Goond Katira (Tragacanth Gum) for Diabetes, Satiety & Constipation
Dietary fiber plays an important role in managing diabetes, and Goond Katira (Tragacanth Gum) is a traditional natural fiber widely used in Pakistan and India. In classical Arabic medical literature, it was known as صمغ الكثيراء (Samgh al-Kathiraa), from which the Urdu name Goond Katira is derived.
The renowned Muslim botanist and physician Ibn al-Baitaar quoted Masīḥ ibn al-Ḥakam, who described Tragacanth as having a cold temperament in the second degree, he further said that it helps reduce excessive moist secretions descending from the head.
When soaked in water, Goond Katira absorbs a large amount of liquid and transforms into a soft, clear gel. This gel-like consistency contributes to several health benefits, particularly in promoting fullness and supporting digestive health.
Goond Katira promotes satiety by absorbing several times its weight in water, forming a gel that expands in the stomach, slows gastric emptying & helps reduce hunger between meals.
One of the most well-recognized traditional uses of Goond Katira is relieving constipation. When consumed with plenty of water, it may soften stools, increase stool bulk & support regular bowel movements.
Goond Katira is not a treatment for diabetes, but its soluble fiber-like properties provide supportive benefits by slowing the absorption of carbohydrates, reduce post-meal blood glucose spikes & by increasing satiety, which may help with portion control and weight management.
Soak 1 tablespoon of Goond Katira in 250 ml of water and leave it for several hours, or overnight, until it forms a soft gel. Divide the prepared gel into three equal portions and consume one portion three times a day, ensuring you drink plenty of water with each serving to support hydration and digestive health.
