Our neglect :

We as Muslims, have become a nation that has neglected many fields of knowledge, education, and scientific research. Instead of conducting our own effort and building upon our rich intellectual and religious heritage, we often rely entirely on ideas developed elsewhere.

Every major collection of authentic Hadith (Bukhari, Muslim, Tirmidhi, Nasai, etc.) contains chapters on medicine, foods and drinks, yet only a small number of scholars and researchers have seriously studied and presented the principles of Tibb-e-Nabawi (Prophetic Medicine) in a way that can benefit modern society.

From my understanding, the blessed barley occupies a special place in the Sunnah. It is mentioned repeatedly such as Talbinah, Barley bread, Thareed, Saweeq drink, etc. and barley bread was among the staple foods during the lifetime of Rasoolullah .

Today, however, barley bread has almost disappeared from our homes, markets, restaurants, and daily diets. Whole barley with its chaff is rarely seen. It saddens me that, because of our neglect, barley is now more commonly used in the West as an animal feed or in the production of alcoholic beverages.

I have rarely come across Muslim dietitians or nutritionists who actively promote the consumption of Barley bread. Instead, many simply adopt nutritional models developed in the West without seriously exploring the dietary guidance found in the Hadith.

Even many practicing and religious Muslims follow modern dietary trends such as the ketogenic diet. Likewise, many embrace intermittent fasting as a health practice while overlooking the unique spiritual, physical, and ethical dimensions of the monthly Islamic fasting.

Allah will hold each of us accountable for how we neglected the blessings and guidance that He entrusted to this Ummah.

I believe Muslims have a responsibility to revive research into the foods and health guidance mentioned in Tibb-e-Nabawi.
