One of the best aspects of closing is that you typically start your shift in the evening. This allows you to have half a day off (depending on your situation). You can focus on a hobby or a project, get a second job, or just take time for yourself by visiting friends, sleeping in or chilling out before work.
The Closing Shift (閉店事件) is a Japanese first-person horror game created and published by Chilla's Art. It was published on March 18, 2022 and is available on Steam.
You play as an unnamed young woman working the night shift at Chilla's Coffee. Lately, you get the feeling that someone's been watching you. Are you being stalked? The Closing Shift provides examples of:
- Always Night: Like in The Convenience Store before it, justified, as the protagonist has the closing shift in the evening.
- The Bad Guy Wins: The Stalker gets away with terrorizing a young woman and killing Hasaku. And in the end, he might even succeed in killing or kidnapping the protagonist.
- Creator Cameo: Chilla's Art have their logo all over this game, from the chinchilla plushies lying around everywhere to the very cafe the protagonist works at.
- Downer Ending: After seemingly killing the stalker, the protagonist goes to the police for help. However, the police can't find either the stalker's or the private investigator's body and tells her to just forget the whole thing and leave the rest to them. The protagonist resolves to do just that, but that night in her apartment, she hears her phone ring from the outside and goes out to retrieve it. When she returns to her apartment, the stalker is revealed to have been hiding in her closet and attacks her. It is not shown what happens after.
- Expy: Chilla's Coffee's logo and color scheme make it a very obvious one of Starbuck's.
- Featureless Protagonist: We know next to nothing about the Player Character aside from that she's a woman and that she works the closing shift at Chilla's Coffee. We get brief glimpses of her appearance, but not much on her face.
- Foreshadowing:
- A lot of the guests talk about the recent rise in stalking and assault incidents. The protagonist is being stalked throughout the game and the ending has her attacked by the stalker, just as she thinks she's safe.
- Hasaku tells the protagonist that going to the police will most likely not help, as without concrete evidence they won't be willing to do anything and will just brush her off. When the police can't find either the investigator's or the stalker's body in the ending, they just assume the protagonist imagined everything and send her home without so much as a further questioning.
- A couple of schoolgirls in the cafe talk about a strange man who kept watching them on the bus and how they're not sure what to do. When the protagonist is forced to take the bus on December 15th, one of the other passengers stares at her and doesn't stop, even when she gets off.
- Hidden Depths: The protagonist can show a surprising knowledge of the Japanese legal system during the Mametarou event, even citing the exact penal code he's violating and how.
- Jerkass:
- Funahashi-Senpai, who chews the protagonist out every time she's late and mocks her when she tells him about her stalker.
- The lady with the stroller who almost bumps into the protagonist, but instead of apologizing just snaps at her and complains about the lacking manners of today's youth. She's also taking her baby out for a walk, while said baby is naked. In winter. The next time you meet her she's quiet, crying. While pushing an empty stroller.
- Jerkass Has a Point: While Funahashi is being extremely rude about it, he's kind of right to be annoyed that the protagonist is constantly late, especially considering that she's been messing up orders. From his point of view, the protagonist must appear like a slacker.
- Jumpscare:
- On day 3, the protagonist gets startled by a lady with a stroller when leaving the apartment building. Her appearance is very sudden, not helped by the overall look of the models.
- When the protagonist is closing the coffee shop, the stalker appears out of nowhere and stands by the front door.
- No Name Given: The protagonist's and the stalker's names are never given.
- Pet the Dog:
- Funahashi-Senpai reminds the protagonist that all the recipes are written on the whiteboard and advises her to read through them if she's having trouble with the orders.
- Yoko gives the protagonist a rosary bracelet to "ward off evil" and genuinely thanks her for serving her favorite beverage and pastry.
- Police Are Useless: Discussed. Hasaku advises the protagonist to come to him if she sees anything or anyone suspicious, as the police will most likely just brush it off and not do anything to help. Later on invoked, as the police not only cannot find Hasaku's body, but also lets the stalker get away, who proceeds to ambush the protagonist at her apartment.
- Red Herring: Shoya behaves like a sleazy creep toward the protagonist, even pressuring her into giving him her number. This might lead the player to believe that he might be the stalker. He isn't.
- Sanity Slippage: The protagonist's mental health rapidly deteriorates over the course of the game, due to the stress of being stalked and harassed and nobody believing her. It gets to the point where she has horrifying nightmares about her workplace, as she has started to associate it with the stalker.
- Simulation Game: The game is basically a barista simulator with horror elements.
- Stalker with a Crush: The Stalker has deluded himself into believing the protagonist is in love with him and spends seemingly all his free time writing creepy notes about her and taking pictures of her at work. He's also been camping out in the cafe's back room to be even closer to her.
- Stealth Insult: One customer is worried about the recent rise of stalking incidents as she's apparently good-looking and has a lot of admirers. She then goes on to say that the protagonist doesn't need to worry as much as she does, but tells her to take care nonetheless.
- Switching P.O.V.: At several points in the game the camera switches to the perspective of the stalker.
- Uncertain Doom: Two of the endings have the stalker ambush the protagonist in either her car or her apartment. What happened is unknown as the game ends when he emerges from the back seat or the closet.
- What Happened to the Mouse?: Just about every night the protagonist goes to work, she relieves Funahashi before starting her shift. The last night of the game, however, doesn't have Funahashi for some reason. It's never stated if he left, changed his hours, or might have been killed by the stalker.
- Workplace Horror: A solid example of showing how going to work doesn't make you safe against a stalker.
