Why is it that the Plex windows app deals so much better at playing direct play vs the browser, when my users are accessing films, they go to the plex.tv app through their browser and certain films they can't direct stream either video or audio but can through the windows app.
Why is this? Is it to do with codecs? I wanted to do some reading and understand this topic more.
Thanks in advance
I'm running a relatively beefy system (10900K @ 5.2Ghz, 2080Ti, 64GB RAM, and all SSDs). Playing a video is fine. Playing games are fine. The problem I am having with Plex isn't with its playability or anything like that (HW acceleration is enabled and whatnot); however, the UI seems laggy. Even moving the mouse cursor over the active plex window causes the mouse to flicker, but as soon as it's outside the Plex border it's normal again.
Has anyone else had ongoing issues with the Plex for windows desktop app (not the Plex HTPC app), when it comes to app performance? Some examples of what I'm talking about is weird refresh rate issues when the app is in focus.
The app is still usable, but with my hardware, there is no reason for this to be happening. Also, this does not happen at all when using plex in the browser, only with the Windows Desktop App. Does anyone else have these kind of issues with the app?
Notes about hardware, I am running the plex server on a different computer, Ubuntu 20 server, while my computer is Windows 10, 12th Gen Intel(R) Core(TM) i5-12600KF 3.70 GHz, 32 GB RAM, NVIDIA 3080 TI GPU. I have been having this issue for years now, even after recently upgrading hardware, and wiping Windows.
I've recently been using the new Firefox picture in picture feature to watch videos while in other tabs or when working in other windows. I'd love to have this same functionality with Plex in the desktop app, even as a Plex Pass feature.
Hey so simple question hopefully: I have an HTPC setup that, for some reason, the Plex Media Player client decided to randomly self-destruct. Server, hosted on a docker on a NAS elsewhere, is fine. This HTPC is a Win7 PC that literally is meant for only this. I want to simply install the latest win7 version of the plex media player but the current download on the main website is only for win10 and up. I have not found an archive section. Is there an official archive section for plex's old clients that I may use? or, alternatively, any 3rd party hosting that you obviously well intentioned altruistic fellow redditors can point me to that doesn't virus the sht out of my pc?
Yeah SVP for "Plex for windows" seems broken on my end as well, if SVP is open when I open plex and play a movie/tv show it will hang for a second after opening the media and crash, and will continue to crash so long as SVP is open/enabled
I thought I saw a note about needing to use the Plex Media Player for this to work, that web browsers won't work. The plex download page felt confusing to me, but I assume the Plex for Windows is the server part. But maybe you're trying to have the server do the work for any and all players? Which would be nice.
edit 2: got Plex for windows to work, some very old legacy versions of vapoursynth and other libraries that I'm pretty sure where conflicting with newer versions that had remained installed and windows did not properly remove.
The removal of saturation works (ie. plex is reading the configuration file) but it won't interpolate. When I open a video file locally with mpv I get interpolation as expected. I don't know what I could be doing wrong.
+1 here
I've been using SVP for over a year now... and i had to replace the plex mvp-1.dll each time the client updates (i think)
but now this seems to have change probably on plex side. so my guess is the instalation instructions need to be updated?
maybe plex is using the dll from some other folder?
-- update --
so i used process explorer to check what would be using mpv-1.dll and i can confirm plex.exe is still using the mpv-1.dll at
"c:\Program Files\Plex\Plex\mpv-1.dll"
by deleting this file is starts using the mpv-1.dll from SVP 4 folder as stated above.... but still nothing has changed at plex
I'm using plex for windows not plex media player, and I've follow the instructions more times than i can remember, so this is something new.
I will check the logs when i have the time (currently i've been really busy, so it may take a while) and see if i can find something else
If you go into Plex settings, go to Libaries and Edit your Music Library > on the windows that opens go to the Advanced option and look for the following setting, its the 5th line down in the Advanced settings:
It definitely is a thing, the button is there for me both in Brave and Chrome, but in Chrome it finds the compatible devices and in Brave it does not. (I even used it from Chrome and worked fine) (Sry for my plex not being English, i hope you see what i mean in the picture like this too)

Without doubt, Plex is one of the best media applications you can and should install if you are serious in building an organized disc-less home theater system. It works by creating an digital media ecosystem of server where all your movies are indexed and cataloged, and player(s) to connect to the server and stream the movies. I can create a long blog post just to share all the great things that I love from Plex, but I will save both my time and yours to go straight to their website to know more about it and download the apps.
For years, my Mac minis had been the primary device for both Plex Media Server and Plex Home Theater (the player). Started with the old 2010 Mac mini with 2.4GHz Core2Duo processor which served me well for over 3 years. Then as Plex functionality grew, C2D processor no longer held up to directly convert my movie files and stream it to mobile devices. I then upgraded it to Mac mini 2012 with 2.3GHz Quad Core i7 processor, which has been able to handle multiple devices without breaking a sweat.
I decided to order Z64A because I wanted to try Plex for Android first. I had only known Plex on Mac OS X and iOS environments, but both Android and Windows versions were new territories for me. I was not sure if there would be limitations as Plex player compared to my Mac mini.
Installation was very straightforward: just plug it to a power source and TV, some initial setup then I was ready to go. As a standalone media player, the Z64A came with Kodi which is another excellent multi-platform media manager and player so you could easily use it independently. However my quest was to make it work with my Plex Media Server and I did not want to bother migrating years of media collection to a different system, so the next step for me was to install Plex for Android from the Google App Store.
Getting into the third month with the Z64W + PHT setup, I am very happy with it. It is a solid replacement for the player. Compared to $500 Mac mini, it is a huge money saver with only 1/3 of the price plus it uses less energy. The concept of releasing a product that allow customers to select between Android and Windows is very interesting. I hope MINIX will continue the development of this product line and improving a few shortcomings mentioned above.
Sorry but I'm not familiar with the new plex player? Or I've just gotten used to it and forgotten a change. I'm using an Xbox One and I know I'm not exaggerating when I say this has been going on for at LEAST a year. Xbox One app version is 2.55.0.70. Maybe I need to try to find another client device to use to test for a while.
I have a plex/storage server using a windows file share, the server is running a as stripped version of windows I could get from a fresh install (windows 10 debloater and as much stuff disabled as I could get) Yes, I know, windows, it sucks blah blah, but after i had issues with samba on lubuntu, its much easier.
Plex can direct stream media if the network connection is fast enough and the player support the file format. You'd have to check Task Manager to see what's happening. If its direct streaming it, you'll see little to no usage.
Place your plex server in your startup folder and restart the computer. For some reason when my expressvpn loads up it allows it to run but for some reason if I close my plex and restart the expressvpn forgets about that it alloud it to happen.
I Agree the experience is much snappier on Apple TV vs Original Fire TV 4k. One nice thing about Apple TV is that you can have the Apple TV (at least the one I have) learn any infrared remote buttons. I re-purposed my old DVD player remote to replace the Apple TV remote (gag). Using finger motions for buttons is insanity; it misreads my gestures 25% of the time.
Just to add to the original use case - I time shift college and NFL games. I did so on WMC for years, recently siwtched to Channels DVR 3 weeks ago. DVR on windows 10 (acting as a server) and apple tv 4k for front end.
thats not an apple tv limitation, thats a plex limitation. their plex app wont do it on the apple tv and they wont change it. Infuse on the apple tv will dot passthrough connected to your plex server.
Streaming your own media using Plex is free on most devices. The Plex Media Server component is free, as well as the Plex player for Windows, macOS and streaming boxes. Media playback on iOS and Android devices requires an in-app purchase to remove limitations, and Plex also offers a subscription that adds more features like Live TV and DVR recording.
In addition to running the Plex web app in a browser, desktop computer users can also run dedicated player apps. This is aimed at users wanting to use Plex in their HTPCs or to have a "home theater" type experience. It provides advanced audio and video playback capabilities to give you the best experience possible.
The new Plex app "has all the glorious player capability of Plex Media Player, plus an exciting new offline capability," according to the Plex team. What was previously called "Sync" is now just known as "Downloads," a way to download your media to your device to take with you on the go.
