Thisdiscussion of moving from one medium to another introduces questions about what that transition means, the copyright challenges, how technology changes usage, experience and expectations, along with other considerations. After all, part of how many audiobook publishers got their start was by adapting works that were in the public domain, so they only had to think about the copyright of the performance and not the text.
Q: OK, thank you. So what do you think? Should university presses be pursuing a strategy of AI-narrated audiobooks for titles where the economics do not seem to enable a human-narrated version?
Reluctantly, I do believe publishers will explore this if they are not doing so already. However, it will be complicated. Publishers that are strictly audiobook-oriented will need to attain the rights to produce these audiobooks and also pay for the AI tools. And a question remains if the AI-generated voice audiobook can be copyrighted.
Q: If utilizing AI to create audiobooks is a bad idea, given that this practice may inevitably lead to far fewer human-narrated books (and far less work for voice actors), then what might be the alternative? Is there a way to simultaneously encourage investments in human-read audiobooks while finding some way to create AI-narrated versions for university press books that will never get an audiobook version?
Within that, maybe there is a revenue-sharing model that emerges. After all, already Audible also does this. Publishers could also build an incentive structure for books that are more in demand, either evident through citations or through request buttons on product pages, much the same that Amazon used to do.
Roan King. The uncrowned king of Barnett University. He's like a freaking celebrity around here. It's totally ridiculous. People, by which I mean grown women, actually stalk him on the internet. And around campus. Apparently, he's God's gift to both football and the ladies (I'm using that term loosely). All he has to do is smile, and girls fall right onto their backs before spreading their legs wide. I've heard that he's already plowed his way through half the female population at Barnett.
Secretly hooking up with the team captain's sister was a bad idea. In my defense, the first time I saw her I didn't know who she was. Kind, gorgeous, a little nave. Ginny brightened my world from day one. I knew I was no good for her. She was just out of a relationship, and I had a reputation for having a new girl in my bed every weekend. I tried to do the right thing. Honest. I'm the one who insisted we should be just friends. That lasted about as long as you'd expect. But Ginny? She's the best - best friend, best everything.
Five hockey players, a cabin in the woods...and little old me, Winnie Berlin. Sounds like the start of a fantasy, right? But it's not. It's my reality. It all started when I got lost in the middle of the Canadian Rockies. A wicked thunderstorm sent my car mud sliding into a ditch, and for a girl whose survival skills involve finding the nearest Starbucks, I was in deep trouble. Forced to abandon my car in search of help, I stumbled upon a cabin in the middle of nowhere.
Anna Jones just wants to finish college and figure out her life. Falling for star quarterback Drew Baylor is certainly not on her to do list. Confident and charming, he lives in the limelight and is way too gorgeous for his own good. If only she could ignore his heated stares and stop thinking about doing hot and dirty things with him. Easy, right? Too bad he's committed to making her break every rule.
Fake. That's what we are. That's what we agreed to be. So why does it feel so real? I thought it would have been harder, convincing everyone our school's star receiver was mine and mine alone, but I was wrong. We played our parts so well that the lines between us began to blur until they disappeared completely. The thing about pretending, though, is that someone's always better at it, and by the time I realized my mistake, there was no going back.
Breslin - I was in love with Asher Holden the moment I saw him. Then he hurt me. He wrecked me. He ruined me. I spent three years putting myself together - fixing what he broke. Asher - I finally know who I am. I own it, I embrace it...I'm no longer afraid. Landon - My life was all mapped out. I knew exactly what direction I was heading in. Then I meet her. And him. Now, my heart is split right down the middle.
I never intended to become a stripper. Two years ago, I was in Nashville chasing the songwriter dream. Sleepless nights between day jobs were spent writing rock ballads and trying to make a name for myself. That all changed with one phone call that forced me to return to Atlanta. Needing consistent income to pay the mountain of debt I'd come home to, I traded stripping my soul for stripping my clothes. Then Archer West comes crashing into my VIP room, tempting me to break all of my rules.

I put away my haughty reading perspective, started searching the internet for recordings of the books for my classes, and found so many! This is because many classic books are in the public domain, making them copyright-free and able to be reproduced in different forms by different people and companies.
Using this knowledge, I first came across a website called Book Audio Online which contained a vast amount of titles for free. Even though there were so many books on this website, it was difficult for me to use because the books were not divided into chapters, and if I left the website it would not save my place in my book. Although these are very minor issues in the face of having access to some many books, I kept searching in the hopes I would find an easier-to-use platform.
After trying different audiobook platforms and deciding that Spotify was my favorite, I found that I used audiobooks whenever I could to get ahead on reading. I did have to pay for a subscription, but Spotify has a great deal for students where it only costs $5 a month, as opposed to $10: all I had to do was send them a picture of my OneCard.
When COVID-19 forced colleges and universities online, many institutions continued classes by quickly implementing new technology. As the pandemic wore on, it became evident that institutions would need to implement modern technology systems and rethink operational processes, communication strategies, and enrollment and recruitment tactics if they wanted to support students and remain successful.
