As I was thinking about some of my highlights from 2012, one of my very favorite adoption stories popped into my mind. I wanted to share it because it is funny, it makes me smile and because it does highlight at least one benefit of being a Transracial Adoptee. Imagine a hot June afternoon; A swim meet; One excited 8 year old (almost 9 just ask him) James in his snazzy swim team jammers (or close copy, I am too cheap to buy the $50 swim team version); An older swimmer (about 12ish I'd guess) giving James a bit of grief for reasons that I still don't know; Or perhaps an energetic James giving the older swimmer grief, I really don't know; Eventually, the older swimmer gets indignant and says "I'm
going to go find your parents;" James happily replied, "Oh yeah, I bet you
can't figure out who my parents are."
I happened to be walking by as this was transpiring. While I stopped and observed, I didn't say a thing. I did couldn't help but laugh - Hee Hee - there are some benefits to
being a Transracial adoptee.
