As well as Ray Vaugn, Doechii and Zacari's EP's, and possibly the black panther album too. I know, I know, it's a HOT take but Goddamn it I've listened to all of these projects and I do believe it. Kendrick is my favorite rapper and has been for like 10 years, and I even have to admit this.

The grand and emotional instrumental that comes in after the Joe Budden interpolation just exudes perseverance along with the lyrics that Ab was spittin. The instrumental on 'No Report Card' was smooth as hell and didn't attempt to do too much with its psychedelic trap beat. The soulful beat switch on Hollandaise was fucking vintage with its blaring horns! FOMF and Gang 'nem featured Ab embracing his Del Amo roots and making music you can actually bump in the whip or blast at a function.

Finally the 3 highlights. Bucket.... nigga.... BUCKET! That progression in the beat is so fucking genius. The way it's timid, then raises... then raises... then flattens. It makes you feel like you're in a movie watching someone find some crazy shit. GOODMAN... The shit that the beat does when Ab-Soul says "They wanna chop it up with soul like the old Kanye!" made me actually yell out "AYO WHO THE FUCK IS PRODUCING THIS SHIT NIGGA!?! ???". That's that College Trilogy, Common - Be level shit. Then to top it all off he ends it all by destroying a DJ Premier beat that reminds me of the intrumentals all over the album in my Profile Pic, one of my favorites of all time, Moment of Truth by Gang Starr.

Ab-Soul has revealed the cover art and tracklist for his forthcoming fifth studio album, Herbert. The record will arrive via Top Dawg Entertainment next Friday (December 16), six years and one week after the release of his most recent LP, Do What Thou Wilt.

Released: November 18, 2022Herbert is the fifth studio album by American rapper Ab-Soul. It was released on December 16, 2022 by Top Dawg Entertainment. Titled after the rapper's birth name, Herbert Anthony Stevens IV, the album marks his return to music after a six-year absence following Do What Thou Wilt. in December 2016. The cover artwork depicts a young Herbert, "representative of music's centrality in his life."[1] It contains guest features from Lance Skiiiwalker, Joey Bada$$, Punch, Zacari, Fre$h, Jhené Aiko, Ambré, Russ, Big Sean, Alemeda, and Sir.

But the centrepieces of the album are "Do Better" and the title track, "Herbert." On the former, Soul grapples with depression and substance abuse while motivating himself to strive for his personal best. (The music video bravely recreates the conditions of his suicide attempt, while a separate lyrics video shows comments from fans sharing how the song impacted them.) "Herbert," meanwhile, details the relentless string of struggles that he's fought all his life: being diagnosed at 10 years old with the rare disease Stevens-Johnson syndrome, which impacts his skin and his vision; losing his father to gun violence and his former partner Alori Joh to suicide; and more.

But what's notably missing from Herbert is those conspiracy theories that electrified older albums like Control System; he'd rather mine his own life experiences for deeper meaning instead of digging through the annals of YouTube and message boards. "You can't fuck with Herbert. Ab-Soul can't even fuck with Herbert," one of his longtime friends, King Richard, says at the end of "No Report Card." The Black Lip Bastard has set high standards, but his homie may have a point.

Under the Radar's Chris Thiessen critiqued, "He references conversations with Jay-Z and interpolates Grandmaster Flash, Nas, and Kendrick Lamar. He's studied each of them closely, and though he's about 15 years into his career, it still feels like Ab-Soul is chasing them, hoping that the flattery of imitation will gain him favor with hip-hop heads and classic MCs. [...] the album's greatest flaws are the ones where Soul seems to lose a piece of himself by playing for laughs or streams or old school clout."[14] The Needle Drop assessed, "An improvement over the previous two, but Soulo is almost certainly capable of more consistent full-lengths."[15] Sputnik Music expressed in favor, "The record as a whole feels much more lived-in and energetic; there's an urgency to the emcee's anecdotes and reflections, all of which are propelled by varied inflections and a tangible grit to match the lyrical content."[16] RapReviews.com said it "comes off as sincere, purposeful and uncovered."[17]

Ab-Soul is back and brighter than ever. On Friday (December 16), the Carson, California native released his fifth LP, Herbert, which features singles "Do Better," "Gang'Nem" along with the previously-released "Hollandaise" and "Moonshooter." Appearing on the album are longtime collaborators Jhené Aiko, Lance Skiiiwalker and SiR along with Ambré, Fre$h, Big Sean, Russ, ALEMEDA and Top Dawg Entertainment president Punch. and others. On production are DJ Premier, Sounwave, James Blake, Hit-Boy, Boi-1da, DJ Dahi and more.

Not long after the release of Herbert, Ab-Soul confirmed in and interview with Charlamange that after completing the majority of the album he tried to commit suicide by jumping off of an overpass close to his mothers house. He largely blames substance abuse and the loss of his best friend for the attempt, though suicide has haunted Ab-Soul over the last 10 years with both his ex girlfriend Alori Joh as well as previous collaborator Mac Miller both taking their lives. Digesting this and the time of when many of the songs were recorded brings an immediacy to many of the tracks and exposes layers in the lyrics that I missed on the first few listens.

It's been a few years since Ab-Soul blessed fans with an album but in under two weeks, we'll receive his forthcoming album, Herbert. In the past few months, Soul's unveiled a few singles, and recently confirmed a Dec. 16th release date.

December's shaping up to be a busy month for Top Dawg Entertainment as they close out the year. Before we get the new album from Ab-Soul, SZA will be releasing her long-awaited album, S.O.S. The TDE songstress appeared on Saturday Night Live over the weekend where she confirmed her new album would arrive in its entirety on December 9th.

Ab-Soul is gearing up to release his fifth studio album. After debuting his new song "Gang'nem" a couple of weeks ago, the TDE rapper continues to reveal more details about his new LP.

On Wednesday, December 7, Ab-Soul revealed the official album cover for Herbert along with its 18-song tracklist. Soulo's first studio album in six years will come complete with fresh collaborations Big Sean, Jhene Aiko, Joey Bada$$, SiR, Punch and more. The project will also contain collaborations with previously released singles like "Hollandaise," "Moonshooter" and "Do Better" featuring Zacari. In a Instagram post, he shared a teaser for a new music video in support of the album.

He took to his Twitter account on Friday (December 30) to share his thoughts on his own fifth studio album. "ALSO. My album IS top 5 of da year. F*cc all dat humble sh*t. Dead homies," he writes in his remark. Evidently, being humble isn't in the "Illuminate" rapper's New Year's resolutions. However, the argument is definitely a fair one, as the album has garnered a positive reception.

The project serves as the TDE rapper's first album in six years, following 2016's Do What Thou Wilt. Throughout HERBERT's 18-song tracklist, the 35-year-old explicitly addresses the state of his mental health and his battles with depression.

As part of the rollout for the album, Ab-Soul sat down with Charlamagne Tha God for an intimate interview. During the pair's talk, which lasted for over an hour, Soulo opens up about a suicide attempt.

"I pretty much finished the album before I did what I did. I jumped off a freeway overpass, man. It was about 50 feet. I think a car broke my fall. [I] walked from my mom's house to the bridge and jumped off on the freeway overpass. Imagine, like, you're walking and you blink and then you're further. You blink and then you're further, you blink and then I'm on a fence," he details.
