Hi all,

I have been a hotmail user for years with Outlook or OE and such as
for many people I am now facing the problem of the disparition of the
DAV protocol.
Up to know I have been using only DAV and IMAP for my professional
inbox, so I have no experience with POP3.

If I understood correctly, thanks to the webmail-hotmail extension, it
is possible to download the content of the hotmail folders and to sort
the emails using filters. In my case, I am not interested in this
feature (I do have plenty of hotmail folders, but without real POP
synchronization, using the web interface in unfortunately still the
best solution).

My question is therefore: now that hotmail is accessible via POP3 for
all hotmail users, are there any other webmail-hotmail features that
would justify the use of this extension, rather than directly
connecting to pop3.live.com?

I do not want to delete the emails from the server as soon as I
download them, but only when I decide to delete them (therefore I set
up "leave messages on server ... until I delete them").
With the POP protocol, if I delete a message in Thunderbird, it will
remain on the server, right?
Woud it be different if I use webmail-hotmail?

Thanks in advance for your answers!

Yes your messages stays the server until delete via the webmail site
if you check the "leave messages on the server" when using the pop3
account. I have yet to see the webmail extension remove the emails
either when clearing the trash can ( kinda was hoping it would).
Probably a good thing though as it prevents accidential erasures when
leaving a copy on the server.

Maybe hotmail will decide to offer the IMAP as free service in the
future; I am not going to hold my breath.

If you use the openpgp encryption ext., I haven't got it work though
hotmail site either as they add taglines to you email. No problem
receiving the openpgp files though just sending. Should to be fine if
sending an encrypted attachment. No problem for me as can send them
through Gmail.

These extensions play absolutely no part in the decision to delete
mail on the server. The rules of the POP protocol are followed
whether you use these extensions or the POP servers provided by
Hotmail. The decision is made by the settings you select in
Thunderbird.

If you select the option in Thunderbird to delete from the server when
deleted in Thunderbird then a message is flagged for deletion by
Thunderbird when you choose to delete it (on any POP account). The
decision cannot be "unmade". Even if you move it from the Trash
folder back to the Inbox in Thunderbird it will still remain flagged
for deletion from the server.

The existence of a message in the Trash folder or clearing the trash
folder in Thunderbird has no effect on the above process.

Hotmail does provide free IMAP services on every Hotmail account but
to get free IMAP services you must use Microsoft Outlook or Windows
Live Mail as your mail client using the Microsoft proprietary
DeltaSync protocol. There are no standard IMAP servers for Hotmail
and not likely to be.
