John,
Thanks for sharing this. Interesting perspective, but also wholly wrong.
FWIW – I wholly disagree with the premise of the article
The authors are in a bubble of hardware hackers – for whom going to the open source FOSDEM conference is a regular thing.
In the real world, very few people have the tools to write code, let alone control physical objects like LEDs.
For the non-FOSDEM goer (which is MOST of us), turning on an LED or controlling the color of an RGB LED is still a big “a-ha!” moment!
It is exciting to see a line of code – that the coder has written - control the light or play a tone.
The sense of agency is empowering. We have all seen this and experienced this ourselves.
Combine a few of these lines and you have yourself a sound-and-light show :)
“Physical computing” is still very much a thing. And we should still use it to excite and engage students who are right to ask “why learn to code?”
To paraphrase a meme:
Tired: print(“Hello World”)
Wired: color.rgb(R, G, B)
I wish we never get jaded enough to think that interacting with the real world through teachable lines of code is humdrum.
Thanks,
- Harshal

Hi Cassie,
> I was wondering if anyone has used CoDrones in the classroom
That’s one of the intents of the sessions on Friday – to discuss how drones are being used in the classroom today and what the educators think of controlling them with Python on TI-Nspire CX II
We have three sessions on Friday – all of them will be similar in content.
If anyone has additional questions or comments about drones + TI technology (now or after T3IC), you can ask here OR email me, Erick Archer and Steve DeBauge directly.
Thanks,
- Harshal

Tania,
See TI Codes Tello drone lessons for project ideas. The coding will be slightly different but the outcomes should be similar.

I want to clarify that the Tello drone was more complicated to set up.
And it is no longer available for purchase.
The new drone is the RoboLink CoDrone EDU which is much easier to configure and use.
I think John was only referring to the activities for the Tello drone (not the equipment)
Some of the activities will apply to the CoDrone EDU – but the details of connection and configuration will be very different.
Another important note – the TI-Nspire CX II support for the CoDrone EDU is still under development.
We will have some classroom activities once the TI-Nspire CX II HH OS is ready for release – likely in the late summer or back-to-school timeframe.

Thank you, Cassie! I looked into the Tello resources on the TI site and it’s a lot to take in and parts to have that the drone didn’t come with, so I’d love more guidance but I’ll look into Carnegie Mellon and figure it out. Thanks Tania Get

Ditto: activities for the Tello drone (not the equipment)
I have not had the opportunity to use the CoDrone Edu (yet). Sounds MUCH easier to connect to TI devices. Will know more soon!

John

> Is there a codrone module for python in the TI site yet?
Not yet.
There is an experimental version that we will use at T3 this week.
Controlling a CoDrone EDU requires an OS update for TI-Nspire CX II in addition to a Python module.
We will be using prototypes of both this week and will update them over the next couple of months.
We plan to release both – the new TI-Nspire CX II HH OS and the Python module in late summer.
If you have CoDrone EDUs in your classroom and are willing to use pre-release versions of the software to help test the system, please let us know.
Thanks,
