LailaMajnu is a 1976 Indian Hindustani-language romantic drama film directed by Harnam Singh Rawail and starring Rishi Kapoor, Ranjeeta and Danny Denzongpa in lead roles. The film's music is by Madan Mohan and Jaidev. Based on the legend of Layla and Majnun, it tells the story of two star-crossed lovers: Laila, a princess and Qais a.k.a. Majnu, a common man.[1]
Laila and her lover Majnu, better known as Qais, were born to rival clans, the Amaris and the Sharwaris. The two loved each other as children. Their love was such that if one was hurt, the other started bleeding. The film recounts, how as kids at the madarsa, the maulvi asks them to write the name of Allah on their slates. Qais, who is lost in thoughts of Laila, inscribes her name instead. In return, an incensed maulvi canes him on the hand. But it is Laila's hand which starts bleeding. Incidents such as this, spread like wild fire and Laila's father, scared for his daughter's reputation, decides to stop her from going to school. The two clan heads decide to separate their children as it is impossible for them to conceive of the Sharwaris and the Amaris ever being joined by love instead of blood. Laila and her Majnu grow up in different places.
Many years later, Qais and his friends visit Laila's town to buy camels and the stage is set for the two lovers to meet again. One day at the marketplace, they encounter each other and it is love at first sight for both of them. They start meeting each other secretly, all over again. But the villain makes his entry in the form of Laila's hot-tempered brother Tabrez (Ranjeet). He has already had a spat with Qais, with neither knowing the other's true identity. In the turn of events that follow, Qais's father dies at the hands of Tabrez. Qais in turn, avenges his father's murder by killing Tabrez. He is exiled from the town and wanders about in the dunes, like a madman, thirsting for just a look of his beloved. Meanwhile, Laila is married off to a prince, Bakhsh (Danny). Learning of her love for Qais, he promises to keep his distance until such time that he is not able to replace Majnu in Laila's heart. Like all others before him, he is unable to understand the almost divinely ordained love of Laila and Majnu. When he does, it is too late.
Madan Mohan died during the period when the songs for the film were being composed and recorded. It was he who insisted on Mohd. Rafi, temporarily eclipsed by Kishore Kumar, singing all the songs for the hero, Rishi Kapoor, which enabled the veteran singer stage a grand comeback with this film. Tragically, however, Madan Mohan did not get to see the success of the film or its music and it was left to Jaidev to complete the unfinished work. Thankfully, the two great composers created music that was harmoniously alloyed and carried a timeless appeal. It turned out to be an all-hit score.
The songs of the movie were hits. Especially "Is Reshmi Paazzeb Ki Jhankar", "Tere Dar Par Aaya Hoon", " Barbad-E-Mohabbat ki Dua" and "Husn Hazir Hai". "Husn Hazir Hai" also reached number one on the Binaca Geetmala annual list 1977, a rarity for a Madan Mohan composed song.

It is directed by Sajid Ali, presented by Imtiaz Ali and co-produced by Ekta Kapoor, Shobha Kapoor and Preety Ali.[1][2][3][4]
Released theatrically on 7 September 2018, the film met with lukewarm response and failed commercially at the box office. But in later years, it received positive reviews for its story and cast performances and soundtrack garnering critical acclaim, following its digital release led to some outlets assigning the film cult status.[5]
The story is based on Layla and Majnun, a classic folklore. Belonging to a reputed family in town, Laila is a flirt who likes to tease boys who are attracted to her. She meets Qais Bhatt, a boy belonging to a rich family. Despite ongoing legal disputes between their families, the two fall for each other instantly. When Laila's family finds out about their relationship, they fix her marriage with Ibban, her father's political assistant. Even though Laila waits for Qais to convince her father, she breaks up with him when he talks disrespectfully to her father. Qais tells her that he would not follow her anymore and asks her to find him if she ever needs him.
After four years, Qais returns from London for his father's funeral. He avoids meeting Laila. Laila, who is regularly abused by her drunkard husband, the new MLA, decides to meet Qais. When she sees him, she realises that he was struggling all these years with her memories, making him a different person. Laila stands up to her husband and they decide to get divorced. Laila asks Qais to wait till her divorce. However, before the divorce, her husband dies in a road accident. Laila decides to run away with Qais on the day of the funeral but her father asks her not to and promises her that she can marry him after a few weeks. Laila again asks Qais to wait for her.
Qais who had been waiting for her for years, gets a feeling that he will never get united with her and this thought makes him eccentric. He begins to have hallucinations of Laila, he talks to her and eventually runs off to a mountain. His family, friends and Laila search for him for days but he is still missing. Qais however thinks that Laila is with him and starts a life with her in the mountains. He is caught by some people and is brought back to his house. There he recognises Laila but also says that Laila is not one person but she is everywhere and points to different directions.
Qais realises that he has reached the ultimate level of love - everything is Laila for him. She realises that in order for them to be together their souls need to meet. Hence, she commits suicide while holding the note he gave her. The note which said that now if she wants him she has to reach him, indicating again that he is far ahead in love for her and she needs to search for him, reach him. Majnu realises that Laila is no more and runs to the mountains where he stumbles and hits his head over Laila's grave. While dying he sees Laila calling to him from the mountain top. The film ends with a song where it is shown that their souls are together doing everything that they had decided. The film ends with the line, "They lived happily ever after - which is both ironic and true".
Hitesh Sonik composed the film's background score and Niladri Kumar, Joi Barua and Alif composed the songs. The lyrics were written by Irshad Kamil, Mehmood Gaami and Mohammad Muneem. The first song, "Aahista", was released on 9 August 2018.[7] This was followed by the title track, "O Meri Laila", on 13 August 2018.[8]
In the 70s, in his effort to be accepted in changing times and much competition, Madanji had to sometimes reorient himself and yet he retained his signature style based on the situational demands of a film.
Madanji passed away in 1975 at the young age of 51. He had completed the recordings of all songs for MAUSAM, which was a silver jubilee hit but Madanji did not live to see the success. But his biggest commercial success was released in 1976.
LAILA MAJNU was a much-coveted film and Madanji teamed up with director H.S. Rawail after many years, as the director felt only Madanji could do justice to the music, especially after the appreciation for HEER RAANJHA, a few years earlier. Madanji also teamed up with ace poet Sahir Ludhianvi after a long gap since GAZAL in 1964.
The young pair Rishi Kapoor - Ranjeeta starrer was made with much fanfare, and Madanji created many tunes for the challenging score. He recorded 6 songs in his lifetime, while he left behind a rough melody for the seventh. Upon his untimely demise, his close friend Jaidevji was called upon to complete the unfinished song (Kehna Ek Deewana Teri Yaad Mein) and thereafter to create two additional songs required (Laila Majnu Do Badan Ek Jaan and Yeh Deewane Ki Zid Hai).
So even though Madanji composed and recorded 6 complete songs in his lifetime, unfortunately the records did not specify the individual composer names and thus he has always shared the credit for all 9 songs for the film.
The film became a golden jubilee hit the first of Madanjis career... and the music was a major contributor. The Lataji solo Husn Haazir Hai became a blockbuster and the Number 1 song of the year on Binaca Geetmala for 18 weeks, something which had never happened in Madanjis lifetime.
Rafi Saab sang all the songs for the hero, as Madanji was insistent on it, though the director and producer and others wanted other singers for the young hero. Rafi Saab always claimed that he was thrilled to sing in this film and after its success he became the voice for Rishi Kapoor in many later films.

This is hard to stomach! I wonder what the source of Geet Kosh is.
This composition has Jaidev written all over it. One possibility is
perhaps that Madan Mohan composed the tune, died, then Jaidev did
the 'arrangement` and recorded it.

I agree with Rajan that barbaad-e-muhabbat sounds more Jaidev-ish than
MM-ish. But this song also showed up on one of HMV's Madan Mohan
compilations. The evidentiary value of that is dubious, of course. HMV
isn't exactly scrupulous about accuracy in its attributions. In fact, an
entire RJGK could probably be conducted on the theme, "Surprise! This
song's P-stats aren't what you and HMV think they are!" Any takers? Here are some examples:* tum jiiyo hazaaro.n saal from Sujata turned up on a 2-vol Geeta Dutt
compilation. The voice is Asha Bhosle's. I've also heard that kaali ghaTaa
chhaaye moraa jiiya tarasaaye has been attributed to Geeta Dutt on some
HMV cassette.* In the 4-vol. Golden Collection of classical songs from movies, kaahe
tarasaaye jiyaraa has been attributed to Asha Bhosle and Lata Mangeshkar.
It's Usha Mangeshkar, not Lata. Of course, this collection of allegedly
classical songs includes "o sajanaa, barakhaa bahaar aayii" and "jaa rii
pavaniyaa" (great songs, but not classical), in addition to such
pseudo-classical songs as "sur naa saje" and "akeli huu.N mai.n piyaa aa."
* On the Hare Rama Hare Krishna cassette, one version of "phuulo.n kaa
taaro.n kaa" is listed as a Lata solo. Anybody who plays the cassette will
recognize that it's a duet with RD Burman. (The only RDB duet with anybody
besides Asha, perhaps?)There are lots of others....-s
