Dear Thurston Nature Center Neighbor,
We are having a short break from the heat wave we've been under, so it's time to get a couple projects done in the Nature Center.
We have scheduled a Family Work Day for this Sunday, June 30, from Noon - 4 to do two projects.
One is to put wood chips on some of our trails. We have wood chips in the usual locations on Prairie Court (west side) and Yorktown Drive (east side near OHAC Pool). The map below shows the highest priority trails. A few wheelbarrows, rakes and shovels will be located by the tool shed at the NW corner of the Thurston playground. If you can bring some of your own, they will likely come in handy. Please make sure that the Nature Center’s tools are returned to the shed at the end of the work period.
The other project is to reduce muddiness on the trail north of the pond. Two rain gardens are there to capture water coming down the slope, some of it from sump pump discharges. Some water goes around these rain gardens, and some seeps through the berms. We want to create ditches on the uphill side of the path to direct this extra water to low spots, and then move it through pipes under the trail, to the pond side. Some small trees will need to be removed to accomplish this, so we will have a few tools available for that. But if you can bring a pointed shovel, axe, saw, adze (mattock), or pick axe, those would be very helpful.
Thank you!
