All PennDOT's Driver License Centers are now equipped to accept payment cards. All PennDOT's Driver License Centers will still accept checks or money orders as forms of payment, but no cash. The Riverfront Office Center Customer Counter currently accepts checks, money orders, and cash. PennDOT will charge a fee of $62 or more for each check returned as uncollectible.

The same 6-month rule applies if you are renewing more than a year ahead of expiration. Most drivers under 65 years of age and ID card holders of any age will receive a card that is valid for eight years. If you received a four-year card in the years 2014 to 2017, it will be converted to an eight-year term at renewal if you are otherwise eligible.
If U.S. immigration documents are used as proof of identity, the expiration of your license will coincide with the departure date on your immigration documents. These cards will be marked "LIMITED TERM".
If the departure date is eight years or more in the future, your card will be valid for eight years. Drivers 65 and older will be issued a four-year license if their departure date is four years or more in the future.

Michigan's new driver's licenses and IDs with higher security features are now in circulation. Residents will receive the new license or ID design if applying for their first card or when renewing/replacing their current card. There is no additional cost for the new card and all valid features, designations, and endorsements on a current license or ID will transfer to the new one. Michigan's old card design featuring the Mackinac Bridge is valid until expiration and will phase out over the next five years.

No. Michigan will continue to issue standard driver's licenses and state ID cards that are not REAL ID compliant. However, as of May 7, 2025, if you plan to fly domestically or enter certain federal facilities, military bases and nuclear power plants, you will need to bring documentation that meets the REAL ID requirements.
You may request a replacement license through online services whether you are in state or out of state. A branch office visit will be required if you have changed your address within the last 10 days or renewed your license within the last four weeks.
