Pricing is a bit steep – between 6 and 8k (though that’s about 5% of what an industrial laser cutter costs); and it’s not SUPER-powerful, but it’s certainly powerful enough to do some interesting things, like carving terrain pieces out of acrylic or balsawood, engraving acrylic trophies, etc.
I’d like to ask club members if they think it’s a good idea or not...

Well, that’s up to the club members I suppose – I agree, a tool is only useful if it gets used...
I’d imagine the most general uses for it would be:
To engrave MDF board to theme terrain (or pattern already existing MDF items, (like engraving windows onto hobby-shop boxes for example))
To engrave acrylic for custom templates. And /or edge-lit items.
To cut specific structures out of foamcore, balsa or plywood.
To cut thick card for simple or complex papercraft designs.
To cut foam to specific designs for model storage.
Those are the things I can come up with on the fly...
The guys at www.lasercutcard.co.za create flat packs from 1mm cardboard that you then stack and glue to form the shapes you need. Be they buildings, vehicles, scatter terrain, or whatever.
As I said – it’s got potential...
