All,

Texas Instruments would like to share with you two opportunities for doing STEM projects with middle and high school students.

We have developed and piloted a set of projects using the TI-Innovator or Rover that worked well with students. See the project descriptions and links to detailed information below.

In-class Opportunity

The first opportunity is in the time after state exams and AP exams when many teachers are looking for interesting and challenging activities for students.

For a limited number of classrooms, ~15-20, TI will provide TI-Innovators, sensors, motors, etc. along with online (teleconferences and webex) training to help you prepare the project.  You will provide the TI-84 CE or TI-Nspire CX calculators. We encourage you to work with a teacher of another subject to enhance the cross-disciplinary nature of the projects. Our hope/plan for future years is to grow the number of classrooms taking advantage of this time in the school calendar to build their own self-sustaining tradition of engaging the students with STEM projects.

Summer Camp Opportunity

The second opportunity is for hosting summer camps. For these camps, TI will provide online (teleconferences and webex) training and a loan of a practice kit of equipment.

The host will provide the graphing calculators, TI-Innovators and other equipment (sensors, motors, etc. ) for the students.  The equipment for the projects will be available through TI dealers in June. We are aiming for 20-50 sites this summer. Our hope/plan for future years is to grow to several hundred sites offering summer STEM camps annually.

As background, at the T3 International Conference in San Antonio, we talked with three people who are very serious about the first opportunity and 8-10 who are serious about the second opportunity.

If you are interested in either opportunity, please contact Dave Santucci (dsan...@ti.com) and Erick Archer (ear...@ti.com).

We look forward to hearing from you.

Regards,

Dave Santucci and Erick Archer

Pet Car Alarm Project

Level: Middle School or early High School

Summary: Pets suffer when left unattended in a car with the windows rolled up on a hot sunny day. The temperatures inside a car may reach greater than 40?C above the outside ambient temperature within an hour due to a greenhouse effect within the closed car. A car equipped with a pet-smart alarm could prevent harm to a pet left inside a hot car by taking action to cool the interior and notify the owner of impending pet harm.

Challenge: Understand the science behind the greenhouse effect and use math, computer programming and engineering to design and build a pet-smart alarm system using a model car.

Smart Irrigation Project

Level: High School

Summary: This is an integrated STEM project that challenges students to build an irrigation system. Students will learn and use concepts in computer science, environmental science and engineering.

Digital Mood Ring Project

Level: Introduction for all levels

Summary: Bring science and coding together (no coding experience necessary) while developing a mood ring! The science of color mixing is explored while determining the right body temperature thresholds.

On Ramp to Robotics Unit 1 (Motion) with Mars Rover Challenge

Level: Middle School/ early high school

Summary: Students will learn and use basic concepts for robotic vehicle control along with math concepts to write a program to drive their Rover around the base of the Olympus Mons volcano on the surface of Mars. Note: Also, includes concepts to give students an on-ramp to participating on robotics teams.

Heidi,

  1. Should the summer camp be free? It is up to the camp host to decide whether to charge a fee or not. We know that there are a lot of different situations and ways to make camp budgets add up.
  2. Are the recommended grades 7-8-9? We developed the Pet Car Alarm and Mars Rover Challenge with middle school students.  They should be a good fit for grades 7-9. The Smart Irrigation project is a little more advanced, we had 9th-11th graders in the club that did this project. I can imagine some middle school  students doing the project.
I hope that this helps.

All,

We want to close the loop with a report on the post-exam and summer camp opportunity that we shared with this group and others in March.

There were 54 events, 26 post-exam in the classroom and 28 summer camps, involving about 1900 students.

We are aiming to reach 4 times the number of students and teachers during the 2018-19 school year and following summer.

We have another opportunity to borrow equipment to do TI-Innovator or Rover projects during the fall and winter in the works. We will be sending more specifics on the opportunity early next week.

We look forward to working with you again this school year.

Regards,

I am scheduled to conduct a 5-day coding/STEM/CE/CX summer institute at West Chester University (PA) next summer - the week of July 15. Hoping for sufficient enrollment - need at least 20 to make it a go. Will share more info when the flyer is available soon.

Regards,

         John

Thanks Dave,

We’ve finally kicked off the engineering course here at Dominican and we have 3 sections.  The girls are doing great.  I’m teaching them everything from mesh circuit analysis to Motorola 6 sigma theory.

I’ve bought some small USB breakout boards and after we cover binary math I’m going to show them on the oscilloscope how the TI-84 communicates with the peripheral devices through serial binary math.  I’ll get some pics to send you when I do that.

That is awesome, Dave!  We are planning to offer a Coding Academy in June 2019 and use TI Rovers again.  Our students LOVED working with them during the Coding Academy 2018.

Dave

I think the school I retired from might be ready for this now.  Last year was too crazy for the teacher - he had just had his 5th child...

Dave if you want I could host something in Worcester area but would need to recruit teachers. Let me know if you have nothing in the New England area. If you need something Portsmouth Va area I could try to work with grand children’s school and teachers.

We can recruit Paschal In Fort Worth or the BRIT Center to maybe host also. Just ideas...or the GIRL Scouts and BOY Scouts would be good too! I have friends who are leaders in College Station and we can maybe do something with them!

I have a teacher in Los Angeles who would interested in hosting one too!

In case I didn't answer with clarity, I think Hawken Upper (and/or Middle) School would like to host!   I can also run this by GCCTM (Greater Cleveland Council of Teachers of Mathematics) to see what the interest level is?
