayers and histories into English; and published numerous highly regarded books. Among them are Great Kagyu Masters, In Search of the Stainless Ambrosia, Jewel Ornament of Liberation, A Complete Guide to the Buddhist Path, Opening the Treasure of the Profound, the Wheel of Wisdom, the Four Dharmas of Gampopa. In 2001, Rinpoche was formally enthroned as the “khenchen” (“great khenpo“) of Drigung Kagyu Lineage by His Holiness Drigung Kyabgön Chetsang Rinpoche.
Everyone who has met Rinpoche can immediately recognize his utmost adherence to the pure vows of training and an unwavering compassion for all. In teaching Dharma, he always emphasizes the importance of letting Dharma penetrate our hearts rather than chasing after so-called “higher” teachings or practices or engaging in empty ritualism. Rinpoche’s teachings are thoroughly grounded in the profound teachings of Kyobpa Jigten Sumgön, founder of Drigung Kagyu. After having moved from the Tibetan Meditation Center, Rinpoche goes anywhere the Dharma is needed. Khenchen Rinpoche continues to teach at monasteries in India and Nepal, and at many centers and groups in Asia, Europe and the Americas. More information at https://ratnashri.se/
