Homestay is an exciting and unique way to learn about American culture and improve English language skills. It is much more than just renting a room or having a landlord. As a TCC Homestay student, you will live with one of our local host families who will help you adjust to living in the U.S. They will include you in their family life and provide support that will help you succeed in your studies. All TCC hosts are screened by TCC and receive an orientation and ongoing support from our International Programs Office.

TCC has hosts from many different backgrounds. Some have children at home, others do not. Some host more than one international student. We have single host parents as well as couples. TCC hosts represent a wide variety of race, ethnicity, religious practice, age, and even national origin. Some have been in the U.S. for generations while others are immigrants who were international students themselves.Every host is different so each homestay is a different experience. We look at your interests and requests and the interests and requests of host families to make the best match possible.

Homestay placements are quarterly commitments (3 months). At the end of each quarter, you have the option of staying with your host, changing to a new host, or moving out of homestay entirely. Many students will live with the same family for their entire time at TCC and form lifelong connections.

TCC Homestay program was on pause during COVID and begam reopening for the 2021-22 school year. Homestay space is still very limited as we resume operations so it is important for students to plan ahead. We are unlikely to be able to accommodate students who apply late and/or delay in submitting their visa

To keep up with rising food, utility, and other costs, TCC recently raisedthe monthly homestay rates and the one-time placement fee. This is the first rate increase in many years. In addition to these increases, we will offer a shared room option where 2 students would live in the same room, similar to a college residence hall. Each student sill still have their own bed, desk, storage, etc. Only hosts with large bedrooms will be able to offer the shared option, so space may be limited. Students who request shared homestay are not guaranteed a shared room. If no shared space is available, you will be offered a private room at the normal private rate.

Applying early DOES give you priority in the matching process, but we do not make host family assingments until after you confirm your visa. Students who already have an approved visa may have priority over students who applied earlier, but do not have a visa yet. All students will receive their family's profile approximately 2 weeks prior to arrival.

There are many options available for students who are arriving on a different day or plan to arrange their own transportation. The best options for transportation from the airport are generally ride share such as uber or lyft; although, there are many taxi services as well. Depending on where you are staying, there may be a shuttle available. The website for the SeaTac airport has some good information and links to different options:

It is important to remember that TCC International Programs is not an agent or property manager. We do not place students into local apartments, homes or condominiums. We cannot act on your behalf. We are happy to provide resources and answer questions, but students need to contact local landlords directly. Other considerations:

Below are some of apartments within walking distance of TCC where international students have lived in the past without needing a co-signer. The COVID pandemic changed many things, and especially the rental housing market. Policies at these apartments may not be the same as before. TCC does not endorse any of these properties or guarantee that your application will be accepted.

There are large number of search tools for housing. Some properties will advertise on all of them, while others may only use one or two. Most of the listings you find here are from property management companies or professionally managed apartments. Almost all of these apartments and houses will be un-furnished but some of the search tools will allow you to filter furnished options

Craigslist is a community search site. You will find many listings here that do not appear on other sites. This includes private owners who may have a 2nd home to rent or even just a spare room in their home. This can be a great resource to find less expensive options and, In many cases, single rooms may already be furnished as well. It is very important to use some caution on this site though. Some postings may be scams attempting to steal money, information, or even lure people in person.

In addition to traditional apartments, vacation rentals and sites that cater to traveling workers are also great places for students to look. These rentals are all fully furnished and offer shorter rental periods which is good for students who cannot commit to long lease contracts. They are a little more expensive, but many do offer discounts for long stays and they are usually much better options than a hotel.

Tacoma is a college town with multiple schools (not just TCC) so there are often other college and university students in the same situation, but also many who are not students. It can be hard to find them though. Some sites are just based on the city while others are more specific to each school.

This is specifically for students seeking college roommates. It is sorted by school so if you do sign up with TCC as your school, you should also search under University of Washington, Tacoma, University of Puget Sound, and Bates Technical College. Pierce College and Clover Park Technical College are also close by in Lakewood.

TCC and many other local schools and community service providers also partner with Associated Ministries in an adult homeshare program. This is like homestay, but is a community service for all adults in the area having trouble finding their own housing. Unlike social roommate sites, both home seekers and home providers must be screened and pass certain evaluations.

In this family travel guide, I will take you through the essential steps to ensure a smooth and enjoyable family vacation wherever you choose to visit in Europe. And in reality, most of these tips can also be used for other destinations. But a trip to Europe is a good jumping-off point for big, international travel!

Many European countries require your passport to have 3 or 6 months of validity left on it. The general rule of thumb is that your passport expiration date must be at LEAST 6 months after your departure date.

Also, many premium credit cards, such as the American Express Platinum Card or Chase Sapphire Cards, include trip protection when you use them. Read the terms in your account, but often, this can cover everything from delays to lost baggage.

Dreaming up trips to Europe is my specialty! I have to confess that I do it weekly, if not daily. Many of them never come to fruition, but when they do, I never have a single regret. Take the trip. Life is short!

First, know what main airlines (domestic and international) service your nearby airports and the routes. For example, Delta reigns supreme in Atlanta along with SkyTeam partners like Air France and KLM. Therefore, there are the most nonstops each day, heading to Paris and Amsterdam for me.

I am obsessed with Thrifty Traveler Premium. I have had their annual subscriptions for a few years and have found so many deals! Because I subscribe to all cities, I get emails almost daily with incredible domestic and international flight deals.

I have one last flight tip before we move on to cities. Generally, a round-trip ticket will be cheaper than two one-way tickets when paying cash/credit (as opposed to points/miles). On your first short European trip, you should resist the urge to do a multi-city trip where you start and end in different places.

Adding onto that, you will also want to compare prices on partner airlines. For example, using the Sky Team alliance that I mentioned above. You may find the exact flight (same plane and everything) sold from Delta for one price. If you check Air France, KLM, or Virgin Atlantic, you may find a cheaper flight as they codeshare these routes!

For your first trip to Europe, I recommend focusing on one city. Our favorite thing to do is watch YouTube videos about that city. Sometimes I do this before I book my flights, sometimes after. But it is a great way to learn more about a city and get excited about your trip!

I browse though the TripAdvisor page for that city. I scroll through photos, read user comments, and see the available tours and activities. When you have found the right trip, you know. You feel the urge to lock it in!

Europe is very crowded in summer, but there are some sweet spots. For the past two years, we have headed to Europe immediately after school gets out on the weekend of Memorial Day. Most European schools go into late June, so this is a little sweet spot. Also, Fall and Spring breaks can be excellent shoulder seasons. Winter travel to Europe can be magical with all of the Christmas markets. You have to be mindful of what type of trip you are planning.

Here lies one topic that comes as a surprise to many first-time European travelers. In the United States and North America, double Queen hotel rooms that accommodate four are a dime a dozen and often have sleeper sofas, too. However, in Europe, most hotel rooms only sleep two guests. And these occupancy rules are very strict!

However, splitting a stay between two areas in a large city or even between two nearby towns such as Bruges and Brussels is often a good idea. In fact, we almost always do this when our trip is 6+ days.

Regardless of which site you use, you need to make sure you understand the city you are visiting. Walkability is the #1 most important factor for our family when traveling. So, we always ensure we are in the most ideal location.
