Set in Washington, D.C., the series follows K.C. The series was first announced as a pilot in pre-production titled Super Awesome Katy in November 2013. The series was set to star Shake It Up star Zendaya, who would play 16-year-old Katy Cooper, an outspoken and confident technology wiz and skilled black belt, who discovers that both her parents are spies who expect her to follow in their footsteps. Production on the pilot was set to begin in early 2014.[2] On November 6, 2013, Zendaya tweeted about the pilot, saying she wants to bring back the "cool Disney Channel", mentioning shows That's So Raven, Lizzie McGuire, The Proud Family, and Kim Possible.[3] It was ordered to series by Disney Channel in May 2014, with the series now under the title K.C. Undercover.[4] The series was released on Watch Disney Channel on January 1, 2015, and was followed by the television premiere on January 18, 2015.[5] The first season consisted of 27 episodes. On May 15, 2015, Disney Channel renewed the series for a second season,[6] which premiered on March 6, 2016. On August 1, 2016, People revealed that the series had been renewed for a third season.[7] The third season premiered on Disney Channel on July 7, 2017, and ended on February 2, 2018.
In Canada, the series premiered on Family Channel on January 23, 2015,[citation needed] and moved to Disney Channel on September 1, 2015. During the launch week of Disney Channel, the episode "Runaway Robot" aired on September 1, 2015, a week before the U.S.[8] The series premiered on Disney Channel in Australia and New Zealand on March 5, 2015.[9] In the United Kingdom and Ireland, the show premiered on March 27, 2015, on Disney Channel. On Disney Channel in Southeast Asia, it premiered in Singapore on March 13, 2015, and in the Philippines on April 10, 2015.[citation needed] The show debuted on the English feed of Disney XD in the Middle East and Africa on October 12, 2015.[10] In India, the series premiered on October 30, 2017, on Disney International HD.[citation needed]
The Disney Channel series, which premiered in 2015, officially came to an end yesterday, February 2. Zendaya, who portrays the show's title character K.C. Cooper, took to social media to bid farewell to her journey as an undercover spy.

Actress Veronica Dunne (who plays K.C.'s best friend Marisa Clark), tweeted two sweet behind-the-scenes photos, adding: "This show changed my life .Thank you to everyone who watched and who laughed. Thank you to the writers who brought Marisa to life. Thank you to each person who set foot on that stage and created a beautiful home. Thank you to my cast who became my family. I am forever grateful."
Kamil McFadden, AKA K.C.'s brother Ernie, tweeted another heartwarming photo, captioning it: "Family Forever." And Trinitee Stokes, who was part of that family as K.C.'s sister Judy, added: "I grew up a lot on this show and learned so many lessons. We had so much fun and shared so many laughs! And when I was in tears in this pic, my family was right there to cover me. I love you."

High-school student K.C. Cooper is a math whiz with a black belt in karate. A normal teen otherwise, her life changes when her parents, Craig and Kira, recruit her to be a spy in a secret government agency known as The Organization. Along with her parents and younger siblings Ernie and Judy -- the latter is a humanoid robot -- K.C. must balance a civilian existence with undercover missions designed to save the world. As K.C. goes about spying, she must keep the newfound career a secret from best friend Marisa.

- Black and Nerdy: Ernie is a very big nerd, and like his family he is black. However, he is also apparently the only nerd in his entire family.

- Non-Action Guy: Standing out from his family, Ernie possesses no combat skills (or many physical skills); however, he will occasionally help out on missions, and participates more in missions that are more cerebral. In one episode, he participates in a mission with K.C. to go undercover as recruits in an all-boys cadet academy. Then he tried to go on a mission that involved subtlety; though thanks to his clumsiness, he botched that up.
- No-Respect Guy: Often feels like this, not without justification (his parents did kind of forget him when they came back from their vacation).
- Playful Hacker: His computer skills often help out on missions (or sometimes just to help his family). However, he is pretty harmless.
- Real Men Cook: When he takes over the culinary duties, he becomes a gourmet chef in one day despite having no prior experience. Might be justified that he learned these skills from his father.
- Teen Genius: Ernie's a genius with technology, especially computers.
- The Smart Guy: Of the group, Ernie is the best with technology and gadgets.
- The Un-Favourite: It's clear his parents prefer K.C. But most of the time he doesn't seem to mind. Whenever his dad tries to bond with him, it's quite awkward for both of them.
- Annoying Younger Sibling: Sometimes acts like this toward K.C. and Ernie.
- Artificial Family Member: She's a robot, but K.C. views her as a sister.

- Jerk with a Heart of Gold: Downplayed. It's mentioned Marisa gets in trouble a lot and doesn't really care for school. But apart from this, she's a good and loyal friend, and is normally quite friendly towards others.
- Secret-Keeper: Following "Photo Bombed" Marisa knows K.C. and her family are spies, but keeps quiet to avoid getting K.C. in trouble and herself mind wiped. Only Ernie is aware Marisa knows their secret.
- Spoiled Brat: Whenever she doesn't get what she wants, she turns her back on K.C. Comes to a head in season 3 when she stops talking to K.C. for not recommending her to the Organization and refuses her apology because she still didn't get what she wanted.
- Tomboy and Girly Girl: Is the girly girl to K.C.'s tomboy. Of the two, she dresses much more femininely and has more feminine interests, such as spending a lot of time chasing cute boys and wanting to join the cheerleaders.
