Most frequently I use Thred to alter pcs designs by changing fills,
converting to appliques and a lot of stitch editing etc. this time I
decided to digitise a cutwork-appliqued design of several leaves
joined with bars. The original leaf was a pcs design which I duplicated
and arranged. I made a few errors with order and wanted to both add to
and remove some of this half completed work..After several failed
attempts, I have the following queries-

1. how do you open a tht file?-- it only wanted to open the earlier
thr file-- I managed to do it by changing the name of the tht file to
thr and resaving somewhere else.

2. when wanting to add a new form to somewhere in the design (another
cutwork bar), is it possible to initially place it after a selected st
where you want it, rather than it being added to the last stitch in
the design and then having to change the stitching order of these new
sts? should I have tried renumbering this later form to change its
stitching order?

3. I could not study the order of the forms with the arrow key-- It
started OK at 0 but only went to form3 and I know I made more than 3
forms in the total design!

hoping you can assist as this has been going on for weeks!! thks--

Elaine, I'm clueless as to your answers (I mainly digitize from skating/dance/boating photos), but I'd love to try cutwork so I hope you find out soon!

Hi Elaine,

I'm rusty on Thred, but I'll take a stab at your questions.

>>>1. how do you open a tht file?-- it only wanted to open the earlier thr file-- I managed to do it by changing the name of the tht file to thr and re-saving somewhere else.<<<

That's right, you do need to re-name the file so the extension reads ".thr" .  There is a little write up on that on this lesson page:

http://www.thredworks.com/le11opnfile.php

I'll paste the relevant text below:

"Thred embroidery files, .THR format. ( THS,THT and THU are back-up files of a THR file, and can be opened by using "View/Backups").   If you want to open a THS, THT or THU file in the usual "File/Open" method, you must first rename them to THR.

When you make a design or even just start to work on one, save your work frequently.  The "File/Save as"feature opens a window that lets you choose where to save the file, and  what to call it.  The "File/Save"  or "Control/S" is used to save the file in the same place it was saved most recently.  Thred saves a file in THR file format and at the same time makes a file in the other chosen format, either PCS or DST.  It also makes three back up files.  If you mess up your THR file some way, you can often rescue the design by clicking "View/Backups".  You will see the four most recent copies of the file you are working on. Click on a file image and it will open. If you want to keep that one, change the file name and save it again.  It is smart to change your file name frequently as you work on a design.  I usually use a number to help keep them straight in my mind.  After you complete the design, but before you forget what you have done, delete the extra partial files. Do not keep all versions or you will forget which one is the best, finished one.  That is why I use a number sequence.

Thred has a Delete Back-ups command. "File/Delete/Backups/"  opens a box with the choices: "For the selected Directory or All Backups".  Don't use it until you are sure you won't need them, but it is not wise to let the computer get too full of old files."

>>>2. when wanting to add a new form to somewhere in the design (another cutwork bar), is it possible to initially place it after a selected st where you want it, rather than it being added to the last stitch in the design and then having to change the stitching order of these new sts?  should I have tried renumbering this later form to change its stitching order?<<<<<

When you want to add a group of stitches, just highlight the stitch you want to be the insertion point and use "Control V" to paste the stitches.

Or you can use a form.  Renumbering one is fine, but since you have a pcs file with no forms to begin with, why not just save your cutwork bar into one>thr file and insert stitches into a differently named PCS file?  It just seems easier to me.  Marion might think differently about it though.

>>>3. I could not study the order of the forms with the arrow key-- It started OK at 0 but only went to form3 and I know I made more than 3 forms in the total design!<<<<

If that's correct it is a bug.  We don't have any other reports of that bug, so you might want to recheck your conclusion.

If you would like to send us a copy of your design, we could look into it.

thks-- have taken your replies on board-- at present the particular
thr file I'm now using does show 6 forms with the arrow keys-- The
design now has 7 so far and I want to make more.. Can I make any
extras past 6 show in order with the arrow keys in case I wish to
fiddle with their order or something? I'm now going thru the design
systematically fixing the orders, rearranging and using different
colours temporarily to help identify the different sections quicky in
the ribbon bar.

Sometimes I wish to change the shape of a bar and found it difficult
to select a form past number 6 as clicking near it would select a st.
I couldn't find how to 'hide stitches to show a form' in the Help but
discovered some old notes I'd made which said to use Shift + frm+---
this worked well but was wondering if that is the only way to select a
form past form6??

I'm very enamoured with the way that Thred allows me to walk thru
stitches to discover their directions, beginnings and ends of sections
etc. especially with the PCS files I like to alter so much.--Elaine

If you draw a select box around a form, that will select it. Also if
you hit escape and then the down arrow, Thred will start with the last
form instead of the first.

It's been so long since I wrote Thred, that I no longer remember how
it works in detail. I hope I am steering you right here.
