THOUGHT FOR THE DAY

The world around is full of sorrow and strife; you are trying to avoid them and derive a little joy and peace somehow, overlooking the grief and disappointment. Your efforts are like digging a well in a sand heap. The deeper you dig, the faster it caves in, and then, you begin the whole process at a slightly different place! When piles of sensual desires overwhelm you and drag you down to grief, you think of a way out! The only way to get everlasting joy is through Bhakti (devotion); that is the best among the yuktis (the paths dictated by intelligence). That alone gives the shakti (the strength). The seed of devotion grows only in a well-prepared ground. The method of preparation is given in the Vedas. It clearly articulates the code of conduct, the method of living and the ideals to be followed. Adhere to the code of conduct. Even if you have not been able to study the Vedas, listen to the words of those who follow its teachings and have been overcome by the joy of that experience! (Divine Discourse, 10 Oct, 1964)

With the strength of knowledge happiness is sustained.
Sorrow will come to you. Tell me one person to whom it has not come? How much sorrow came to Jesus Christ, to Lord Rama, and to Lord Krishna. But when you have the strength of knowledge, then sorrow doesn’t touch you.
Earlier, before you started doing meditation, when a problem came, you got buried in it, isn't it? Now, once you have come into knowledge and started doing a little meditation and pranayama, even though you come down to zero you get up and move forward again. You bounce back, and that is it!.

What SRI SRI said

A world without violence

http://i1.wp.com/www.wisdom.srisriravishankar.org/wp-content/uploads/candice-seplow-359655.jpg?resize=384%2C253

(In light of the recent Las Vegas shootings, extracts from Huffington Post article written by Gurudev Sri Sri Ravi Shankar on 29.03.13 following the Newton, Conn. USA shootings)

I have this crazy idea… a world without violence. This might appear to be utopian thinking, but we need to dream and we will get there! If we instill pride in being non-violent, in being compassionate, in being helpful to others, our lives will take a new direction. And that should be our unwavering commitment.

It is saddening to see the impact of gun violence on our families and society. An ABC news report indicates that there are more gun retail stores than grocery stores in the U.S. When we have not provided education in non-violence, or equipped people with tools to control their aggressive tendencies, we cannot afford to have so many gun stores making it easy to pursue deadly acts of violence.

Aggressive tendencies can occur in anybody; it is quite natural. But one should be taught how to handle that aggressive tendency in a healthy way. When conflict arises in the mind of an individual, perception, observation and expression are impacted. This in turn impacts communication with the other party. In a conflict zone, the first thing that is needed for resolution is an improvement in the communication between the parties. This can happen only when the mind is calm and is able to respond, rather than react. In order for the mind to be calm, mental traumas need to be relieved. The rhythmic breathing and meditation techniques that the volunteers of The Art of Living use have been quite effective with relieving mental and emotional distress.

The ignorant are fanatically religious, the so called intelligentsia are fashionably atheist, and the wise are genuinely spiritual. It is time that we encourage our young people, our children, to see beyond limited identities and to associate with the common humanity that we are all part of. It is time to tear down the walls between cultures and celebrate diversity. It is time to connect at the heart to heart level and let go of the negative emotions. This is how we can create a violence-free, stress-free society.

How to relieve stress with Sudarshan Kriya?

Nature is replete with various rhythms and cycles – day follows night, night follows day, seasons come & go. Similarly, there are biological rhythms in our body, mind and emotions. When these rhythms are in sync, we have a sense of harmony and well being. When stress or illness upsets the rhythm, we experience discomfort and discontent and feel upset and unhappy.

“We need to do a cleansing process within ourselves. In sleep we get rid of fatigue, but the deeper stresses remain in our body. Sudarshan Kriya cleanses the system from the inside. The breath has a great secret to offer”

THOUGHT FOR THE DAY

Are the flowers you offer in worship created by you? You bring flowers which were created by the Will (sankalpa) of God on some tree or garden and offer it back to the Creator Himself. What is the greatness in offering flowers created by God and giving them back to God Himself? Many people bathe in the Ganges, take the water from the Ganges into their palms and offer it back to the Ganges itself. Is there any merit in this? Let me suggest a better alternative to offer to God. From the tree of your life, select the fruits that you have carefully nurtured and grown, blossoming in the form of good qualities from within, and offer them to God! There is some distinctiveness in that! To promote these good qualities, you may have had to undergo several troubles. But remember, it is through troubles these good qualities have grown and your mind now naturally acquires divine concentration!

- Divine Discourse, May 12, 1981.

    -BABA

Offer everything to the Master.
Your anger,
Your frustration,
All your bad feelings
And your good feelings.
When you offer it all, you become free.
You become light like a flower.
You can again rejoice in the moment.
What remains in you is pure love.

What SRI SRI said

The mind is like a mirror!

The mind is like a mirror, whatever comes in front of it is reflected in it. But a mirror doesn’t cry, “Oh, I got dirty!” when a dirty picture comes in front of it. And it doesn’t jump up and say, “Oh, I have got these wonderful qualities” when something good is reflected.

When you’re driving, you can see in the mirror that there is a garbage can behind your car. Just imagine the mirror identifying itself with the garbage can. Or, imagine the mirror identifying with some beautiful scenery. In both cases, what would you say? It’s a stupid idea, it’s not the case. The mirror is neither the garbage can, nor the scenery. And that is exactly how it is with our own consciousness.

Our consciousness is like a mirror. Different images come onto it, and they all move away. Know this, and be free. When we get attached to any of those images, that is bondage. So, wake up and see – the mind is a mirror.

Anybody you think of, their emotions and their state of mind latches on to you and is reflected through you. If you keep thinking about happy people, you get happy. Thinking about unhappy things, you feel unhappy. That’s why I have said, “Don’t hate anybody.” Not for the sake of the person whom you hate, but for your own sake. Your own mind, your nervous system, will assume the form, shape, and color of that person. The most intelligent thing to do is not to hate anybody, because whomsoever you hate, you get those impressions embedded in you.

THOUGHT FOR THE DAY

In temples or homes, you may have seen people breaking coconuts to offer to God. If you try to break the nut just as it fell from the tree, will it break? No! The fibrous outer cover must be removed to first expose the shell. The fibre protects the shell and lets it grow, preventing blows from the environment. Liberation results from breaking the mind filled with vagaries and wishes. But how can you break it when the fibrous armour of sensual desires encompasses it? So, carefully and persistently, remove them and dedicate your mind to God! Smash it open in His presence. At that very moment, you are set free! The toughest fibre is anger; it is indeed the stickiest dirt! When you get angry, you forget everything and quickly descend to the lowest depth. You lose all discrimination during the agitation. Be Aware! Cultivate virtues assiduously. Virtue is your life-breath, character is the backbone. (Divine Discourse, Oct 10, 1964)

Sin is that which inflicts pain on yourself and also on others. Virtuous action is that which brings peace and happiness to you and also to others.

What SRI SRI said

Celebration is pure vibration

Human life is a combination of matter, i.e., body and spirit or vibration. Isn't it? Pleasure or joy is becoming intense vibration. Joy is forgetting that you are matter and so you become intense vibration. All the carnal instincts will also make you feel intense vibrations momentarily. And that's how they give a glimpse of joy. But the thing is, it is short lived and it makes you dense later on. Pleasure that comes from Satsang is of a higher nature. Mantra and singing create vibrations in the spirit. That's why when you sing, the ecstasy stays for a long time. Pleasure in the subtle is long lasting, energizing, refreshing and freeing. Pleasure from the gross is short lived, tiring and binding.

When you know you are electricity (vibration/energy), then craving, greed, lust and anger disappear. And you become true celebration.

THOUGHT FOR THE DAY

Broadening your heart and making it bigger and bigger, you should make it as big as God Himself. A balloon, in its initial stage, is tiny. If you go on blowing air into it, it becomes bigger and bigger and later explodes. Though beginning with the ideas of 'I' and 'mine', if you ultimately move on to the place that, "all are mine and all are one”, gradually you will become broader in your vision, and then you burst and merge into God who is omnipresent. You should recognise the truth that your life should consist of making the journey from the position of 'I' to the position of 'We'. If all the time you simply stay in the place of 'I', you will remain where you are. This creation is like the bridge which connects man with God. 'I' is one hill. 'God' is another hill. The bridge between the two is the aspect of creation. If you break and destroy the bridge, you can never reach the destination. I am hoping that you plunge into society and do service, and thereby use the bridge to reach God. (Divine Discourse, May 12, 1981)

-BABA

It is quite natural that the one who does not serve, is the one who is stressed, insecure, self-centred, or without wisdom. If there is a little bit of wisdom, service is spontaneous. If you are well cultured and civilised then service is spontaneous. Nobody has to teach you to do service. No one has to tell you to engage in some service activities.

See what happened during the Chennai floods? No one invited people, "Hey! All of you come and help out". The entire youth of Chennai, not just the youth, all the people of Chennai got together and helped each other. These disasters in some strange manner unite people, unite enemies. Disasters compel people to realize their innate human values. If you are intelligent you don’t wait for a disaster to bring out the best side of you.

What SRI SRI said

Don't make a mistake by pointing out mistakes!

Do not tell a person a mistake he knows. What's the use of pointing out a mistake that he knows he has committed? By doing this, you will only make them feel more guilty, defensive or resentful and this will only create more distance. You should only point out the mistake of a person who does not know, but who wants to know. Do not point out the mistake of a person who knows but doesn't want you to know. Often people know the mistakes that they have committed, but they do not want you to tell them. Think of the usefulness of your comments. Before pointing out the mistake of a person, see whether your comments in any way will help to improve the situation, foster love or bring harmony. A magnanimous person would not pick on the mistakes of others and make them feel guilty. However, they would correct them with compassion and care, not through words but through attitudes.

Washington DC had big Satsangs and a lovely boat ride with Guruji. The DC Mayor's office honored Guruji by proclaiming that henceforth August 26th would be celebrated as His Holiness Sri Sri Ravi Shankar Day. Senator Paul Strauss presented this Honor to Guruji at the Elegant Ball Room of the Hilton Capitol in the presence of 1500 people.

THOUGHT FOR THE DAY

When you go to a temple, you see the idol, and very soon, your thoughts are with your footwear you left outside at the gate! This simple thought reveals the depth of concentration you have achieved. Unless you take care of every single aspect, you cannot experience the benefits from your spiritual practices (sadhana)! A water-filled-pot with one, a few or many holes is useless for carrying or storing water, isn’t it? Hence, you cannot achieve liberation by merely going to sacred places, or seeing, touching and conversing with great souls. You must put in your full and complete effort to follow the instructions and their directions. Following the path of Radha, Meera, Gouranga and Thukaram, you must feel an inseparable affinity with the Lord, as inseparable as the sea and the wave. Remember, you are really of the same essence, the same taste, the same quality as the sea, though you have the name and form of the wave. (Divine Discourse, Oct 10, 1964)

-BABA

When the wave remembers that it's nature is the ocean, then the fear of extinction vanishes. Otherwise, a wave always fears extinction, as it has arisen it has to fall one day (per nature). But when it remembers its magnitude, its infinity, the wave gains the strength of the ocean, even when it is a wave. That is the purpose of the birthdays and all the celebrations.

What SRI SRI said

In satsang

15th September 2017 at the Art of Living International Center, Bangalore:

Q. Gurudev, we live in troubled times, the youth is misguided by terrorists, as a Guru & Ambassador of Peace, what do you think is the way out?
Sri Sri: You know, in the centre core of every human being, there is compassion, there is caring & sharing, we need to nurture that. Somewhere when we forget to nurture the human values, and make them believe in things which are selfish, which creates more trouble for the society, this sort of violence will continue.
People get into violence for three reasons: one is, either they are a victim themselves, so they want to take revenge, so they go to violence. Second, they have been pumped with ideology that everybody else is bad and nobody is with you, you have to fight them out and you have to finish them, then they take to terrorism. Third is religious indoctrination, if you go and kill people you go to heaven and there you will enjoy all the pleasures, so this pleasure is not enough, you can enjoy greater pleasure in heaven, this type of indoctrination. These are the three main causes of terrorism.
We need more peacemakers in the world. I think every city should have someone who would counsel & bring inner peace. Unless you find inner peace, you can't find outer peace. And we need many, many, many Ambassadors of Peace on the planet.

Q. Gurudev, what are the biggest challenges a modern-age Guru faces?
Sri Sri: Biggest challenge is prejudice. We have faced this for long time, from last 37 years, so much prejudice about Gurus. And one or two such incidents happen, some rotten apple appears in the society, in the name of spirituality there are some criminal elements, they come up, my goodness, then a section of media, they are waiting to label everyone as fraud.
However good work you do, still there could be some prejudice. And it is not loss for the Guru at all. It only prevents some more good happening in the society, in terms of, there are so many people who need knowledge, who need wisdom, who need meditation, they could be demotivated or they could be deprived of a nectar, a knowledge, which could have saved their life, saved their mind, which could uplift them. That is the painful thing. Because for a Guru, praise and blames are all same, doesn't matter who tells what, doesn't touch at all! Because however whatever you say, truth remains truth.

THOUGHT FOR THE DAY

The flower of ‘compassion to all living beings’ (Sarvabhute Daya Pushpam) is very dear to God. From the seed of Divinity grows the tree of creation. In this tree, the fruits are human beings who are Jeevatma. In each of these human fruits, Divinity is present as a seed. In Bhagavad Gita, Lord Krishna said, "Beejam Maam Sarva Bhutanam" (I am the seed in all living beings in the form of Atma, the soul). Recognising the truth that God is present in the form of Atma in all living beings, being compassionate to all is what God expects from you everyday. God loves the flower of forbearance (Kshama) very much. It is truly the highest quality of a human being. Often you develop narrow ideas, thinking of 'I', 'my family', and treat others as different from 'me'. When you truly love, you develop patience and forbearance. Expand your love to encompass all living beings, that will fructify as forbearance. (Divine Discourse, May 12, 1981)

-BABA

If you look at all of us at the level of the breath, we are all one. When you go even deeper into the subtle layers, you will see that everything is an extension and expansion of the same mind. Just meditate, and be regular with Seva, Satsang and your Sadhana. You will see that in no time a fountain of love and happiness will come up from within you, and you will exude great contentment.

What SRI SRI said

In Satsang

11th September 2017 at the Art of Living International Center, Bangalore:

Q. Gurudev, everybody has ambitions, during the mid-life you may realise that you are not moving towards it or you should relinquish it. How to handle the frustration arising out in either of these situations?
Sri Sri: You have to expand your vision and see many people have similar dreams like you and they have realised it, still are they happy?
We must disconnect our happiness from realisation of our goals. If you can do this, then nobody can disturb you and nothing can frustrate you. But if you think only after I realise this ambition then I will be happy, you know that day never comes.
So, we must see life from a broader perspective.
You know, this frustration that you experience in your life, you must learn to get out of that. Then you can keep your ambition, keep going.

Q. Gurudev, in districts and real life situation, it is observed that process of identity formation and pronouncing the differences is increasing, putting communal harmony at danger. How can the increasing intolerance in general public be controlled when people have taken extreme stands?
Sri Sri: We need more of multi-cultural, multi-religious celebrations, where people of all community come together and celebrate.
I want to give you an example, here in village next door they do Ganesha Festival Celebration, they do Devi Festival Celebration, everybody joins in, Hindus, Muslims, Christians. We must encourage this sort of mingling, number one. Second is, we have to teach people how to be free from stress. This, through yoga, pranayama, meditation.

Q. Gurudev, people around us, such as parents, children, spouse, boss, etc., can be very unreasonable sometimes, how to deal with them when they do not want to listen?
Sri Sri: Have patience. Develop patience. You know tough people around you will bring out the best out of you, you will become much more skillful. If everbody listens to you, everybody is intelligent, then your skill will remain dormant. Here is a chance for your skills to get expressed. I usually say “Tougher the Boss you have, more skillful you become!” Because you will learn how to communicate with a tough boss or unreasonable boss. Similarly when spouse is unreasonable, parents are unreasonable. It calls for patience & skills inside you to manifest.

The eagle is pestered by crows so long as it has a fish in its beak. They swish past it to steal the fish out of its mouth. They pursue the bird wherever it sits for a little rest. At last, it gives up the attachment to the fish and drops it from its beak; the crows fly behind it and leave the eagle free. So leave off sense pleasures and the crows of pride, envy, malice, and hatred will fly away. Practise renunciation from now on so that you may set out on the journey when the call comes. No one knows when that will happen. Else, at that moment, you will be in tears, when you think of the house you have built, the property you have accumulated, the fame you have amassed, the trifles you have won, and so on. Know that all this is for the fleeting moment. Develop attachment for the Lord, who will be with you wherever you go. Only the years that you have lived with the Lord have to be counted as life, the rest are all out of count. (Divine Discourse, Oct 10, 1964)

Make your home God's home and there will be light, love and abundance.

Make your body God's abode and there will be peace and bliss.

Feel your mind as a toy of God and you'll watch and enjoy all its games.

See this world as play and as a display of God Himself and you will repose in the Non-Dual Self.

What SRI SRI said

Mahalaya Amavasya is the day when you remember all the departed souls and thank them and wish peace for them.

There is an ancient tradition in which the family members take a few sesame seeds and little bit of rice, and then they think of their ancestors and say, ‘May you be contented, may you be contented, may you be contented.’
They say this three times and then they drop the little grains of sesame seeds with some water.

The significance of this ritual is to tell the departed that – If you still have some desires in your mind, know that they are like sesame seeds. They are not significant, just drop them. We will take care of them for you. You be free, happy and contented! There is huge universe in front of you. The universe is infinite, so look forward and go; drop whatever is pulling you back. This is called Tarpana.

Tarpana means bringing satisfaction and fulfillment to the departed. It is done to tell them to be contented and move further.
Water is the symbol of love. To give anyone water means giving love.

THOUGHT FOR THE DAY

Imagine your son and servant is at home. If your son is pilfering some things or developing bad habits, you will try and control him by correcting, scolding, and persuading him to return to good ways but will never take him and hand him over to the police – will you? On the other hand, if your servant steals a small spoon, at once, you will consider handing him over to the police, isn’t it? What is the inner significance from this situation? The reason for the difference in behavior is the narrow idea 'this boy is my son’. Because the servant does not belong to you, there is no consideration for forbearance and patience! Cultivate the broad idea 'everyone is mine', then, love, patience and forbearance will grow abundantly. (Divine Discourse, May 12, 1981)

The antidote for ego is naturalness and a sense of belongingness, having a sense of oneness with others. If they do not feel that way then that is their problem. From your side, you should feel natural and feel that you are a part of them, and they are also a part of you. A big shift will happen when you experience this.

What SRI SRI said

Faith is Your Wealth

Faith is a wealth. If you think, by having faith in God you are doing a favour to God, you are mistaken. Faith gives you strength instantaneously. Faith brings you stability, centeredness, calmness and love. You’re having faith in the Guru or God does not do anything to Guru or God. Your Having Faith Gives You Immediate Strength. Faith is a great wealth; it is a blessing.

If you lack faith, you have to pray for faith. But to pray, you need faith. This is a paradox. (Laughter)

People have faith in the world - but the whole world is just a soap bubble. People have faith in themselves - but they don't know who they are. People think that they have faith in God - but they have no idea of God. If you want to doubt, you have to doubt everything.

There are three types of faith: faith in yourself, faith in the world, and faith in God. You need to have faith in yourself -- without faith, you think, “I can't do this. This is not for me. I will never be liberated in this life”. You must have faith in the world. Without this, you can’t move an inch in the world. Banks give you loans having faith that you will pay it back. You deposit money in the bank having faith that it will be returned. If you doubt everything in the world, nothing will happen. The same is the case with faith in the Divine - have faith in the Divine and you will evolve. All these faiths are connected. You must have all three for each to be strong.

Bill : Atheists have faith in themselves and faith in the world, but not in God.

Sri Sri: They don't have complete faith in themselves. Lack of faith in God, in the world or in the self brings fear. Faith in the world cannot be constant because there are always changes.

Faith makes you full - faithful. If you have faith, you are full.

Rajesh : What is the difference between faith and confidence ?

Sri Sri : Confidence is the result. Faith is the beginning.

Faith in yourself brings freedom.

Faith in the world brings you peace of mind.

Faith in God evokes love in you.

You can be at peace by having faith in the world and without faith in God, but it is not complete peace. If you have love, there is automatically peace and freedom. People who are extremely disturbed should only have faith in God.

THOUGHT FOR THE DAY

Now, engage yourself in spiritual discipline, spiritual thoughts and spiritual company. Forget the past. At least from now on, seek to save yourself. Never yield to doubt or unsteadiness. That is a sign of ignorance. Have faith in any one Name and the Form indicated by that name. If you revere Shiva and hate Vishnu, the plus and the minus cancel out and the net result is zero. I will not tolerate the slightest hatred of any Name or Form. The wife has to revere the husband, but that does not mean that she has to hate his parents, brothers or sisters. You can never attain the Lord through hatred of one or more of His many Forms and Names. If you throw contempt at the God that another reveres, the contempt falls on your own God. Avoid factions, quarrelling, hating, scorning and fault-finding; they recoil on you. Remember everyone is a pilgrim towards the same goal; some travel by one road, some by another. (Divine Discourse, Oct 10, 1964)

God has no form but he is in all forms.
God has no eyes but he is watching everything all the time. God has no ears but he listens to you even before a thought arises. Even before you need to speak it out, he already listens to you.
God doesn’t have to speak in a language, he conveys the feeling directly.

What SRI SRI said

Drop your self image

Kashiap : "How do you make everyone happy?"

Guruji : "Become me."

Rama : "How do we become you?"

What stands between you and me is your self image. Your self image restricts you from being me. Self image whether good or bad causes misery.

When you think good about yourself in a very subtle manner you think bad about others. Then anger, jealousy, hatred - everything follows.

When you think bad about yourself you feel low and again you start getting angry and you hate everyone else. If you think good about yourself you are in trouble and when you think bad about yourself you are in greater trouble.

So drop your self image.

THOUGHT FOR THE DAY

When the qualities of an asura (demon) enter nara (man), he becomes Narakasura. In such a person, you find only bad qualities and evil feelings. Such a person does not join the company of the noble and does not make efforts to reach God, but makes friendship with only wicked people. Such a mentality is the consequence of evil deeds over a number of births. Ravana had acquired all types of knowledge like Rama. But unlike Rama, he joined bad company, entertained bad thoughts, and indulged in wicked deeds. Hence, people revere Rama and abhor Ravana. One is revered or ridiculed on the basis of one's conduct. Understand that none should lead a self-centred life. Wherever a good activity is taking place, wherever a prayer meeting is held, take part in them with enthusiasm. The scriptures guide us, “Give up bad company. Join the company of the noble. Perform meritorious deeds day and night.” (Divine Discourse, Nov 4, 2002)

-BABA

You need to judge your company. Your company can pull you up or pull you down. The company that drags you towards doubt, dejection, blame, complaints, anger, delusion, and desires is bad company. The company that pulls you up towards joy, enthusiasm, service, love, trust, and Knowledge is good company.

What SRI SRI said

In Satsang

16 October 2017 Bangalore Ashram

Today was a youth-special Q&A session.

Q: I want to study and play games, but I can't do both as I get very tired.

Gurudev: First of all you should believe you can do both and manage your time accordingly. Take the examples from people who have done six degrees at one time. There are many girls who learn classical dance at the same time they are doing well in studies too. It is all here in the mind. You can't play sports all the time. In the morning and evening hours you can play sports. In the night, you study. I know this is hard work but it is worth.

Q: I know that fast food is bad for me but I like to eat it.

Gurudev: Ok. Take it. But take it is less quantity. See that there is no MSG in it. There should be a limit in everything. Take something to clear the stomach like triphala, haritaki few times in a month.

Q: I go to the gym, do I need to do yoga also?

Gurudev: Gymming works on the muscular system. Yoga works on all the 7 systems, such as circulatory, digestive, muscular.

Q: Many gym instructors suggest that one should consume meat and high-protein food to build muscles. What should one do then?

Gurudev: I think they are a little outdated with their knowledge. It is just a myth that only meat can bring you protein. See elephants, horse, donkey, bull. They have so much power.

[Gurudev suddenly remembers that he has not fed the elephants today.] I was on the other side of the ashram so I didn't meet them. [He turns to someone and asks them to go and feed the elephants. Someone from the audience says they have been fed bananas. Then, Gurudev resumes talking to all of us.] Elephants are very intelligent and sensitive. There are many people who go to participate in Olympics and they are turning to vegetarianism. In fact people are turning vegan. But I would not suggest that for Indians. In India, you get A2 milk. A2 milk is same as mother's milk. They are taking Indian cows to Brazil to get A2 milk there.

Q: I cannot wake up early and meditate. Please tell me what I should do.

Gurudev: What if I give you advice and you are unable to do follow it? Whenever you wake up, you do meditation. When you do meditation, your energy level goes up. Aggression and suicide tendencies goes down. Did you see the article in Washington Post? [Gurudev has tweeted about it yesterday.] 100s and 1000s of people could get over their pain and depression by meditation and kriya. So you should find some time. Just like you follow dental hygience. However late you may be, don't you brush your teeth and have a bath before leaving for the day?

We have a program for American war veterans. They came to see me when I went there. There was a gentleman who locked himself in the basement for 10 years after returning from the Iraq war. He wouldn't spend time with his wife and kids. Once he did the kriya, he moved out of the basement. He started spending time with his wife. His wife cried and said you have given me my family back. 3000 people who came back from the war, they have all this trauma of war scenes. They cannot eat or sleep. Spirituality is the only way they could get back. Now their families are so happy. In just a matter of 4 to 5 days. In life you have to take care of your mind. This is mental hygiene.

Questions from Project Mind. Project Mind has made 13 videos to create awareness about different projects related to youth.

Q: Dealing with suicidal tendencies.

Gurudev: First of all know this when energy is low then depression happens. When energy is normal you feel normal. You have to raise the prana in you by meditation, kriya, breathing, exercise, and proper food. When energy is high, you feel enthusiastic. When it is higher still, you feel complete.

Q: Drugs...

Gurudev: People who go into drugs they want a higher experience. Their hunger is for something ethereal, something other worldly. Though drugs seems to gives little high temporarily it puts them into a deep state of depression. When people who were into drugs do the kriya, they wake up to the reality that you can get a higher experience without drugs. Spiritual path is the only way to get out of drugs.

Q: Advice for parents.

Gurudev: Parents should inculcate more faith in children. Just giving food and clothing is not it. You have to give them some knowledge about life. When we found that this was missing in education that's when we came up with Art of Living programs for youth. Every child has creativity in them and this finds an expression when you do kriya, yoga.

Q: Dealing with violence...

Gurudev: Whenever someone is into violence, in their mind there is a fermented question. You can do a simple experiment. Suppose your parents or brother asks a question. They ask, "Where are you going?" You don't answer it. When they ask that question for the fourth or fifth time, their voice raises. Anger will come. Similarly when you ask and people don't answer, don't you get angry? When they come in touch with knowledge, a miracle happens. The unanswered questions get answers or they turn into wonder. That is when violence drops and only love flows.

Once two bus fulls of Naxals drove from Anantapur, in former Andhra Pradesh. They came with all the bombs in the bus. They drove 16 to 17 hours to come here. They stayed only for 4 hours. In those 4 hours what transformation they went through, people could not believe it. They asked, "Is this true?"

The same people went back and gave it all way. They became farmers, business men, and went into social service.

Anger and violence catches on to another person. Suppose someone is angry in your house it catches on to you, right? Love is more powerful. Love has so much strength to heal the whole planet. It is only through love that you can make people realize that we are one family.

Q: About the Blue whale game...

Gurudev: We must ban such types of games because these are destructive tendencies. If you put destructive tendencies in their minds, there is nothing worse. When I was in Russia, many people came to me with the same problem. They told the child that if you don't do this, Satan will come for your own family. They create fear in this way. This is the worst thing that can happen. Satan does not exist.  When you are not facing the light, what do you see? Shadow. Shadow does not have an existence. If you turn your face towards the light, where is the shadow? All the terrorists think my God created this world, those who do not agree with my God they are defying God's law. My dear, God has many facets.

One who has created such variety of butterflies. In ashram there are 150 types of butterflies. In Diwali people put different types of lights but there is the same electricity flowing through all of it. In diversity there is unity. This is the ancient knowledge.

Q: How to get more children to do the youth programs?

Gurudev: You don't have to do anything. Just relax.  Everything is working out.

THOUGHT FOR THE DAY

Narakasura is present in everyone as lust, hate, greed and as fear and grief, which are against the very nature of humanity. Just as an umbrella with a silk cover cannot protect you from rain but the one with a waterproof cover can, so too in this storm-driven world incessantly flushed by torrential rain, an umbrella with desire-proof and anger-proof coating is very essential. There is great latent power inherent in everyone, and when that power is made explicit (vyakta), a human being deserves to be called individual (vyakthi). When the latent qualities from within you manifest, the demons will automatically be destroyed. Your reality is Atma; your quality is bliss (ananda). Krishna is the Super or Omni Self (Paramatma) and Satyabhama (Krishna’s consort) represents the individual self (jiva). On this auspicious day, Paramatma destroys the evil propensities with the active collaboration of the individual self! Remember, the individual self can defeat evil with the active grace of the Lord. (Sathya Sai Speaks, Vol 3, Dec 1963)

Anugraha means grace. Nothing is possible in life without anugraha. When you receive a lot without making efforts for it, then it is said that you are blessed with anugraha. Do you understand what I am saying?

Usually you work hard at your job and then receive your salary. So you say, ‘I have earned my money’. But if someone gives you a gift, you do not say, ‘I have earned these gifts’. Can something that is earned be called a gift? No. You receive gifts without any efforts. So when you receive a great gift or an award that you feel you did not deserve, then that is called anugraha. When we receive something that we are not deserving of, or which exceeds our capabilities, then that is what is called Grace. When we see that in our life, we have received far more than what we deserve or are capable of, then gratitude dawns in us. We become thankful, complaints disappear and abundance grows.

A person who is grateful never experiences lack of anything. Who experiences a lack in life? One who thinks that ‘I am so capable yet I got nothing’.

Being grateful means all your complaints in life simply disappear. When you have this feeling in your heart that you have always received more than what you asked for, or more than what you deserved, then deep gratitude arises in you. When there is gratitude, there will never be a lack of anything in life. For such a person, whatever he wishes for will keep getting fulfilled.

What SRI SRI said

Atheism

Atheism is when one does not believe either in values or in the abstract. When an atheist comes to the Guru, what happens? You start experiencing your own form and discover that you are indeed formless, hollow and empty. And this abstract non-form in you becomes more and more concrete!!! The guru makes the abstract more real and what you thought as solid appears to be more unreal. Sensitivity and subtlety dawns. Perception of love, not as an emotion, but as the substratum of existence becomes evident. The formless spirit shines through every form in creation and mystery of life deepens, shattering the atheism. Then the journey begins and it has four stages.

The first stage is Saarupya (to see the formless in the form) Ö Seeing God in all the forms. Often, one feels more comfortable to see God as formless rather than with a form, because with a form, one feels a distance, a duality, a fear of rejection and other limitations. In life all of our interactions are with the form, other than in deep sleep and in Samadhi. And, if you do not see God in the form, then the waking part of life remains devoid of the Divine. All those who accept God to be formless use symbols, and perhaps love the symbols more than God himself! If God comes and tells a Christian to leave the cross or a Muslim to drop the crescent, perhaps he may not do it! To begin with loving the formless is possible only through forms.

The second stage is Saamipya (closeness) Ö feeling absolutely close to the form you have chosen and reaching out to the formless. This leads to a sense of intimacy with the whole creation. In this stage, one overcomes the fear of rejection and other fears. But this is time and space bound.

The third stage is Saanidhya - feeling the presence of the Divine by which you transcend the limitations of time and space. Then the final stage Ö Saayujya Ö is when you are firmly entrenched with the Divine. It is then you realize you are one with the Divine. There is a total merging with the Beloved and all duality disappears.

THIS IS THAT AND THAT IS THIS.

Vinod Mathur: Does a believer also go through these four stages?

Sri Sri: Certainly, whether an atheist or believer, he goes through the four stages.

Eternity Process & Sahaj Samadhi Meditation

Our past impressions carry weight and determine how well we face the present moment and how well we can live life to its full capacity, free from fears and negative emotions.

To help us to overcome past impressions, our beloved Guruji  (Sri Sri Ravi Shankar ~ founder of the “Art of Living” Foundation) has designed the ETERNITY PROCESS, a process that enables us to view past experiences in this and past lives to erase some karmas in a space surrounded by his love and grace. We emerge having lived through our past impressions, more alive to the present moment and to open to celebrating life. The process has given deep healing experiences to many people.

THOUGHT FOR THE DAY

Do not be carried away by others’ opinions – either good or bad. Develop your own line of thinking, based on your conscience. Develop self confidence. Where there is self-confidence, there will be self-satisfaction. Where there is self-satisfaction, there will be self-sacrifice. And through self-sacrifice comes self-realisation. Self-confidence is the foundation for the building; it remains below the surface of the earth. Self-satisfaction represents the walls, self-sacrifice is the roof, and the life in this house is self-realisation. Without the foundation of self-confidence, self-realisation cannot be achieved. Therefore, build up your self-confidence slowly. In this process, start early, drive slowly and reach your goal of self-realisation safely. First and foremost, develop love. It is easier to cultivate love than all other qualities. There is nothing in this world which cannot be achieved with love. [Divine Discourse, Nov 4, 2002]

-BABA

There is no joy in life without love. What is life without love? It is nothing. Even a small insect does not wish to live a life without love. Everyone wants love – the birds, trees and animals. The Brahman or God too wants love. So there can be no life without love, yet we see that all difficulties arise because of love. So how do we resolve this contradiction? It is knowledge that can help solve this riddle, this contradiction. When you are in knowledge, then you are able to keep love as love only and not let it turn into attachment, greed, or jealousy, etc. Knowledge helps to preserve love from getting distorted. Knowledge keeps the mind calm and composed.

Suppose you feel a sense of jealousy, how can knowledge bring you out of it? When you remember that life is so temporary, and the person you are jealous of will die one day and so will you – then knowing this, your mind becomes calm and composed. Just remembering that everything is temporary and short lived will bring you out of it.
You can also come out of it by surrendering the feeling of jealousy and attachment to the Divine. So, if you are very attached to your son, just offer this attachment to the Divine, thinking that even your son belongs to God. Pray to God saying, “Oh Lord, I surrender this attachment to you”.
When we surrender, then we are freed of that which causes us pain and misery, and we once again experience that joy and peace in life. And when we are joyful, then everyone wants to be with us. Otherwise, if a wife sits with a long face all day, then the moment the husband returns home and sees her face, he feels like running away! (Laughter) Then he comes home, quickly changes his clothes and runs off to some other place. If the lady of the house is happy, and does not go on complaining, then no matter how the day may have been, the husband feels like coming home thinking of the joy and peace he will feel at home.

One often wants a life partner in order to fill each other’s life with love. But what do people end up doing instead? They fill each other’s life with misery. They make each other’s life difficult. This should not happen. All of you should take this sankalpa today – that whether it be your friends, family members, relatives, husband or wife, whoever comes to you should leave with more joy and peace. You will not give them a chance to complain. You will endure and go through whatever karma you have to bear, but you will make their life happier.

What SRI SRI said

Religion and politics

The role of religion is to make one righteous and loving And politics means caring for people and their welfare. When religion and politics don't coexist then you have corrupt politicians and pseudo-religious leaders. A religious man who is righteous and loving will definitely care for the welfare of the whole population and hence becomes a true politician. And a true politician can only be righteous and loving. He cannot be anything but religious. All the Avatars and prophets have been caring for people and so were in politics. You can find many examples to this effect.

When religions restrict the freedom to worship and restrict modes of worship they become unsuitable for creating a harmonious society. When religion becomes all encompassing and gives full freedom to pray and worship in any manner -- that religion will bring righteousness and peace in people and will be suitable for any society. People think politics and religion have to be kept separate because many religions did not give freedom to worship and did not care for all people equally. History has shown that religion has created conflict. But irreligious societies (e.g. communism) have created chaos and corruption.

Today both religion and politics need reform. Religion has to become broader and more spiritual to allow freedom of worship and broader to encompass all the wisdom in the world. And politicians have to become more righteous and spiritual.

THOUGHT FOR THE DAY

The flower of penance (Tapas pushpam) is very dear to God. Penance does not require you to give up your wife and children, go to a forest, and put your head up and feet down - that is not tapas! To practice real tapas, we should abandon bad thoughts from our minds as soon as they occur! The co-ordination of thought, word and deed is tapas. Whatever thoughts sprout in your mind, to utter them as words and to put them in practice as your work is true tapas. It is in this context that scriptures reveal, “Manas Ekam, Vachas Ekam, Karmanyekam Mahatmanam - the person who can coordinate their thoughts with their words and their words with their deeds is indeed a great soul (Mahatma). Give up bad thoughts from your mind – that is sacrifice! That sacrifice will become yoga (spiritual path). Remember, giving up one's property and one's wife and going to the forest is not yoga! (Divine Discourse, May 12, 1981)

Greed is when you disrespect the laws. You want to make money anyhow, and so you drop the ethics and go for profit, that is called greed. Ambition is within the permit of ethics. You can be ambitious but greed takes you away from ethics. Simple thing what I would say is: clarity in mind, purity in heart, sincerity in action. That has been my guiding principle. It does not stress you out, doesn’t put a load on you and success is for sure.

What SRI SRI said

Loyalty

Loyalty is the way in which a mature and integrated mind behaves. Loyalty indicates undivided wholeness of consciousness and shows richness of the mind. When the mind is not integrated it is feverish, disloyal and opportunistic. Disloyalty comes out of opportunism. Opportunism is short-sightedness of one's destiny. Integrity or wholeness is essential to be healthy. A divided mind will gradually lead to schizophrenia and other physical and mental disorders. Loyalty is a real strength and will have the support of nature in the long run.

Fear and ambitions are impediments to loyalty. Loyalty is needed both in the material and spiritual plane. Either to destroy, create or maintain any institution, group or society, loyalty is essential.

Loyalty means believing in the continuity of commitment. Honouring commitment is loyalty. It takes you beyond the duality of craving and aversion. Responsibility, dedication, commitment are the limbs of loyalty.

A loyal mind is a 'yes'-mind. The purpose of asking questions is to get an answer. The purpose of all answers is to create a ...'yes'.... 'Yes' is an acknowledgement of knowledge. The 'yes'-mind is a quiet, holistic and joyful mind. The 'no'-mind is a agitated, doubting and miserable mind. Loyalty begins with a 'yes'-mind and starts to perish with a 'no'-mind.
