Tibb-e-Nabawi diet ~ article # 6
Allah has designed the human’s diet as a balanced combination of carbohydrates, proteins, and fats. We cannot override this divine system by restricting ourselves to only proteins or fats, by adopting a low-carb diet, or by eliminating grains altogether.
Allah Has Assigned each creature a diet suited to its nature:
• Herbivores, such as goats, cows, camels, deer ~ created to consume only grass, hay, and grains.
• Carnivores, such as lions, tigers, bears, wolves, and crocodiles ~ created to consume only meat (animal protein).
Observe the nature of Halal herbivores: their faces reflect gentleness, especially the camel has the softest face with tears in eyes, these Halal animals are generally harmless to humans, and they lack predatory or attacking instincts.
Now compare them with meat-eating predators: their facial expressions are fierce & merciless, their instinct is to attack, and they tear apart the prey.
We feel that, people who consume excessive amounts of animal proteins ~ almost daily, over time; their temperament may change, making the heart brittle, putting load on the kidneys, they become hyper & tense with anger / aggressiveness, and harmful toward others.
Even the meat of Halal animals, we have to take it in moderation. The 2nd Caliph, Hazrat Umar bin Khataab Radi Allaho Anh said:
روى الإمام مالك في "الموطأ" (2 / 935)، عَنْ يَحْيَى بْنِ سَعِيدٍ، أَنَّ عُمَرَ بْنَ الْخَطَّابِ قَالَ: ( إِيَّاكُمْ وَاللَّحْمَ، فَإِنَّ لَهُ ضَرَاوَةً كَضَرَاوَةِ الْخَمْرِ ).
Imam Malik narrated in al-Muwatta (2/935) from Yahya ibn Sa‘id that ‘Umar ibn al-Khattab Radi Allaho Anh said: "Beware of meat, for it has an addiction like the addiction of wine."
The human diet was designed to be well-balanced, incorporating a variety of foods: plants, grains, vegetables, fruits, natural sugars, honey, mutton, beef, chicken, fish, milk, butter, and ghee. For Muslims, Allah has further Guided us by clearly distinguishing between what is Halal and what is Haram.
The Prophet ﷺ said:
Narrated Abu Hurairah: “On the day of Khaybar, the Messenger of Allah ﷺ prohibited every predator possessing canines, and the Mujath-thamah, and the domestic donkey.” (Jami` at-Tirmidhi 1795)
The meaning of al-Mujath-thamah was explained by the narrator: “It is the animal that is restrained and shot with arrows.” This refers to an animal that is captured or tied up and killed in such a way, making it carrion (Maytah) and therefore Haram.
Islamic rulings for HARAM animals & birds ~ based on authentic Hadith:
• Land predators with fangs → Haram (ذِي نَابٍ مِنَ السِّبَاعِ)
• Bird predators with talons → Haram (ذِي مِخْلَبٍ مِنَ الطَّيْرِ)
As Muslims, we have been blessed with a perfectly designed Halal diet; balanced in carbohydrates, proteins, and fats. Restricting ourselves to one category of foods is neither wise nor in harmony with the divine system.
