In this section, we have compiled information about the herbs mentioned in Tibb-e-Nabawi and how they were subsequently utilized as traditional herbal remedies by renowned physicians of the past. The material has been translated and adapted from the works of distinguished scholars and physicians, including Ibn al-Qayyim, Ibne Sina, Imam Shams al-Din al-Dhahabi, Ibn al-Baitar, Dawud al-Antaki, and others.
During their time, Hijamah & herbal medicine were the primary methods of treatment, and physicians relied extensively on natural remedies to address a wide variety of ailments. Their writings describe numerous methods of use, including consuming herbs in powdered form, putting herbal preparations in the eyes, ears, and nose, and using them externally as poultices and other topical treatments.
However, it is important to recognize that in modern times, many people are unfamiliar with the significance of herb quality, freshness, and purity. Furthermore, treatments involving the application of herbs to sensitive areas such as the eyes, ears, or nose are generally not practiced or accepted today.
Therefore, where appropriate, we recommend eating the herbal blends primarily in powdered form, cleaning the herbs & grinding them properly; while carefully observing the dosage. The quantity should be adjusted according to individual tolerance and suitability, ensuring that the remedy is used with caution and moderation.
At the same time, it should be noted that Sa'oot (nasal administration) of Qust al-Bahri is mentioned in the Hadith.
وذكر أبو داودَ فى سننه أنَّ النبىَّ صلى الله عليه وسلم اسْتَعطَ
Abu Dawood recorded in his Sunan that Prophet Muhammad صلى الله عليه وسلم himself used Sa’oot for treatment.
For this purpose, Qust should be fresh and ground into an ultra-fine powder before use. Likewise, truffle water is mentioned as a remedy for eye ailments. Fresh truffles (heaving water) are difficult to obtain, as they typically grow after rainfall. In the Arabian Peninsula, these truffles are often brown in color and blend with the surrounding clay soil, which is likely why they are believed to be the truffles referred to in the Hadith.
