Do any of you have specific policies regarding employment? We keep
copies of our client's paystubs on file as verification of employment
and to help contruct their personal budgets and savings goals, and we
typically do not consider under the tabe employment as a valid
alternative because a) we usually cant verify it and b.) often times
these options involve unfair and/or unsafe working conditions for our
youth.

I would love to hear how your programs address youth employment. Do
you maintain any requirements?

Our program requires the program participants to have at least 30 hours a
week of meaningful activity. It can be employment, school, volunteer work,
parenting classes, workshops, training, or combination of any of them. It
has to be verifiable and the youth must provide the verification.

We do the same thing when youth are employed. We do budgets with them even when they are unemployed to give them of sense of the cost of living from a basic level.

If they are unemployed they are required to complete a minimum of 5 job applications per week.

We also require at least 32 hours (FT) of a structured activity of
some sorts. Same examples as previously mentioned, but we do require
an income of some sort. That may be from financial aid, SSI, or
employment. We learned that in our intake paperwork, we can't require
employment as that may discriminate against those that are disabled
and unable to work. We give them time to establish an income with our
help/support. But if they make no strides towards this, that's a
problem. For example, they cannot merely volunteer the entire 2
years, and never have an income, as that would hinder their success
upon exit if they aren't contributing to their forced savings and
practicing budgeting while they have money.
