So should the live work or how do we fix this?

I had same problem. Switched to the Hotmail Live option and it works
again.
The live option was intermittent on my specific setup in the past but
now seems to be the way to go.

Is that the end of the road for Hotmail in Thunderbird, or will you be
able to make it work in the future?

I got it working using the pop3 settings found on Hotmail.com, but
only after I uninstalled the WebMail plugin.

I used this link as a guide:
http://windowslivehelp.com/solutions/settings/archive/2009/02/18/how-to-add-your-e-mail-account-to-microsoft-outlook-express.aspx

Make sure that for username, that it has the @hotmail.com extension.
You also need to set up your outgoing server.

Check the "Webmail-Hotmail" add-on. I have v1.2.22. I think that as of
1-Sep, Microsoft stopped Hotmail. I fixed my problem by clicking on
the Options button for the add-on and then changing from Webdav to
"Hotmail Live (new website)" under the Mode tab.

I had to set my username to include @hotmail.com for both incoming and
outgoing server settings.

I Tried that, also, switching to new and old sites, with No success.
I also Went to Run "%APPDATA% to get to My Profile Folder/Roaming, and Copied my Whole Thunderbird Folder, to another place, for safekeeping, then, Started Thunderbird, Deleted my Hotmail Account, Closed Thunderbird, to save changes to the Profile Folder. I then Restarted Thunderbird (Using Vista), Made sure Webmail Hotmail set to new site, Rereated the Webmail Thunderbird Account. This Gave Same errors, but I had also lost all those thousands of emails, as I could not redownload them. So I Closed Thunderbird, ReOpened the Profile/Roaming Folder and Deleted the altered thunderbird Folder, and replaced it with the bsckup Folder I Had Taken.

It started happening right on the 2nd Sept, as told by Microsoft, So is this an change needed to the Webmail to force it to work, or because too many poeple have noved to the new system,  or because Microsoft has made it Pop, Web or Microsoft Applications only, or could there be blockages by ISP's if traffic too big.

If it is POP only, then that is a step backwards, and will hurt Microsoft.

:-(

What's new in Windows Live Hotmail?

[January 2009]
Updates…
  • Since October we've built "ever-growing" storage, added more themes, and have launched an update that'll make it easier to manage and share calendars with friends, family, and groups. Some folks are already seeing this stuff. Others will see it soon.
Other new stuff
  • See your many e-mail accounts in one place, even if they're not Hotmail accounts—give them each a folder or put them in your inbox. (coming soon)1
  • Make plans with friends and family more easily. When you're writing a message, it's just one click to add local maps, directions, movie times, and more.2
  • A consolidated address book. Put all your friends, family, and acquaintances in one place – even people you've connected with on many non-Microsoft services like Facebook. Free yourself from frustrating hunts for people's current contact info. Find folks easily when you want to send them e-mails, IMs, photos, and more.
  • A little more social. Go to the Today page to see what's new with the people you know.2
  • Links to other cool services. Windows Live is more than just Hotmail and Messenger. You can store up to 25 GB of photos and files on SkyDrive and share them, make a personal homepage at http://home.live.com, and more.
1We're rolling out a simple tool that will fetch your e-mail from many non-Hotmail services like AOL, Gmail, and Yahoo! Mail Plus. That way you can see e-mail from those accounts organized all in one place without having to log into each service separately. (For Techies: this fetching tool uses POP to import e-mail from other services into Hotmail). Depending on when you are reading this, you may already see this tool in the Options page of your Hotmail account under the section titled "Send and receive mail from other e-mail accounts." If you don't see it there yet, you will in the coming weeks.
2We're trying this cool feature out in just a few countries to get feedback and then hope to make it available in more countries.
[October 2008]
It's faster and better!
  • Enjoy a cleaner look and faster performance.
  • A combined "classic" and "full" version of Hotmail means everyone gets access to all the great features Hotmail has to offer. One version = greater simplicity.
  • You choose how to display your reading pane to preview messages - side, bottom, or off.
  • A great new contact picker makes it easier to look up contacts when writing an e-mail.
  • Type the first few letters of a friend's name or an e-mail address who you want to send an e-mail to, Hotmail fills in the rest.
  • Dress up Hotmail with one of several new design themes.
We're also building some new stuff in Hotmail (scheduled to be available by early 20091), including
  • Ever-growing storage. Your inbox capacity will automatically increase as you need more space2.
  • IM through Hotmail. See if your Messenger contacts are online and say "Hi! :-)"
  • Helpful new calendar features that make it easier to share your calendar with friends and family.
1Some customers may see this stuff earlier.
2We've designed Hotmail storage to grow with you, but at a reasonable pace. That means you should have plenty of storage unless you suddenly want to store the planet Jupiter on Hotmail, in which case we'll send you a nice e-mail asking you to please not try to store planets on Hotmail (although gradual storage of planets, moons, and asteroids is ok).

Ok Today 2009.09.03 I did the following
I changed to the new site as some has recomended here.
Then I signed in to my hotmail account since some one told about a
startup message.

Once I clicked don't show again on this startup message and used new
site hotmail worked.

I hope this helps those who haven't got it to work yet.

No, Wottan, You Got It Right First Time....

Well Done, It Works for me, now....

Yesterday, I had Changed to New Site, in Website, in Hotmail, Webmail Settings, with no Seccess.

15 minutes ago, it still did not work....

However, after Reading Your Post, I Went to Hotmail Live on the Website, and, when the popup window came up, telling me about all the new services, This Time  I Checked/Ticked the Box saying "Do Not Show this Popup next time I Sign into Hotmail" (Previously I left it to show each time, thinking I might need info on that page to get my Hotmail working), went into the inbox, and then signed out of Live.

Thunderbird was already open.

I then Tried hitting get mail, in Thunderbird Hotmail, but with no success.

I Then Exited Thunderbird, and restarted It, and, this time it told me I have Thousands of Unread Hotmail emails, and downloaded everything, though duplicated most of them.

So Thanks, Wottann.....

Rules,

Ensure Hotmail set New Site, in Thunderbird Hotmail.
Go to Live Website
Click "Do Not Display Tips on Start Up" in Website.
Went into Inbox, but may not count.
Sign Out.
If Thunderbird is already open, close it.
Open Thunderbird, and HopE WILL work.

(Although I got duplicate messages, that may be my fault, as I had been Cutting and Pasted my Profile, yesterday, a bit, but if it happens to you, post back...

Thanks, Again, Wottann, Great Spot...

Sorry for Typos :-)

Hi,

it's stiil not working for me. I switched the Dev to Windows Live, but
I still get the message "login to the server localhost failed". And
it's weird, after I got the error, in the preference of Webmail
Hotmail it will change back to Dev. Does anyone have the same problem?
Any solution? Thanks!

P.S I use imap in webmail hotmail. And I don't like the solution of
pop3 with pop3.live.com, I want to be able to use imap with my hotmail.

The only way you will get an IMAP experience with Hotmail (now that
Microsoft has terminated WebDav access) is to use the Windows Live
Mail client. With that email client Microsoft allows their newer
proprietary DeltaSync access which provides the IMAP type experience.
You cannot have IMAP for Hotmail with Thunderbird as the mail client.

Thank you for your answer alanrf. But I'm using Linux, so Windows Live
Mail is not an option for me.

But, I still can't understand, why I can't switch to Windows Live
under the WebMail option.

I Thought that Was the Case, But it is Not....

I Had several days with Negative Vibes on Hotmail, Thunderbird 2 on Vista, all started the 2nd Sept 09....

However, after finding a Solution, from another poster, It Now Works Perfect in IMAP Folders in Thunderbird 2 Webmail Vista. Has Been Working perfect for a few days, now.

First, I:-
Went to Tools> Addons> Webmail Hotmail (Not Webmail)

Changed Setting From WebDav to "Hotmail Live - New Website".

Close Thunderbird.

Use firefox/Opera/Internet Explorer Browser to Locate MSN or MSN UK (I Used UK)

There was a Popup Window advertising new features.

There was a Box to Check to set to never show popup again.

I Found that, as long as this popup was poping up, in Firefox, I was unable to access my mail in IMAP in thunderbird.

This May Be a Coincidence.

I Checked not to show Pop Up Again.

I Also Went to look through Inbox, in Firefox.

Signed Out Live.

Closed and Started Thunderbird a couple of times, and suddenly Worked, and Still Does.

Good Luck :-)

Where the heck are you seeing the WebDav and Live.com settings at?
They used to be there in tools>add-ons>hotmail options, but I don't
see it there anymore.

And I never saw any pop-up on the hotmail site.

Dangit.

Same thing here. I had the negative vibes problem once in a while, but
when it popped up, i usually change the settings from live to webdav
or similar, and it would work. Now i can't even change those settings
any more, the add-on looks different.

I checked my e-mail through a browser, to see if my hotmail has
changed to the updated version mentioned above, but it hasn't
changed.

The Webmail - Hotmail add-on version 1.2.23 does not have Webdav/
Windows Live in options:

Hotmail 1-2-23

* Fixed decoder
* Removed Webdav and IMAP code

I found here that version 1.2.24b3 is working, i am trying to find
where is the download for this version.

I have had the same negative vibes problem and tried the fix suggested
in the link below. I can only get the incoming Hotmail POP3 connection
to work. The outgoing smtp.live.com server connection times out with
"...The server may be unavailable or is refusing SMTP connections...".
Any ideas?

Thx.
