with the MSP430

That's what I have so far.

Sidenote: to the admin of this group, could you possibly make pages
creatable/editable by members? I wanted to post this as a page, but
couldn't due to the restriction.

Enjoy!

Hey! Great list, thanks for adding my blog to it! (http://
msp430launchpad.blogspot.com)

I have already posted a few getting started guides for people who are
new to the MSP430. In the future I will also be posting more advanced
topics and some code from my own personal project (an EEG), in
addition to providing beginner material.

I actually didn't know about http://www.43oh.com/ until I saw your
post. Again, great list.

The next one will be using an FTDI device for USB communication, after
that there's a few different tracks I can take. Soon I will also be
making generic libraries everyone can download from the topics
presented in the blogs. I've found things like that useful to me in
the past.

Does anyone have any suggestions on future topics?

So far the one thing TI has not done a great job of is making the
documentation very consumable for the beginner. If launchpad is to
get traction in the hobby area against the other hobby platforms like
arduino or stamps, getting started needs to be a whole lot easier for
folks who don't have the background.

Topic suggestions:

Examples of things you can directly interface to the 430 pins (some of
us are more CS than EE)

Simple examples of of various ways the physically configure the
launchpad board (run off battery or other power sources, what some of
the other extra headers/jumpers are actually useful for)

Plain english run-throughs of any of the stuff TI has documented over
the head of the beginner (like how to effectively/correctly use the
low power modes in real situations)

If you are looking for a concrete project suggestion then, assuming
that there is some MMC/SD example that fit the launchpad, maybe a
battery powered temp logger that writes to SD with some focus on
prolonging the battery life?

I haven't had a lot of time to play with the launchpad since it
finally arrived, but your articles have been very helpful so far.
Thanks!

TI documentation is as good as Microchip's or Atmel's documentation.
Stamps and arduinos are made by third parties for the hobbyist market.
Lauchpad is more comparable to Atmell Dragon or Microhip Pickit.

I bet you will find nood friendly projects as the MSP430 gets more
popular among hobbyists.

Just wanted to comment on the diylife Record audio with the MSP430
microcontroller blog post. To anyone out there following that project,
be careful about building the op-amp circuit, the author didn't
mention that there is a low pass filter inside which acts as an anti-
aliasing filter. For anyone who doesnt know what that anti-aliasing
means, since the ADC on the MSP430 is pretty slow, the filter will
cause the device to not distort any inputs and have problems with
sampling quality.

Also, I agree with the whole documentation thing. I know MSP430's
fairly well, yet I still struggle with their documentation sometimes.
It took me quite some time to figure out the Vref problem with the
F2013 (which the author of diylife also discusses in his post), I
think that problem is caused by poor documentation. But as plazma
said, there are other resources that make things easier not written by
TI. My blog doesnt really run you through a project (yet), but it
discusses how to use all the little parts, which allow you to make
your own project. I like to think I do a better job at wording things
than TI, lol, but we shall see.

As for the headers, I discuss them a bit in one of my early blogs
where I go over the LaunchPad schematic.

One problem that I am having, and I'm sure this is one thing that
causes a riff between advanced and beginner guides, is that the people
who have the know-how to write the guides for beginners, have no idea
what people want to learn about after the true basics. If anyone can
post what they are struggling with, and what they dont understand, I
know there are a lot of people who would start writing a beginner
article on that topic right away.

Best of luck guys! Sorry for the long post.

I don't think the documentations is bad in most cases, I just think it
is over the heads of a fair number of people and I see some potential
for folks to use the launchpad rather like a arduino coding something
for it and using it as a unit rather than designing a whole separate
circuit to host the msp430 and treating the launchpad as a programmer
and the documentation I have seen so far covers possibilities across
many different msp devices which just adds to the confusion.

for example: I am better at the code side if this than the circuit
design and even some of the stuff about the low power states seems a
little incomplete, some docs mention 4 power states some 5 and I have
not found anything that explicitly answers the question of if you need
to re-issue the low power command at the end of your interrupt handle
code. the examples lead me to believe that is not required, but
something that plainly said "that is not required" would be nice.

one of the big strengths of arduino is that it makes most of these
things fairly clear

questions I have run into so far if anybody knows the answer offhand:
-the low power state item I mentioned above
-what is the point of the second GND pin on J6
-how much do those tiny leds on the board draw?

I have seen a couple of nice demo videos of the msp430 device running
on nearly no power (including plants) and wondered what the minimum to
say, blink the leds on the board would be and couldn't find something
that gave me a very clear picture in the time I had available to look.

NJC, maybe that would be a decent idea for a noob project. program a
low power blink then run the board off something interesting instead
of the usb. a slightly less silly example might be to have the device
sleep as long as possible then blink out the temperature on
interrupt. long intervals on timer a I understand, but I am still
wrapping my head around the combination of that and the temp
examples...

I think I can comment on the LPM question. I just responded to a post
on NJC's site to explain why you don't use _BIS_SR(LPM0 + LPM4). In
testing that out, the ISR I wrote only cleared the interrupt flag.
Stepping through the code in the debugger, I could see the SR bits
clear when the interrupt was flagged, then reset to the LPM state when
it was handled, with no command on the part of the code. So I think
it's correct to say you don't need to reset the LPM after an
interrupt, it's automatic. I'm recalling there's also a command that
can bring it out of the LPM if needed, but I'll have to look at that.
I guess this means I'll start looking into a tutorial on LPM's for my
blog right away.

@Beretta

I am really looking forward to your LPM tutorial post. The low power
modes are one topic I should probably understand better. I feel
limited though as far as these modes go since I don't use an external
crystal for my project; from what I understand that seriously limits
me as to which low power modes I can use. One of my next few blogs
will be about powering the LaunchPad externally, which I think will go
perfectly with your low power mode post since I will not be discussing
the low power modes too much.

@Bill
The only reason I can think of that they have that second GND pin is
because you can never have enough ground pins available. There are
lots of times where you connect the ground pins on different boards
but not the VCC. For example I am powering my LaunchPad with a 3.3V
power supply, but the FTDI board I am using is powered from the USB
bus, the grounds are tied together. (Be careful though with what power
supplies you use when tying grounds together, weird things can
happen).

TI doesn't specify the exact LED they use in the BOM, so if you are
really curious I would recommend measuring the resistance across it
with a multimeter when the LaunchPad has no power connected, then
measure the voltage drop across it when the LED is on. Then V = I*R
it.

As far as determining how much power your project consumes, this is
very tricky. Dave's EEV blog discusses how burden voltage on
multimeters screw up readings when measuring small currents. If you
want a rough theoretical estimate try this: look at the data sheets
for how much current is drawn in each mode you will be operating in,
also determine how much current your LED draws. Create a simple ratio
for all these numbers depending on how long and how often they are on
for, then add up the values. The goal is to find the average current
your circuit draws over say, an hour. Then you can easily divide the
amp hours of a battery by your average current to find how long the
battery will last (theoretically of course). Hope that makes sense.

Good idea for a low power project. Since I plan on discussing ADC's
soon, maybe I can write up a project that sends one temperature
reading to the computer every button press, or saves the value in
memory, or displays the value on some kind of display for a set time.
It should last years on a battery! (Depending on how many times you
press the button :-P)

Good info on the power stuff. That is not a problem I normally have
to consider.

extra access to ground is always good, and I looked over your earlier
post with the schematics and see that they are tied so I only was
really wondering if there was a specific compatibility with another
device they had in mind with that layout

I thought I just ran into the limitation you were mentioning about not
having an external crystal while trying to build the temp project I
had mentioned. it seems that SMCLK is the only clock that works
without the debugger and ACLK is the one you want for long durations,
but some poking about and I found the command to change ACLK to not
rely on an external reference "BCSCTL3 |= LFXT1S_2" and it seems to
work without the emulator connection.

what is the limitation you were referring to, just that it is less
accurate timing?

anyway, I took a stab at the blinky thermometer idea I mentioned
earlier. you can see the code here :

http://bill-landers.blogspot.com/2010/08/msp430-launchpad-low-power-thermometer.html

most likely I have done some things poorly, but it seems to work
correctly...

A couple more links;

http://students.cs.byu.edu/~cs124ta/- a course from BRIGHAM YOUNG
UNIVERSITY in wich they use msp430

http://www2.elo.utfsm.cl/~lsb/elo325/elo325.html-Seminario de
Computadores I. Diseño con microcontroladores. I think is the only
thing I have found in spanish.

Bill,
http://mspsci.blogspot.com/2010/07/tutorial-08-beating-heart-bcs-part-i.html

I would recommend taking a look at beretta's post above on clocks if
you haven't already. If you want some extra help on understanding the
clocks better, post on either this group or the 43oh.com/forum/ . Make
new threads, help start the community. :-) I'll also comment on any
post you make about the limitations I mentioned in my last message.

BCSCTL3 |= LFXT1S_2;

As far as the line of code above, this sets the source for the clock
as the LVOCLK. I will not discuss more about this here, or your code
here, since this is a link thread :-P. i would recommend posting your
code on either this group, or the 43oh.com/forum/ and hopefully some
people will be able to discuss your code with you. :-) I will be
watching both places so I will help out a bit when I have time.

I vote we try to keep this a link thread.

@juan
Cool links! The first one has some very interesting "How To" articles
hidden in there.

I have created two new threads to move the off-topic conversations
into:

tutorial suggestions: https://groups.google.com/group/ti-launchpad/browse_thread/thread/ae108e7e8758dd7a

and

beginner questions: https://groups.google.com/group/ti-launchpad/browse_thread/thread/f6577f02537f2cef

Anybody want to purchase the following domain from me for $9:
www.tilaunchpad.com

When the launchpad was first announced, I purchased the domain
thinking that I would develop it...reality of that task quickly set in
and I haven't done anything with it. I paid $10 for it...just contact
me if you are interested.
