Tibb-e-Nabawi diet ~ Article # 15 ~ ASF - The CHAFF (Husk)

Husk mentioned in Qur’an

Modern nutrition science often praises bran as an essential and healthy component of grain. However, the Qur’an draws our attention to something even more profound and beneficial ~ the husk or chaff that naturally surrounds the grain. This subtle yet meaningful indication appears in Surah Ar-Rahman, where Allah says:

وَالْحَبُّ ذُو الْعَصْفِ وَالرَّيْحَانُ

“And the grain having chaff, and fragrant flowers.”
(Surah Ar-Rahman 55:12)

The key word in this verse is ذُو (Dhu), an Arabic term meaning “possessor of” or “owner of.” In the Qur’an, this word appears in different forms such as ذو، ذا، ذي, each conveying the idea of possession and inseparable association.

For example, Allah says:

وَهُوَ الْغَفُورُ ذُو الرَّحْمَةِ

“And He is the All-Forgiving, Possessor of Mercy.”
(Surah Al-An‘aam 6:147)

Here, Allah is described as the Possessor of Mercy, indicating that mercy is inseparable from His Divine nature. Likewise, in the verse of Surah Ar-Rahman, the grain is described as the possessor of husk, implying that the husk is not a useless covering but an essential and natural part of the grain itself.

This expression carries a deep lesson. Allah could have simply mentioned grain alone, yet He specifically referred to grain together with its husk. This suggests wisdom in preserving the natural form in which Allah created food. The husk serves as protection, nourishment, and balance for the grain. Removing it completely may reduce some of the natural benefits intended within creation.

Interestingly, the grain along with its husk naturally also contains the bran ~ the nutrient-rich outer layer valued today for its fiber, minerals, and health benefits. While modern science highlights the importance of bran separately, the Qur’an goes even deeper by directly mentioning the chaff or husk itself. Within this brief yet profound expression lies a hidden wisdom: by preserving the grain in its complete natural state, the benefits of bran are also inherently preserved. Thus, the Qur’anic wording subtly encompasses layers of nutritional and biological wisdom long before modern discoveries.

The verse therefore invites mankind to reflect not only on food itself but on the perfection and completeness of Allah’s creation. What people often discard as unnecessary may, in reality, contain hidden benefit and divine wisdom. Every word in the Qur’an carries depth, guidance, and signs for those who contemplate sincerely.

Indeed, the more humanity advances in knowledge, the more the timeless wisdom of the Qur’an continues to unfold.
