In assignment # 9 of our course on Tibb-e-Nabawi (Healing by herbs), we discussed the nature of foods & herbs; & how their potency is marked as 4 different categories, 1st, 2nd, 3rd & 4th.

The foods considered as *hot in the 4th degree* are extremely heating and can cause harm if over consumed — especially in individuals with a hot temperament. Some of them are:

Red Chili (Cayenne, Hot Pepper), very irritating to stomach and liver; can cause inflammation
Raw Garlic (in excess), Strongly heating; can lead to mouth ulcers, heat, or gas
Raw Onion, Hot & Dry, in excess, very heating and drying
Mustard (Seeds or Paste), Hot & Dry, extremely pungent; can irritate mucosa
Cinnamon (in excess), Hot & Dry, Strong uterine and metabolic stimulant
Cloves, Hot & Dry, stimulating; avoid in excessive amounts
Deep-fried Foods, Hot & Dry, increase bile; very heating and hard to digest
Old Cured/Dried Meat (e.g. jerky), Hot & Dry, intensely heating and hard on liver & stomach
Grilled Liver, Hot & Dry, dense, organ meats usually take longer time to digest
Coffee (in large quantities), Hot & Dry, stimulating; especially roasted types

When used in excess, “Hot in the 4th Degree” foods may cause headaches, ulcers, excessive thirst, nosebleeds, aggravation of liver or blood conditions, increased anger, restlessness.

Such foods should be avoided by those with hot or dry temperament. These foods should be balanced with cold, moist foods like cucumber, milk, or barley water.
