Boughtthe HP ENVY 5642 today and installed it wirelessly to my wifes PC fine with zero issues. I tried using the same install wizard on my PC and get all the way to Network Device Installation. It completes but in devices and printers it still has the generic printer icon and says Driver is unavailabe. Sometimes It finishes and says unsuccessful network installation. The printer is fully connected to the network and the configuration print showed no problems. I have uninstalled and reinstalled all software several times. I tried the HP Scan Doctor which tells me all the drivers aren't installed and just redownloads the installer I used in the first place and I go through all the steps to the same result. Any help would be very much appreciated.

So I got it to work. Even though it shows the printer twice as a printer to set up I had to click that it wasn't listed and then select my printer is older. After that only one ENVY printer showed up and when I selected it it actually installed correctly and test printed a page. It took a few minutes for the printer to finish setting up, but it works perfectly now. Thank you for all the help.

I was having the same issue as this problem. I followed the steps but when I tried to let windows install it, I got a message saying, 'Windows can't install the HP Officejet PRo 8610 kernel-mode print driver. To obtain a driver that is compatible with the version of Windows you are running, contact the manufacturer.' The most frustrating part about this is that this computer was working fine with the printer until the hard drive crashed twice. now I can not get it connected to the printer! Can you help?

Since I am not able to reinstall operating systems, I took it to the geek squad to perform what you said. They reinstalled the operating system for the second time and installed the hp drivers for the printer at the store. I got home and it connected the first time. Thank you for your help!

The reason that you cannot directly connect to a USB Printer is because iPadOS does not support installation of individual device drivers - other than via a manufacturer provided App. Connection of a USB printer on any computer (such as a PC, Mac) requires installation of a matching device driver.

The reason for mentioning AirPrint for the USB only model is difficult to understand. Could it possibly just be a couple of typographical errors, or is there somehow a way or idea of using AirPrint via a USB connection to a network (print server)?

Anyway, the best solution in this case would of course be if you could get a 1000w printer instead. If that is not possible, using an extra/older Mac as a print server could perhaps be of interest (see, for example, the Macworld article -to/ipad/print-ipad-iphone-wireless-3459464/).

I've already installed hplip, it printed a test page, but it won't print from any program. It shows the printer in the list of printers, and it's checked as the default printer. I've restarted a couple times.

When I send something to the printer, a pop-up shows that a document was sent to the printer - but there's a triangle with an exclamation point in it next to the message. A few seconds another pop-up indicates that the printer has completed printing the job but it didn't print anything.

I'm glad you asked this because it took me quite some time to figure it out myself. hplip doesn't support the HP Laserjet 1000 without patching - which is unfortunate because it's a pretty affordable and a pretty decent printer. In order to get the hplip drivers to work you need to patch them with this patch. You'll also need to install these dependencies first:

Another thing I am not sure if it made a difference or not, but I've also installed some dependencies from @Marco Ceppi answer (replacing python-imaging with python-pil though). However,

I did not install the patch he described.

Sidenote:

Already tried to install this printer? If you don't have any other existing printers - remove the old with hp-setup -ir (repeat untill it tells you error No device found - that is the printer-clean state).
