I have upgrade to Mac OS 14 and my smart card reader quit working. Works in safe mode and while booting up. Then stops functioning.Allow Accessories to connect is not visible. However, I can search for the function but not select it.MacBook Air M1, Sonoma Beta.
Mine has stopped working also. I can view the USB Card readers in the System Report, but it appears the readers aren't reading my actual card. Likely a firmware issue. Tried on two different card readers. 2020 MBP M1, Sonoma Developer Beta 2.
The latest update push did not solve our issue. I really relied on my MacBook Air M1 for telework. Now, I have to use a Microsoft device. Not good at the moment. I might need to roll back off the beta program until this issue with trusted USB devices is solved.
The smart card and reader works perfectly in Ventura and worked perfectly in the first developer beta of macOS Sonoma, but somewhere either beta 2 or beta 3 of the developer previews it stopped working.
I have replicated this with a clean install on different Mac hardware and the same issue. This is a Sonoma issue and not a reader or Mac hardware issue as the same reader and smart card continue to work well if I plug them into Ventura machine.
Just to confirm, a clean install of the released public version on 27th September - and still smart cards are NOT working, whereas they work perfectly on Ventura (and did on initial developer builds of Sonoma)
Yeah, it's not completely fixed for me, either. I'm on the RC, or Gold Master, or wherever we are at now. I can use the card reader to open sites in Safari, and to log into our virtual desktop, but once I do that, I can't use it for anything inside the virtual desktop. It can see the card reader but can't read the tokens off it. This same computer (2022 M1 MBP) worked fine the day prior to updating to the RC. No changes to hardware or software apart from the OS itself, and it stopped passing card reader credentials through to the virtual machine.
I GOT IT WORKING in macOS 14.1 Beta (23B5046f) by INSTEAD of connecting by USB, I connected with BlueTooth using the GBDM App (Gemalto Card Reader for Barclays iPortal login) and connecting the card reader by BLUETOOTH (which has NEVER been possible in Ventura, it always failed to connect)
I had been using a Saicoo card reader (FBA_S0201B-SSM) which was working fine on macOS 13 (Ventura). Upon upgrading to Sonoma 14.0, the reader stopped functioning. I then purchased the Belkin F1DN008U card reader and it works out of the box with no additional drivers. I also have heard success with the Identiv SCR3310v2.0 card reader on macOS 14.0. Hope this helps if someone is encountering the same issue. It appears like there may be some card readers that stop functioning on macOS 14.0 due to the built in driver not being compatible.

I must admit that I am not currently a Barclays customer, even though I have been in the past. My student loans were financed by Barclays and I was a loyal customer for a good 10 years after graduating. Based on my experiences with their business banking security software this week, I will never consider them as an option for managing my funds.
I had to set up a Windows 10 64 bit workstation to use a barclays.net USB card reader on Tuesday and it was a most trying task, to put it lightly. After trying to log on to barclays.net using Google Chrome, Microsoft Internet Explorer and Mozilla Firefox - I left no stone unturned - I was getting nowhere. The card reader was accepting an updated PIN without any issues but when trying to log into the web site, it kept failing without any error messages that were worth researching. Not being someone who gives up, I turned to the Gemalto (manufacturer) web site to seek a solution.
After a few hours of wasted time, I came upon an article that indicated that the card reader would not work with 64 bit browsers. By default, Windows 10 uses the Internet Explorer 64 bit version. I had also installed Chrome and Firefox 64 bit versions, therefore my tribulations. I subsequently located the 32 bit version of Internet Explorer - which is installed with Windows 10 64 bit by default but is not the default version - and everything now works.
During the course of my research, I found that Google Chrome is not supported in any flavour. Given that Chrome has the largest share of the web browser market, this is a ludicrous situation. Chrome has been around for a long time so why no support for it? Do Barclays imagine that Chrome shall disappear? I think not. Why no support for 64 bit browsers?
Why on earth do Barclays use a USB card reader for business banking? I am old enough to remember when USB was known as "plug-and-pray", and even though it is now far more stable, it requires software and drivers to get it functional. By using a USB reader, they are also increasing the attack area for malicious software, as indicated by the following warning taken directly from the front page of barclays.net:
I am not a security expert but if you have to issue warnings such as these, should you not be considering another logon security system? I have been using the HSBC banking for system for years and have never had any issues, nor felt any animosity towards their security systems. In addition, the HSBC business banking setup allows for complete mobility; as long as you have access to a browser, you can conduct your business. No software installation is required. A smaller attack area for malicious software as well.
You may wonder why I did not just contact Barclays support for advice when the problem initially occurred? Well, I was party to a conversation with their support staff at a company who were being moved to the barclays.net system earlier this year from the older BIB system. I was truly horrified to hear their support staff recommend that an up to date Mozilla Firefox version be replaced with a very outdated version in order to get barclays.net to function correctly. Given that the banking industry are forever - quite rightly so - reminding us to secure the systems we use to interface with their systems, this was a ridiculous contravention of everything that makes a system as safe as possible. Trying to seek help from such support staff would be a complete waste of time and energy and would raise my blood pressure to unacceptable levels.
I am sure that Barclays have many fine and capable IT staff working for them that are just as frustrated with their systems as I am. Unfortunately, it would appear that the important decisions are being taken by people who don't understand the big picture. With Barclays - and other banks - closing so many branches and therefore expecting their clientele to utilise internet banking, the systems that replace them MUST meet acceptable standards of both ease of use and of security. A word of advice to anyone from Barclays who has any influence over their secure banking system choices: contact HSBC and have them contract out their services to Barclays. It will be cheaper than losing customers.
I am trying to get a HID Omnikey 3021 SmartCard Reader to redirect from a Wyse 5040 ThinOS 8.5_017 into a Win10 Citrix VDI. On a windows client I have to go to the Citrix Desktop Toolbar and switch it to Generic instead of Optimized to get it to work in the VDI. On the Wyse we are not presenting the Citrix Desktop Toolbar. Is there a way to force the device to redirect as Generic automatically? We have WMS and I enabled Smartcard redirection in policy, however I need to make it redirect as Generic.
They advised thin clients running Windows Iot or the like are fine as will run the local driver, however it appears they have not got on their supported list the 3040 running ThinOS and are unable to help further with the integrated PinPad readers like the CT710.
I have done the above and I can see the smartcard reader picking up the smartcard certificates etc but when I try to login to Barclays it still uses the pin pad on the screen and not the one on the card reader. If I use the one on the screen it comes up with private key not found. I am using a Gemalto Ezio Shield Pro SC. Did you actually get the reader to work with barclays using the pin pad on the reader?
