Eating barley bread is not obligatory or mandatory in Islam. However, it is the grain that Allah chose for His Beloved Prophet Muhammad ﷺ.
Likewise, Muslims are not sinful if they do not eat barley bread. But if Muslims neglect it to the extent that BARLEY is used only as animal feed or for making alcoholic drinks, then such neglect may itself become a serious failing of the Muslim community.
Those who bear the greatest responsibility for this "forgotten legacy" (Nasyam Mansiyya - something completely neglected and forgotten) are those who teach and study the Hadith, whom Allah has entrusted with the honor of addressing the people from the pulpit.
Had the virtues of Khubz al-Sha'eer (barley bread) been regularly promoted from the pulpit and Madaaris, millions of Muslims today might have been saved from diseases, hospital visits, and the burden of expensive medications.
