Why does Hotmail keep redownloading deleted
messages? Even after I go to hotmail.com and
delete them there.

What version of Hotmail are you using

Can you try compacting the folder

Compacting didn't help.
I'm using hotmail live now but had same prob
with old hotmail. After I delete mail, the first
time I "get mail" it retrieves nothing, the 2nd
time it gets the deleted messages. Just now
I got the Bad vibes and restarted TB. Then it
it was fine until I delete some new messages.

Thanks, Joe

What options do you have set for your Hotmail account in Thunderbird
in terms of "keep messages on the server"?

In the Hotmail extension (POP tab for the account):

do you have the box "Download unread email only" checked or unchecked?
have you specified any folders to be downloaded?

Unread Only = checked
No folders specified.

It's strange. It redownloads deleted message and
won't download new messages until I restart TB.
When I restart Thunderbird I get the new messages.

The option you have selected "Download unread emails only" in the
Hotmail extension is really not compatible with POP protocol. I
understand why the developer has put it there but using it means, for
example, that *absolutely no* deletions you make on Thunderbird will
be reflected back to the Hotmail server.

With this option selected if you go back into your Hotmail account on
the server and reset a message as unread then it will be downloaded to
Thunderbird again. Is it possible that you are doing this?

I have tested today with a Hotmail Live account with your setting and
it works just fine for me.

So a couple of questions.

Which version of Thunderbird are you using?

Which version of the Webmail and Hotmail extensions do you have
installed?

Everything is the very latest versions.
As mentioned, even if I delete them at hotmail.com
they redownload. But new ones don't. I think I'll
reinstall the whole shooting match. I don't get
these issues at home as much as at work.
I'll let you know.

Nope. I finally uninstalled and deleted all profiles etc,
reinstalled and have same behaviour. Deleted
messages get redownloaded and new messages
only appear when it is first started.

Oh well, Joe

Still has same behaviour.
It only seems to be a problem at work.
Maybe, it's some firewall setting.

Do you have some kind of caching proxy at work?
Do you see the updated mailbox if you log on to the web interface?
Does refreshing the web interface help to avoid the downloading
problem?

If this turns out to be the problem, there may be a way to force the
cache to refresh.

(Is it the same computer at home and work, or different?)

Everything is normal on hotmail.com.
Refreshing there doesn't help.
Only restarting TB updates deleted/new messages.
I don't know anything about our proxies at work.
Two different computers.

No biggie, I'll live with it.
Thanks, Joe

It could be a different TB extension. You might try disabling all of
them except the Web-mail pieces. If that works, you can turn them on
until you find the offender.

I've disable all non-Webmail add-ons.
Still has same problem.
Thanks, Joe

Just a note to say I've confirmed it must be related to my
work network. Last night I had the identical problem at home
and was worried until I remembered I was connected to
work thru VPN. The problem went away when I disconnected.
It's a strange problem but I'm not going to worry about it.

Thanks, Joe
