Tibb-e-Nabawi diet, article # 17 ~ Cheese

Cheese is mentioned in the Hadith. It is narrated from Abdullah ibn Umar (رضي الله عنهما) that "The Prophet was brought a piece of cheese in Tabuk. He asked for a knife, mentioned the Name of Allah, and cut it." (Sunan Abi Dawud 3819)

Imam Ibn al-Qayyim (رحمه الله) explained that fresh, unsalted (or lightly salted) cheese is beneficial for the stomach. It is easy to digest, nourishing, supports muscle growth, and gently softens the bowels. In contrast, aged and heavily salted cheese is less beneficial. He noted that it may be harder to digest, contribute to constipation, weaken the body over time, and, when consumed excessively, may contribute to kidney and bladder stone formation. He therefore regarded fresh cheese as the healthier option.

Today, most commercially available cheeses are aged to develop their characteristic flavor and are relatively high in salt. For example:

  • Feta cheese: approximately 5–6 teaspoons of salt per kilogram
  • Cheddar cheese: approximately 3–4 teaspoons of salt per kilogram
  • Many other aged cheeses also contain substantial amounts of salt.

One of the healthiest choices is fresh homemade cottage cheese. It allows you to control both the freshness and the amount of salt. For 1 kilogram of homemade cottage cheese, about 1 teaspoon of salt is generally sufficient, while still providing good flavor.

Fresh cottage cheese naturally has a soft, grainy texture, the curds don’t stick together. If you prefer a smoother consistency, blend it with a little extra virgin olive oil in a food processor until it becomes creamy and spreadable.

Most aged commercial cheeses are higher in saturated fat, while cream cheese spread is among the highest because it is made with added cream. In contrast, homemade cottage cheese is naturally much lower in saturated fat, while remaining rich in high-quality protein and calcium.

For obtaining 1 kg of Cottage Cheese, you will need from 5 to 5.5 liters of fresh milk, this makes the price of cottage cheese as SAR 30/- in Saudi Arabia  (USD 8/-)
