Star Wars: Hunters is an upcoming free-to-play player-vs-player competitive arena combat game being developed by Zynga for Nintendo Switch, iOS and Android, set to be released in 2024.[1] The game takes place after the fall of the Galactic Empire, featuring a new cast of characters including bounty hunters, rebellion heroes and imperial stormtroopers.

The title explores the period shortly after the events of Return of the Jedi, relatively close to the start of The Mandalorian in terms of the overall narrative of the Star Wars franchise. The tie-in novel Battle for the Arena has been released, which would have more closely coincided with the planned release date for the video game (had there not been delays), exploring the backstories of various playable characters. The game allows you to play a variety of bounty hunters, each with their own unique sets of abilities, as all compete to assert dominance in the arena.

For Hunters with guns, auto-fire is the default shooting mode where the Hunter starts firing when an enemy is in the crosshair. While melee hunters automatically start swinging their light sabres/weapons when they are near an enemy. In a game where there are so many active skills to keep an eye out for. The reasoning behind the auto attack mechanic is sound.

Each Hunter can be levelled up individually (Hunter Fame), and levelling up hunters provides Crystals, Coins and Cores. Cores can also be additionally purchased with soft currency. As of now, each core can only be purchased once with no option to upgrade to increase the effect.

At the start of a match. Players select their roles and hunters in a random order. Based on the number of hunters a player might have. The composition can be mixed with pure DPS, Support or Tank teams.

The game features character customization, allowing players to equip their hunters with different costumes and other cosmetics. These can be both in-game and real-world purchases, via the in-game premium currency: Crystals. It also features a progression system, first with Hunter Fame, each match giving a certain amount of Fame, with the character ultimately gaining new Hunter Levels, and second with player progression, both unlocking various rewards, such as credits, Crystals, cosmetics and modules.[7] The game will support cross-play across all platforms.[8]

The game was first mentioned on August 18, 2018, when Zynga and Disney reached a deal regarding the development of a new Star Wars mobile game, with NaturalMotion starting development soon after,[9] with the help of their subsidiaries BossAlien.[10] On November 16, 2020, Zynga announced the creation of a new dedicated game studio in Austin, Texas, USA.[1] The game was mentioned again on February 10, 2021, in Zynga's Q4 2020 earning reports,[11] before being properly announced several days later on February 17, 2021, conjointly during a Nintendo Direct livestream,[12] and on StarWars.com.[2]

The upcoming competitive arena combat game, Star Wars: Hunters, takes place in a familiar period of the much-loved galaxy far, far away. Hunters sees players compete as a team of diverse, fun characters to control, escort, and win arena-based modes, and features both new and returning figures from the Star Wars galaxy. Players can take control of bounty hunters, Sith warriors and even veterans of the Galactic Civil War.

Star Wars: Hunters is set sometime between Episodes VI and VII of the Star Wars franchise. Return of the Jedi concludes with a victorious party following the destruction of the second Death Star at the Battle of Endor, and is set four years after the Battle of Yavin. As The Force Awakens occurs in 34 ABY, and the Empire didn't collapse until 5 ABY, it can be deduced that Star Wars: Hunters takes place at some point between 5-34 ABY. Many important events occurred in between Return of the Jedi and the beginning of Rey's journey in The Force Awakens. The Empire's collapse and the founding of the New Republic under the first Chief of State, Mon Mothma, kickstarted this era, but it wasn't the end of the war completely. While the Empire ceased to exist following the Battle of Jakku (as depicted in Star Wars Battlefront's sequel), in the years to come, several battles and crises alerted Leia Organa Solo to the First Order, which led to her creating the Resistance.

The premise behind Star Wars: Hunters revolves around an intergalactic tournament in the place called The Arena, located in the lawless Outer Rim. You play as one of the Hunters, whose ranks vary from bounty hunters similar to Boba Fett to heroes of the Resistance. Each of them is equipped with unique skill sets that reflect their story and nature as referenced in other Star Wars materials.

Announced in February 2021, Star Wars: Hunters is in the works at NaturalMotion Games, a UK development studio owned by Zynga, which was acquired by Rockstar parent company Take-Two earlier this year.

One thing to note is that auto-attack is also on as a default when booting up the game, which should be turned off the minute the player starts playing. As at the time of writing, the Nintendo Switch version of Star Wars: Hunters is not out yet, so hopefully the console release will be an improvement.

Previews: Teaser; Welcome to the ArenaTropes in this video game include:

  • Become a Real Boy: Subverted with J-3D1. He isn't just a droid who wants to be a Jedi. He has been programmed to believe that the Force is with him, despite there having been no instances of Force-sensitive droids in Canon.
  • Bounty Hunter: Natch. Aran Tal and Imara Vex are bounty hunters out of the playable cast.
  • Call-Forward: In preview footage, you can see the back of Rieve's head, which has the Sith Eternal symbol tattooed into it.
  • Continuity Nod:
  • On the official website, Rieve's character reveal image has her name written in the same font as The Acolyte.
  • One of J-3DI1's customizable paint jobs is based on the Jedi Temple Guard look.
  • Sentinel's stormtrooper armor is weathered and rundown, much like the Imperial Remnants in The Mandalorian
  • Grievous Harm with a Body: The Wookiee warrior Grozz wields the disembodied arms of Imperial droids like clubs.
  • Hero Shooter: Each character is going to have different abilities, weapons and playstyles, like the heroes of Star Wars Battlefront II (2017)
  • Mini-Mecha: Slingshot, an adrenaline-junkie Ugnaught mechanic, has repurposed a Droideka to be a manually-piloted combat mech for his use.
  • Totem Pole Trench: The Jawa characters Utooni are this, being two Jawas in a trench coat. Being one single playable character, this also makes them The Dividual.
  • Mythology Gag: Aran Tal's color scheme is based on how Boba Fett looked in The Star Wars Holiday Special.
  • The Remnant: Sentinel still wears the Imperial colors, even going so far as to brand the Empire's symbol on his helmet, even after the supposed death of the Emperor and the Empire's decline.

On the planet Vespaara lies the Arena--a series of battlefields where fighters known as Hunters face off in teams to compete in front of roaring crowds. Newest to their ranks is Rieve, a Force-sensitive orphan from Corellia with abilities she can barely control, and a past she desperately wants to leave behind. But Rieve gets off to a rocky start, strugging with her lack of confidence both inside the Arena and with her fellow Hunters. And when a mysterious stranger begins stalking the Arena, Rieve fears her troubled past has finally caught up with her....
