THOUGHT FOR THE DAY |
You see death snatching away persons from all around you, but you do not train yourself to meet it calmly, bravely, and gladly when it comes to you. Majority of people get glimpses of discrimination and detachment off and on, but they soon forget the call, ignore it or cover it up with excesses or excuses. One step forward and one step back — the journey does not take them far. Even if some do take up spiritual practices, steadiness is absent. Like a ball of thread that slips out of the hand onto the floor, and comes off loose because the grasp is not firm, practices fade away. Only steady effort will bring success here, as in every other case. How can you expect quick success in the control of the mind? It is very difficult to overcome its vagaries, for it is many-faced and very adamant. Steady perseverance alone will tame your mind, and it is only through a tamed mind that you can experience God. (Divine Discourse, Apr 23, 1961) |
-BABA |
How can we control the mind?
Sri Sri Ravi Shankar: Through the breath. If you can control your breath then know that you can control your mind. Do pranayama and once you keep doing pranayama you will start gaining control on your mind. You cannot control the mind directly, it is not possible. When you like something then the mind is there fully.
Suppose you like a movie, that 2-3 hours you are totally focused. Your focus stays on the television or the screen because you like something. Mind gets focused when there is liking towards something. When you don’t like something and still you have to focus, then take the help of the breath. Breath can help the mind focus.
If you love something you don’t need to focus, it is already there. Love brings focus along with it. Greed and fear can also help you focus. If none of these three things work then the fourth one I would say is dispassion. Dispassion can bring focus.

What SRI SRI said
11/03/2017 Bangalore, India
“The word Sikh means a student (shishya) – one is who is always seeking to evolve.

There was a great Saint called Guru Nanak Dev in India more than 500 years back. He was from Punjab. He traveled up to Baghdad, spreading the message of spirituality, of oneness with God, and the importance of devotion. Today, the Sikh community celebrates his birthday and it is a very important day for them. Today is also Kartika Purnima (referring to the full moon day in the Hindu calendar month of Kartika), Dev Diwali, and the day when the propounder of the Jain religion, Lord Mahavira, received enlightenment.
Sikhism had ten Gurus, and Guru Nanak Dev was the first Guru (the founder of Sikhism). The stories of all the ten Gurus of the Sikh tradition are heartwarming and uplifting – they are of sacrifice. The Gurus sacrificed everything they had for the sake of the protection of the good, innocent, and righteous. People were also given the cream of knowledge by the Gurus in simple words.
What was Guru Nanak Dev’s message?
Guru Nanak Dev spoke about the nectar of devotion – Bhakti Rasa. Guru Nanak Dev was a devotee totally immersed in Bhakti Yoga (referring to Devotion as one of the limbs of Yoga, and the path to attain the Divine), while Guru Gobind Singh was a Karma Yogi (one who believes in doing one’s duty or Karma as the path to liberation). So, you see a change or a shift from devotion to action. When people were stuck in the outward worldly affairs, Guru Nanak Dev inspired them to go inwards – that was his message.
He said, “Do not get so stuck in worldly affairs that you forget the name of God. Keep chanting the name of God.”
A beautiful story expounding the devotion of Guru Nanak Dev
Many a times, Guru Nanak Dev’s father would ask him to go and sell some vegetables in the market. When selling vegetables, as he would start counting, he would get stuck at the number 13 (pronounced as tera in Hindi), which also means yours. Hearing the word tera, he would get immersed in thoughts of the Divine. So, even while doing work, his mind was never in the work – it was always on the Divine. Guru Nanak Dev would say, “I am yours, I am yours, I am yours.”
Guru Nanak’s life was filled with pure love, wisdom, and valor.
Japji Sahib—the foremost prayer in Sikhism—was composed by Guru Nanak Dev
There is a beautiful prayer in the Guru Granth Sahib, which says, “Ek Onkar (God is One), Satnam (His name is True), Karta-Purakh (He is the Creator), Nirbhau (He is without fear), Nirvair (He is inimical to none), Akal-murat (He never dies), Ajuni Saibhang (He is beyond birth and death), Gurprasaad (He is realized by the kindness of the True Guru), Jap (Repeat his name), Aad Sach (He is True, even before anything was created), Jugaad Sach (He has ever been True), Hai Bhi Sach (He is True now), Nanak Hose Bhi Sach (He will be True in the future).”
The whole world is born from one Omkaar (one Divinity). Everything around us is composed of the vibrations of this one Omkaar alone. And you can know Omonly by the grace of the Guru. It is there everywhere, but it can only be understood through the Guru.
Om is the eternal sound that exists in the depth of one’s consciousness. If you go to the ocean and listen carefully to the waves, you will find the same sound – Om. If you go on top of a mountain and listen to the wind blowing, you will hear the sound Om. Before this birth, we were all in Om. After this birth, after we all die, we will merge into that cosmic sound Om. Even now, in the depth of creation, that sound still resonates. Whether Buddhism, Jainism, Sikhism, Hinduism, Taoism, or Shintoism – in all these religions, Omkar (Om chanting) is given much prominence.
Draw inspiration from Guru Nanak Dev's message
Today, on Guru Nanak Dev’s birthday, let us remind ourselves not to let the mind slip into Maya – into this ever-changing relative world. Let us be happy, make others happy, pray, serve, and act to protect dharma.
How to relieve stress with Sudarshan Kriya?
Nature is replete with various rhythms and cycles – day follows night, night follows day, seasons come & go. Similarly, there are biological rhythms in our body, mind and emotions. When these rhythms are in sync, we have a sense of harmony and well being. When stress or illness upsets the rhythm, we experience discomfort and discontent and feel upset and unhappy.
“We need to do a cleansing process within ourselves. In sleep we get rid of fatigue, but the deeper stresses remain in our body. Sudarshan Kriya cleanses the system from the inside. The breath has a great secret to offer”

Eternity Process & Sahaj Samadhi Meditation
Our past impressions carry weight and determine how well we face the present moment and how well we can live life to its full capacity, free from fears and negative emotions.
To help us to overcome past impressions, our beloved Guruji (Sri Sri Ravi Shankar ~ founder of the “Art of Living” Foundation) has designed the ETERNITY PROCESS, a process that enables us to view past experiences in this and past lives to erase some karmas in a space surrounded by his love and grace. We emerge having lived through our past impressions, more alive to the present moment and to open to celebrating life. The process has given deep healing experiences to many people.

THOUGHT FOR THE DAY |
Do not get involved in the mesh of ‘I and mine’. As soon as your ego is suppressed, that very moment two consequences immediately will follow: freedom from grief and acquisition of joy! To achieve this great consummation, you must take one step after another persistently. Good deeds like ritual worship, repetition of holy names, meditation, observance of vows, etc., are the essential 'steps'! Good thoughts like prayer for greater discrimination, more chance to serve others, etc. will help you immensely! Slowly and steadily cleanse your mind, sharpen the intellect, purify the senses, and you will win grace. Treat the old and the sick that are amidst you with some special care. Those of you who are young and sturdy, comfort them and give them the chances they deserve. Observe the disciplinary rules that are prescribed for your sake and be benefited! You have come to the Lord, prompted by Love (prema); cultivate it assiduously and live in that love. (Divine Discourse, Feb 18, 1966) |

What SRI SRI said
In Satsang
1st November 2017 at the Art of Living International Center in Bangalore:

Greetings to all the states, whoever is celebrating. Every excuse to celebrate is very good. Every province in India has it's unique culture, unique identity. They have their unique food & music and folk songs. And it is necessary that they all maintain and nurture this and don't lose it.
These days children are forgetting to count in their mother tongue. I am encouraging kids to learn their mother tongue and not lose it.
You know, as many languages as you learn is good for you. At least whatever is your mother tongue, whatever state (province) you are in, whichever language they are using, you must learn in that language and do not miss the opportunity to learn those languages. Especially counting and the rhymes. We don't need the whole world singing only 'Twinkle twinkle little star’ or 'Ba ba black sheep, have you any wool?’ You don't need. There are so many local songs, local languages, and there are couplets and beautiful songs, with such deep philosophy in it. Unfortunately, people are forgetting all that.
There are such beautiful verses in almost every province of India. And the same is true in every part of the world. Like a kid in Germany learns Mathematics in German language and not in English, because that's not his mother tongue. A kid in Italy, they learn the numbers in Italian. Same with Spanish. But only here in India, we forget the local language in which we need to count and this affects the brain also. Somewhere that ability to do Mathematics in local language goes down.
When we were kids, our whole Mathematics, 1st to 4th standard, was all in the local language. And slowly we are just giving that away, we don't think that it is fashionable for our kids to speak in our local language. And this is creating a big rift between the rural and urban youths. The rural people feels such low self-esteem because they learnt everything in their local language and the urban youth feel that they are superior because they learnt everything in English. So this thing should change.
Our kids should learn their mother tongue, start respecting and learn all these beautiful, philosophically pregnant verses that are in the folk songs. Otherwise we will be losing something very precious.
In Bengal, such beautiful Bengali songs are there. There are these bowl singers in Bengali, and these folk songs, when these people come with a bowl and sing, these songs are so beautiful. Rabindranath Tagore got inspiration from these bowl music, who are folk musicians. Similarly Andhra Pradesh has got this 'janpad sahitya’, folk songs, Chattisgarh has it's folk dances, Kerala has it's own beautiful music, food, culture, everything.
You know when I was in college in 70’s, I went to Kerala. At that time Kerala had only Kerala food, they only had red rice. They never know the white rice which is there now, pulao, etc. They only had boiled rice & red rice. Only Kerala food was available and everybody would eat that traditional Kerala food which was very healthy. But today everywhere you will find burgers and sandwich, etc.
And those days slowly we had lost the Panchakarma and all Ayurveda. And it is then the effort of few enlightened people, intelligent people who brought the Panchakarma, Ayurveda, back to surface.
So, every province has it's unique food, unique language, culture, music and dance, these should be preserved. And we should feel proud about whatever we have in our province. That is the diversity and we must encourage this diversity, and ‘unity in diversity’ is what a good, evolved society will always look for.
I would say the same with the aboriginal cultures of the world. You know, Canada has it's own culture, it's aboriginals, the tribal people, the first nation people of Canada, they have very unique culture. And same in U.S. too, the Indian reserves there, they have their own culture. Of course, they lost their languages, but at least they have something from their culture still remaining. Earlier they had their own language, they have lost it, and South America, they still have some of those customs, some of those languages they have.
I feel this is all world heritage. We must maintain and encourage people in their faith, in their cultures and in their practices.
Q. Gurudev, can you please explain the symbolism of the story of Lord Shiva drinking the poison coming out of the churning of the ocean?
Sri Sri: Yes, you know when the good forces and the negative forces they undertake some churning work, and what comes out first is negativity, is poison. And nobody is able to contain that. But the transcendental being, the most auspicious, benevolent consciousness, the beauty of the consciousness can just dissolve that, can absorb the poison and give only the best to the world back.
Q. When I do my sadhna everyday, so after that some prayer comes in my mind. The elders in the family pray to God. Is it important to do it separately? What is the importance of this? What should be our prayer on a daily basis which gives right direction to our lives? Thank you!
Sri Sri: See, people who meditate, they do not get so much interest in actions. While sitting in meditation, we get everything so what is the need to offer flowers, light incense sticks. But yet I will say by doing these things to some extent at home, an atmosphere gets established. Everyday, light a lamp. These days we have electricity, so what is the need! No. By lighting a lamp, an environment gets established. Similarly if you do some fire ceremonies or during festivals, everyone in the family could gather and perform aarti. See all this is not for pleasing God but rather to bring all the minds in the society together, we do it for establishing an environment. Attaining God is something personal but we do these rituals to bring people together. Second thing, what to pray? Prayer happens naturally only. Prayer is that only which is needed. Prayer happens on two occasions. One, when you feel the need, then prayer happens or when you are grateful. We remember what we have achieved, then out of gratitude, we pray. So this happens naturally only. So prayer should happen. And beyond this if you want to say something, what to ask from God I am not able to understand. Then it is said, chant Gayatri Mantra. May this mind get absorbed into it. Our life works on our intellect only. Give the inspiration to this intellect and you are the inspiration to this intellect. This is what it is, “Dhiyoyana Prochodaya”. May you fill all our minds with good thoughts. There cannot be a better prayer than this. This is what Gayatri Mantra is about. In you, may our intellect get absorbed and whatever sins we have done, may they get washed off and give good thoughts into this intellect. Give inspiration to this intellect.

THOUGHT FOR THE DAY |
You must become your own tutor. Train yourself by using the spark of wisdom that has been implanted in you. Once you try with all your might, the Lord’s Grace will be there to help you forward. The first step in spiritual discipline is to cleanse your speech. Talk sweetly without anger. Do not boast of your scholarship or attainments. Be humble and eager to serve. Conserve speech and practice silence. It will save you from squabbles, idle thoughts and factions. Practice the attitude of joy when others are joyful and of grief when others around you are sad. Let your heart move in empathy. But the joy and grief have to be translated into service; they should not be mere emotions. When the sun rises, not all lotuses in the lake bloom; only the grown buds open their petals. Others await their time. It’s the same with people. Differences exist because of unripeness, but remember, all fruits will ripen and fall someday. Every being reaches its goal, however slow they walk or circuitous their road is! (Divine Discourse, Apr 23, 1961) |

Friends make fun of you being in spirituality? Yes, you smile at that and say, 'What a great thing you are missing you don’t know'. Tell them,'Anyways you are going to follow this; it is only a matter of time', you tell them. 'In five years you will come for this knowledge. And we are pioneers you know', tell them,' I am a pioneer in everything, we first taste and whatever we leave behind you take it'. If anyone makes fun of you, you keep smiling, don’t lose your smile. Tell them wait, wait, it is only a matter of years; you will be doing the same thing. Tell them they are used to eating the leftovers; tell them, 'I am enjoying the good meal now'.

What SRI SRI said
In Satsang
31st October 2017 at the Art of Living International Center in Bangalore:
Q. Gurudev, I don’t want craving yet it comes up in me. What is it in me that craves and what is it that resists the craving?
Sri Sri: It a longing for higher joy, a pleasure that creates craving. And what resists craving is an experience that every craving has led you into a miserable state. So misery creates a break or an aversion, resistance. You have experienced misery because of that, because of craving in the past. Craving is because you are looking for joy, which is natural for a spirit to look for the joy, look for ultimate joy, unless and until we realize we are the ultimate joy, we’ll keep looking for it. It looks where it is not.
You have heard Mulla Naseeruddin’s story, no. Mulla was searching for something in the street. One of his friends came and asked ‘Mulla, what are you searching? Let me help.’ Mulla said ‘I lost my key.’ So they searched and searched and searched. And then he asked ‘Mulla where did you lose the key, you have any idea?’ Mulla said ‘I lost it in the basement of the house’. His friend asked ‘But why are you looking ouside?’ Mulla said ‘Because light is here.’
So similarly, you are searching for thing where it is not. That is what is craving all about.
Q. Gurudev, in the Kathopanishad, it is said that the self can be attained not by studying the scriptures, nor through the intellect but by those whom the self chooses. Kindly expain this Gurudev.
Sri Sri: This is simply to say that it all comes to you through grace. That’s all. The self, the big self chooses. You know there is a saying, God willing or God’s grace bestowed us. So whatever you have achieved which is very significant, which is more than what you could do, that which you can get by your own effort, is very small. But what you could get which is beyond your capacity, that is worth having and that comes not by your doing but by grace. This is what the whole thing meant. I am not capable of this but still I got this. I am not qualified but still I got. So this where you feel very grateful. ‘l have been bestowed with things which I am not worthy of it.’ This is the language of the bhakta or devotee. Devotee never says, ‘Oh I earned it. This is my right.’ You know, so when you think it is your right, you are getting what you got because of your right, there is no gratefulness. Gratefulness is there when you feel that you have not got this by your effort but it has been bestowed on you by grace. As bestowed to you as a gift and that brings the gratefulness in you. So, you know. That’s the language of the devotee. So its all through grace. ‘I am nothing, I am nobody, I don’t deserve this but still I have got.’ Just that little shift. You think you deserve and you get it, that is you are ascertaining your ego. When you say, I don’t deserve it, still I have got it, that is gratefulness. And if you think I don’t deserve this I got this bad treatment, that is sadness. Any misery that comes to you and you think that ‘I do not deserve this, why I got this, it is sadness. I did so much good, I’ve been blamed, you, people don’t understand me, I don’t deserve this sort of treatment,’ when you say these things, that means you are opening a path to misery.
You know, no misery can come to you if it is not your karma. There is a saying, ‘Kashtasya, sukhasya, nakopi daata”; there is no giver of happiness or misery to you. Both. Your misery comes to you not because God wants to punish you or test you. Misery comes because of karma. And your happiness comes to you because of a gift from god. It is from grace. Anugraha. Blessings, so from blessings you get all good things in life and anything bad, that is happening to us, is coming to us because of our karma, and we are going to finish that. We have to finish that karma. Prarabdh, it has come. This is the right attitude, right perspective also.
We think the other way around, if you are happy, all the blessings that you get, you think you deserve it so you did it, you got it and any misery comes to you, you feel, you don’t deserve it. Why this one, this is ignorance, you know, why this trouble to me? God is unfair, he is punishing me.’ Do you see this subtle difference, yes. So this knowledge will keep you on track. People question when they are miserable, ‘why this trouble to me, why this misery to me. Why is God unfair.’ Instead of looking at this way, look it as, ‘it was my karma, so I got it.’
Do you see what I am saying? The philosophy of karma is stupendous, its unfathomable, and it is the most scientific and useful thing in life. It saves your mind. It uplifts your mind. If you understand the theory of karma, even a little bit, it uplifts your spirit does not let it dampen by things happening around you.

THOUGHT FOR THE DAY |
For Myself I can say, I shower more blessings on those who decry or defame Me. For, those who spread falsehoods about Me derive joy therefrom; I am happy that I am the cause for their exultation and joy! You too must accept this line of argument and be very happy when someone derives joy by defaming you. Do not respond by defaming that person; then, the chain of hatred will bind both and drag both of you down. Life will become a tragedy. Conquer anger by means of fortitude; conquer hatred by love. Do not feed anger with retaliation; do not feed hatred with fury. Forget and forgive all that has happened amongst you until this very moment; start a new chapter of love and brotherhood from now on. Goodness is Godliness. Never talk ill of others; spend your time in showering love, and in mutual help. Love, Love, Love, first Love.. Love as long as life lasts. (Divine Discourse, Apr 28, 1975) |
-BABA |
The very joy of giving love is so much that it does not matter who is at the receiving end. When this space comes into your being, then you will go on giving love to everybody and everything - not only human beings but to animals, to trees, to distant stars. Love can be transferred to the farthest star by just your loving look, to a tree just by your touch. It can be conveyed in absolute silence, without a single word.
Your love for the whole humanity, that’s what you should be concerned about. Love for the planets, love for the animals; animal rights (animals do have a right to exist). We have no right to take their life away. You worry about all these things.
Look into the eyes of the goats, or even the chicken, cows, dogs. Look into their eyes. This entire creation is filled with love, and how people can slaughter them to fill their little tummy. It is not even healthy. This is unfortunate.

10 Steps to Improve Communication Skills
11/07/2017 Bangalore, India

With the right communication skills, we can turn any negative situation into a positive one. In this artile, Gurudev Sri Sri Ravi Shankar shares 10 steps one can take to develop effective communication at work and in personal relationships.
1
The first point to improving communication is listening. Listening is an important factor for better communication
2
Understand where the other is coming from, what language they speak
3
Make them aware that you’re speaking the same language, and then communicate what you want to communicate
4
Don’t give your opinions when they’re not asked for. Be a little mysterious! People should want to ask you a question to get to know you. Till then, don’t open your mouth. Unnecessary, don’t keep saying – I like this, I don’t like this – my god, who asked you? If most of your conversations go like that, people will not want to communicate with you
5
If someone wants to come and share something with you, be a good listener. While they are speaking, don’t counter them saying, “I too had that experience”, and start your stories. They should not feel – oh my god, I wanted to share and now he is talking about himself.
A speaker is coming to you, making you a listener; instead you make them a listener, this is bad communication. A speaker has a deep desire to say something to you, let them say it and then you respond
6
Make the person with whom you want to communicate feel comfortable with you. You don’t need to make an extra effort – if you are a good listener and you are fully present in the moment, it’s done!
7
Being a little hollow and empty helps a lot! Many of you may have experienced this. When you’re a little hollow and empty, you communicate better, you have more patience, and you understand the other person better
8
Now suppose someone goes on and on and on, and you have no time; you want to cut them off and make them listen to what you want to say – you have to do it very skillfully. With a sense of belongingness you can say, “Eh, come on, I know about it, let’s talk about…” To change the topic, you need skill
9
When communicating, it is important to connect on an emotional level, on the level of your heart – then communicating is easy. But if you’re connecting only through the head, then even when you say nice things, it may appear hurtful or derogatory. So, you need to be a little playful, skillful, with a sense of belongingness, and a sense of caring in every word you communicate. The other person should feel the care
10
Avoid artificially showing care for others. Don’t try to be nice to people. Know that you have this quality (of care and belongingness) in you. Knowing that, you simply have to bring it into expression

THOUGHT FOR THE DAY |
There is no use counting seconds and minutes while doing namasankirtan (act of singing God’s name) thinking, ‘I have done namasankirtan for so many minutes and so many seconds’. Meera sincerely prayed to Lord Krishna, “Swami, I delved deep into the ocean and could get the pearl of Your divine name. Let not this valuable pearl slip from my hand and drop back into the ocean. Having been born in this world, let me sing the glory of the divine name constantly and sanctify my life!” Some people participating in bhajan say, “Today I am not well. I have a sore throat due to cough and cold. I am not able to sing.” True, you may be suffering from cold and cough. But, you can sing within yourself, surely. Do it. That will give you sufficient strength. The divine name is very sacred. (Divine Discourse, Nov 13, 2007) |

You know, knowledge and logic, and music are formed in two different parts of our brain and they’re both essential. That brings a balance in the system. Music is essential.

Explore your potential - A Transcript of Gurudev's Message on 7th November 2017 at Chitkara University
11/06/2017 Punjab, India

Do you know the meaning of the word Jayakara?
Where there is victory, the joyous cry or sound one makes for victory is called Jayakara. In the same way, Chitkara means the place where one’s spirit awakens and is uplifted. Chitta also means spirit in Hindi. There are diverse meanings of the word Chitta.
Once I was conducting an event in a large stadium in Pune, similar to the event today. The event went on for one whole week. Initially my plan was to return after visiting Solan in Himachal Pradesh. But then quite suddenly my travel plans changed and it got decided that we would also be visiting Chandigarh before returning back. In the same way, the Pune event too was decided in a very short span of time – the plan was made in roughly 10 days. After the program ended, one of the youth volunteers from the event told me, “Gurudev, the entire event happened so smoothly. There were no troubles or obstacles of any kind”. Hearing this I thought, is it a youth or an old person who is driving the car? You know, ayouth is one who is always ready to take on challenges as they come. If one expects or waits for everything to be smooth and hassle-free, then that person is not a youth. When the person heard what I said, he was quite astonished. I explained that it is in old age that one expects everything to be smooth and free from difficulty. If one has to go from here to Delhi, one can very easily catch a bus or a train to travel. But when someone makes the same trip an adventure, then that person is a Youth.
What do you think is the sign of being a youth?
1. Being ready to take on challenges
2. Undying enthusiasm! When you light a candle and turn it upside down, the flame still burns upwards. That is how our life should also be – regardless of which direction life goes, the spirit should always move upwards. One who is able to maintain his sense of enthusiasm regardless of the situation in life is a youth in the true sense. Enthusiasm is a sign of youth.
What do you think are the challenges that come to you in life?
One of them is when you think, “Oh, how will my life be in the future? Will I get a job? Will I be able to make it as an entrepreneur? Will my business thrive?”
There is some kind of insecurity in your mind about yourself. Or you worry by thinking, “Oh, will I pass my exams? What marks will I score? Will I get a seat while applying to colleges for higher studies?” These kinds of insecurities suppress your potential. This is where you need a firm foundation, or an anchor to which you can place all your faith in; which makes you believe that you can overcome and progress forward.
The story of Shivaji Maharaj and his Guru
I want to share a story of Shivaji Maharaj with you. After a long battle, Shivaji Maharaj grew very tired, and felt that he could not continue fighting any further. He grew dejected and began to feel very insecure. You know, whenever one feels insecure, the Guru appears in life to take care. Samarth Ramdas Maharaj was Shivaji’s Guru. So, Samarth Ramdas Ji came to the Shivaji’s court to meet him. He said to Shivaji, “My dear, I have come to ask something from you”.
It is said that, if your Guru asks you for your head, know that even that is too little a price he is asking from you.
Shivaji replied, “Gurudev, my entire life is yours. I am ready to lay my head at your feet. Please ask what you seek and it is yours.”
Samarth Ramdasji said, “I want your kingdom.”
Without thinking for even a second, Shivaji Maharaj took off his royal turban, and sword and surrendered them at the feet of his Guru. He said, “Gurudev, you have freed me so totally today from all my worries and concerns. You have taken away such a heavy burden, for which I am grateful. I bow to you again and again.”
Saying this, Shivaji rose and turned to walk away. At that moment, Samarth Ramdasji stopped him and said, “My dear, stop! Indeed from this day on I am the King of the Kingdom. Now, you shall fight for me as my trusted warrior to protect my kingdom. Now wear this crown again for namesake, take up your sword and fight your enemies bravely without any concerns.”
It is said, since that day, Shivaji Maharaj never experienced any sense of insecurity ever again. He never lost courage and kept on moving forward in his activities and conquests. He became invincible in battle.
There is a Supreme power taking care of you at all times
So from this story, you should know that there is a Supreme power which is with you, and is taking care of you at all times. We may call that power as Waheguru, Lord Shiva, Lord Hanuman, or as the all-encompassing syllable Om. Just knowing this gives you great inner strength.
Even the tenth Guru of the Sikh tradition said, “Chant the name of the Divine; it brings you great strength of mind and equanimity in life”.
A strong and steady mind can pull through even if the body is weak. But if the mind is weak and entangled in negativity, then it cannot move even a physically strong body forward. That is why it is so vital to have a strong and steady mind. Remember to keep insecurities from overwhelming the mind.
Do you fear humiliation?
Now, you may have a good business which your parents would have set up over the years, and after your studies, you may plan to take up the family business forward. In such case you may not have any insecurity about your future. But even then, do you know what you may fear? You may succumb to fearing humiliation. Many of us have this feeling that no one should criticize or insult us. How many of us feel this way? Raise your hands. I tell you, this is the biggest stumbling block in your path to progress. Many great people are troubled with this fear of humiliation.
A person could be the Prime Minister of a country, or a Chief Minister, or a Mayor of a city. But when there is a constant fear of humiliation in the mind, then your spirit cannot blossom totally from within as long as you are stuck with this fear.
In life, we run away from every possible where we fear being humiliated. This fear prevents you from blossoming from within, from being so natural. I tell you, just stand tall with your head held high and have this firm belief, “I do not fear criticism and insult, regardless of who may do so”. That’s it. When you challenge humiliation itself and stand tall before it, then no one can diminish your self-confidence and your talents. No one can make you unhappy in the world then.
You should have this approach in life, “At most, what will the other person call me? That I am a fool? Let them do so freely, I will not fear that”. We need to strive to overcome this fear of humiliation. Do you all agree to this? (Many in the audience raise hands in support).
Identify your goals in life and work towards it
People who remain unfazed by fears and problems in life, and who walk ahead firmly with a goal in mind, surely attain success. I would suggest that you also keep a certain goal in your mind. In fact, you should have two goals in life – one can be a personal goal for yourself, and one for the country.
You should reflect and say – I want so-and-so change to happen in society or in the nation. In this way, you should have two goals in life. If you remain stuck only to your personal goals, then you cannot grow, you remain small. And people who are only committed to goals for the society and forget their own personal goals; that is also not going to work. In both cases you cannot be successful. You need to have a balance and focus on both, just like how you can ride a bicycle.
Similarly, you need to bring a balance in your life – between social activity, cultural activity, and professional or educational excellence. You need to take both these aspects together, otherwise you will not find contentment in life, and will remain unhappy and restless.
Just relax and be happy
Alright, I want to ask one more thing from you all – Are you all naughty? (Many in the audience shout “Yes!” as Gurudev asks). Good, you better be naughty I tell you. Otherwise you will lose your qualification to be called as a Youth. If you are not being mischievous in life, I tell you, you have certainly grown old in life.
My dear, what is the use of getting so troubled with small trivial issues in life? Just relax and be happy. This is the time to be happy and playful. Laugh and make others laugh, neither get entangled nor entangle others in life. That’s it!

THOUGHT FOR THE DAY |
Truth is God, Faith is God, Love is God; Live in Love. If only you cultivate these three, you can achieve anything. You may encounter any number of losses and difficulties in life. You may undergo a lot of suffering. But, you should never give up truth, faith and love. Loss, suffering and difficulties are like the waves in the ocean of life. They just come and go. But, the water in the ocean remains permanently. Hence, develop the faith of ‘water’, i.e., Divinity. Your thoughts are like passing clouds. Hence keep your faith firmly fixed on God. If you develop love and faith towards God, there is nothing in the world that you cannot achieve. By faith and love, you can even change the earth into sky and the sky into earth. The power of divine name is unparalleled. People often take it lightly. That is a mistake. (Divine Discourse, Nov 13, 2007) |

The Arrow of Faith
It is only through merit that you can have faith. When you lack faith, happiness is neither in the inner nor the outer world. Happiness springs forth from faith. Happiness is forgetting the body consciousness. Pain or sorrow is holding on to the body consciousness. Whenever you are happy, you don't feel the body and when you are miserable, you have aches and pains.
Question: Then why in meditation is the attention taken to various parts of the body?
Sri Sri: For an arrow to go forward, you have to pull it back. In the same way when you take the attention to the various parts of the body, it frees you from body consciousness.

What SRI SRI said
What is Karma?
11/10/2017 Bangalore, India

What is Karma?
There are billions and billions of living creatures and so many kinds of feelings arise within each of them. All these feelings propel or cause some action. That feeling is called Karma, and the (resultant) action is also called Karma.
Sukshma Karma and Sthula Karma
When a desire to create arises from within you, then that desire or feeling is Karma. It is Sukshma Karma (action at the subtle level). The moment a desire arises in your mind, let us say to build a new building, then that’s it – the work or the action has already happened. For example, when the architect has made the blueprint of the house, then the construction of the house has already happened.
Then there is Sthula Karma (action at the material level), such as bringing the bricks, stones, mortar and constructing the house with them.
So, the subtle desires or feelings that arise beyond the realm of the five elements is also called Karma, and action that takes place in the realm of the five principle elements is also called Karma. Further to this, whatever impressions (as a result of action) get imprinted upon the mind also becomes Karma that one must go through.
Karma that is created through impressions
Certain activities and actions imprint impressions on the mind, creating Karma. And certain activities do not imprint any impression on the mind; in this case there is no karma.
You must have heard people say that – One must remain detached and dispassionate while performing any action. Have you all heard this? What does it mean? It means that you must act, but do not attach yourself to it and harbour it in your mind. Do not get stuck to it.
See, you cannot exist without doing some thing or the other. Everyone has to do something. But if you take an action too much to heart and drag it as a burden on the mind, then it becomes a different kind of Karma altogether (that creates bondage).
So, there are two categories of Karma:
1. Karma due to the impressions embedded in the mind
2. Karma that takes place through the five elements – Earth, Water, Fire, Air & Ether
Karma that does not carry any impressions
There is another type of action which just happens out of one's nature, where you don't even call it an action. It happens spontaneously, like an involuntary action. A child suddenly falls down and you spontaneously go and pick up the child because it is in your nature, it is in built in you to help somebody when they are in trouble. Don't you do that? You don't have to learn in school that whenever someone trips from the steps you have to go and help them. It is but natural. In that state, your action is akin to God's action - there is spontaneity there. An action done spontaneously does not form any Karma because it is coming out of your own nature. That's why when a tiger or a lion preys, it doesn't get any Karma. If a cat kills a rat, it doesn't get Karma because it is in its nature.
Everything is Karma, and everyone has to do some or the other karma.

THOUGHT FOR THE DAY |
Without delving deep into the significance of all that happens around them, people lead superficial lives. If only people meditate on the reality of one’s own existence, knowledge and joy, they will establish firm contact with the Source of all existence, all knowledge and all bliss. Without taking the first step towards self-inquiry, how can one derive self-satisfaction, infinite power and wisdom? You have it in your power to make your days on earth a path of flowers, instead of a path of thorns. Recognise the Divine Resident in every heart and life will be smooth, soft and sweet. God will be the fountain of Love in your heart and in the hearts of all with whom you come in contact with. Adore everyone as you adore Sai. Allow the other person as much freedom as you like to enjoy; do unto them just as you would like to be done to you. That is the sum and substance of Sadhana. (Divine Discourse, May 11, 1975) |

Meditation is food for the soul, it nurtures the core of your existence. Meditation has multiple benefits. It keeps you physically fit and healthy, mentally focused and sane. Intellectually, it brings such sharpness, keenness of attention, awareness and observation. Emotionally, you feel lighter, softer and purer. You are able to let go of all the past garbage. It creates positive vibrations around you, influencing your behaviour with others, and others behaviour with you. Meditation gives the deepest rest in the shortest time.

What SRI SRI said
In Satsang
30th October 2017 at the Art of Living International Center in Bangalore:
Q. Gurudev, this body is like a clothing for the soul, it keeps on changing it in every birth. So, what is the final goal of the soul, to be in the garment or to be without it?
Sri Sri: Simultaneously both, to be in it & yet not to be in it. Got it? If you got it, it's okay, if you are confused, it is even better. (Laughs).
Q. Gurudev, what to do when there is intense longing for the physical presence of the Guru (Master)? Does being in Sanyam means not to have this longing?
Sri Sri: Longing is part of life, it should be there, it is part of evolution. Longing is part of the ultimate. It is longing that turns into love & love turns into longing. It's two sides of the same coin.
Q. Gurudev, I was very curious to know things earlier, but after realising that what is worth knowing cannot be known, my curiosity has vanished. Is this okay or is there something wrong?
Sri Sri: No, no, your curiosity should turn into wonder, that is good. Wonderment!
Q. Gurudev, can the intellect sharpen the intuition & vice versa?
Sri Sri: Yes. They are two different dimensions, it's Pranayama which sharpens both. Rather, it is the 'pranayama’ that sharpens your intuition and your intellect.
Q. Gurudev, please explain how a Yogi should live his life and how can he attain siddhi?
Sri Sri: You know how Yogi has to be in the world. The word 'yogyata’ means ‘qualification’ or 'ability’, which comes from 'yog’. Means one who does 'yog’ is 'yogya’, one who is ‘capable’. So you are capable of doing things perfectly. Perfection is your language. Yogi does things perfectly, doesn't give up, doesn't lose his heart, and doesn't worry about the outcome whether you succeed or you don't succeed. Sometimes you succeed, sometimes you don't, a Yogi never minds, he just keeps going ahead.
Q. Gurudev, the ‘sanjeevani’ herb is said to cure death too, it is also said that knowledge of death liberates one. Could you please speak about life & death?
Sri Sri: I think this is what we have been doing all the time. Are we not talking about life, all the time? Yes. What is life, body, prana, mind, intellect, memory, our environment, the Panchkosha, I think we are talking about this only. You should read 'An Intimate Note To The Sincere Seeker’ several times.
And death is just a vacation in between lifetimes. That's all. You just take some days off, that's it. A long sleep, sometimes with dreams, sometimes without dreams, that's all. And when you wake up sometimes you completely forget and sometimes some don't forget.

THOUGHT FOR THE DAY |
Today there is no love between elders and youngsters in the home; children do not revere parents. This moral decline will undermine unity and strength. Moral decline is worse than military decline; it will lead to greater disaster. If you always meditate on ‘mine and me’, how can you be useful to others? Sacrifice is the 'salt' of life; it’s the secret to peace and joy. 'Go' means the senses; so, the name 'Go-pala' (one of God’s names) means, he who controls the senses. And, why should they be controlled? So that they may not stand in the way of sacrifice. All the senses are self-centred and egoistic. They must be educated to be inward-directed, towards the Universal Atma. That is gained by entrusting the senses to Gopala (God). Everyone must pass through sat-karma or good deeds, into the realm of expanding Love and from Love, learn the lesson of sacrifice, dedication and surrender to the one Overlord. (Divine Discourse, 27-Mar-1965) |

What SRI SRI said
The 3 Types of Karma
11/14/2017 Bangalore, India

The 3 Types of Karma
No event or action can happen without a cause. There needs to be a cause for every result. So every effect has a cause and this cause is Karma. Many people think Karma is fate. Karma is not just fate.
The literal meaning of Karma is action and action has got 3 forms:
1. The action which is latent (suksma), which is going to become an action. This is called Sanchita Karma
2. The action itself (sthula). This is called Prarabdha Karma
3. The consequence of the present action (in the form of an impression) on the future. This is called Agami Karma. The impact or effect of an action is also Karma, because every effect becomes a cause in itself.
You are reading – this is an action which is manifesting now. This is Prarabdha Karma.
You wanted to read this knowledge several hours ago, which made you come to this page. The thought of wanting to read this knowledge in the future is called Sanchita Karma.
After reading this knowledge you may remember some things and you may totally forget some things. The things that you remember may propel another action in the future which is Agami Karma.
So karma means: The present action that you are doing (Prarabdha) that is creating an impression in your mind (Agami) which will draw similar situations in the future(Sanchita).
The cycle of cause and effect
I will give you a simple example. Suppose you have been drinking coffee every morning, and one day you don't drink coffee and you get a headache, this is coffee Karma. It is because you have had coffee in the past, the impression of it in the mind creates the craving for coffee.
When you are making coffee and drinking it, that is Karma. After you have had coffee, the impression of it creates the craving for it in the future that is the future impressionable karma. So, the past impressions in the mind is one Karma, the present action you are doing is another Karma, and the impression of the present action is another Karma.
An impression in the mind is latent action – it is still action, but it is latent. Just like a memory. One memory is functional now, and other memories are latent within us.
For example: you know the mathematical table, but right now you are not memorizing it. You have already memorized it, and when you need it, it pops up. Are you getting what I am saying? So certain strong impressions remain in the mind and they form the future Karma.
Until the impression of your previous done Karma is there on your mind, that Karma manages to exist. You are freed from karma once the impression is erased.

Your life is a long journey. You should have less luggage (desires) in this journey of life. Therefore, it is said: ‘less luggage more comfort, makes travel a pleasure’. You have many desires. What do you get out of them? There are rules for ceiling with regard to land and property. But is there any rule you observe to exercise a ceiling on your desires? Ceiling on desires is the need of the hour today. It means exercising control over your own desires. You can be truly happy only when your desires are controlled. You are under the mistaken notion that happiness lies in the fulfilment of desires. But in fact, happiness begins to dawn when desires are totally eradicated. Cut short your desires, day after day. When you reduce your desires, you advance very rapidly towards the state of renunciation, peace and bliss. (Divine Discourse, Mar 14, 1999) |
-BABA |
Desires make you dance all your life. When one desire of yours gets fulfilled, then you get another ten desires. This run to fulfil one desire after another keeps you going on the merry-go-round, or the misery-go-round (laughter). It keeps you on tenterhooks. If you just look into this dance that desires make you do in your life; you will be so amazed. And some desires are very subtle ones, they get into your heart and make you dance. That is how the world is.

Inner Peace Outer Dynamism - Transcript of Gurudev's Talk at JNU on 13 November 2017
11/13/2017 Bangalore, India

Good morning everyone! I've heard a lot about this university. In fact, this university has created many global leaders. Whether you go to Nepal, Bangladesh, Mauritius or any other county, you will find that there are leaders who take great pride in being an alumni of JNU.
Inner Peace and Outer Dynamism
I don’t know how much inner peace is here, but I am sure there is quite a lot of dynamism in this university, and the media is proof of that! You have been in the media almost every quarter. Some dynamic activity keeps happening in the university and that is a sign of youthfulness. The youth don’t keep quiet, they are dynamic. What is important is to remember that dynamism needs to be supported by peace. Dynamism should not just be supported by restlessness or rebelliousness and it should not be mistaken for agitation. And inner peace is not synonymous to lethargy or complacence.
What is Peace?
Often we see, people who talk about inner peace are so complacent. They say, “Whatever is happening, let it happen.” They are sort of resigning from everything and being a recluse. Getting into a hole is what appears to be peace. People who love peace want to run away to the Himalayas or some quiet corner where nobody can disturb them, because they love peace. That peace has no value. And dynamism which has no thought, which is full of agitation, which has brought pain to oneself and others has no value. The need of the hour today and every day is the fine combination of inner peace and outer dynamism.
We need a combination of sensitivity and sensibility. People who are sensitive are hyper; they tend to lose their temper at the drop of a hat. And people who are sensible don’t care about the impact of their actions on others. They don’t care because they think they are righteous. It is not enough just being righteous.
Coming to communication – neither the sensitive person nor the sensible can be a good communicator in the world, this is what I feel. Our population in India is a mixed batch of sensitive and sensibile people. There are some who are extremely sensitive and others who are utterly sensible. What we need each one to do is - find the balance; the connectivity. I feel one of the most important characteristics of a civilized person is connectivity - how best you can connect with everyone.
Re-establishing Connectivity
In one of my talks, there were two-three politicians sharing the stage with me who were known for corruption. I was asked by someone in the audience, “How could you share the stage with corrupt people around you? You are talking about anti-corruption and you are sharing the stage with corrupt people.”
I said that what do I have to do with only honest people? My message is irrelevant if I just address the honest. I want all the corrupt people to come and sit next to me, so I can at least have an impact on them. This is like saying – if you are a doctor, you have all the more reason to work with sick people. So I said, I want to reach out to the corrupt people.
Corruption begins where a sense of belongingness ends. If there is an officer from Tamil Nadu sitting here in Delhi, and a Tamilian comes, do you know, he will not ask for him a bribe? But if he sees someone else, maybe from Karnataka or Punjab, then he will ask for a bribe because there is no sense of connectivity. It is similar to how you probably behave when you go to America or Europe or even a neighboring country and meet someone who says, “I also studied in JNU”. What happens to you? You feel a sense of connectivity. It is this connectivity that improves communication. When communication is better, conflicts simply disappear. Every conflict has in its root a breakdown of communication. And as human beings, we have the skill to re-establish our connectivity.
A Vision for World Peace
I want to share with you an incidence that happened when I first went to Iraq. I was put in the Green Zone and was given 12 vehicles for my security, including two tankers. I told them that I want to go to the Red Zone, what do I do sitting in the Green Zone? I have not come here just to be in the four walls of a 5-star hotel. They said to me that just a couple of days ago, Tony Blair was here and there was a bomb blast in the Red Zone, we can’t take a risk and send you there. I pleaded, “I take responsibility for my security. If you want, I can give you that in writing.”
Being their guest, they could not say no, but they were so scared to say yes. They said, “We can just drop you at that gate, but after that we are not responsible.”
I said, “Never mind.”
So they escorted me to the Red Zone and dropped me there. I then went to a village that had only Shias because all the Sunnis were driven away from there. They welcomed me there. I sat with them, spoke with them and told them I wanted to bring a guest this evening, and they said, “Yes, bring anybody.”
In the evening I took with me one Sunni Imam who was driven away from that village. When they met, the people said, “We will welcome back the 8,000 families that were driven away from here, let them come back.”
It is just a matter of understanding one’s sensitivity, and bringing some sense to them. This can happen only if we are peaceful. World peace cannot come by only stopping bombs. World peace is generated right where we are. It is peaceful individuals who can make peaceful families. If one person in a family is unhappy, he destroys the happiness or peace of everybody in the family. And you can see this as an extension to the entire world. Unfortunately today, many conflicts in the world are driven by greed and ulterior motives. If you go into the root cause of conflict, you will be stunned as to how these conflicts are created between nations by the lobby who wants to become richer – at the cost of millions of people. Why is this happening? It is because we are not sensitive to others’ needs. We are not sensitive to the humanness that we all possess. Our identity has clogged our humanness – our true identity.
We have many identities in life. First and foremost, we are part of one light, one human force. Our second identity is with our gender. Third is with the nation, and fourth identity is with our religion. If the priority of our identity is misplaced, that is when violence happens. We all need identity. For identity to have its right priority, we need inner peace. And inner peace makes us sensitive to others’ needs.
The Paigham-e-Mohabbat Meet
Day before yesterday, we had the Paigham-e-Mohabbat (Healing Hearts) meet, where for the first time, 100 families of Kashmir militants met with the families of our Jawans (soldiers). The Kashmiri militants are nice people. They or their children took to guns. If you ask them why you took to guns, they have reasons. If you hear them, they say, we are right. But they came along with 40 families of our Jawans who had been martyred. For the first time when they came and met each other, there was such a huge wave of emotions. This is for the first time perhaps, in the history of this nation, something like this has happened.
Harmony in Diversity
When Tsunami struck this country and Sri Lanka, in a very strange way, it united people. I was travelling all along the Tamil Nadu and Sri Lanka coast, and we saw that the mosques were open to everybody. Even in the temples we saw that there were burkha-clad ladies taking shelter there, otherwise they would have never entered the temples. And they would never have been allowed inside either. So, when natural calamity happened, it united the minds of people in a very strange manner. And everyone served everyone, irrespective of their religion and political ideology.
These are the things that divide us, religious and political ideology – I am a communist, capitalist, socialist or whatever – these ideologies keep the human minds divided. You can have your ideologies but the world cannot be of only one ideology. Let everyone have different ideologies. If the world should be based on one ideology, it should be of one humanity and humanism. If humanism is missing, ideologies will create more conflicts, however good or bad they may be.
The beauty of our world is that it has diversity. There are thorns, soft petals, hard nuts, soft fruits – that is the beauty of this creation. Every fruit cannot be like a coconut. And every nut cannot be so hard to crack. And the world needs this kind of diversity, we must encourage it. This is the greatness of this country. We always encouraged diversity.

THOUGHT FOR THE DAY |
Change the angle of your vision. When you practice seeing the world from the point of view of the omnipresence of the Divine, you will be transformed. You will experience the power of the Divine in everything in creation. You cannot hide anything from God. Many imagine that Swami does not see what they are doing. They do not realise that Swami has a million eyes. Even your eyes are divine. But you are not aware of your true nature. When you have faith in yourself, you will have faith in God. Realise that there is nothing beyond the power of God. Love God with that supreme faith. Then you will be drawn towards God. It needs purity. A magnet cannot attract a piece of iron covered with rust. Similarly, God will not draw to Himself an impure person. Hence, change your feelings and thoughts and develop the conviction that God is everywhere and in every being. (Divine Discourse, Feb 27, 1995) |

Wake up see, God is present everywhere. God is in all the forms: birds, trees, flowers and beautiful human beings. What form do you want him or her to come in? See him in every form. All the forms are of that one formless that you call God.

What SRI SRI said
The Other Side Of Fear
The Usefulness of Fear, Nature has put an amount of inbuilt fear in all living beings. This fear makes life defend itself, protect itself. Like salt in the food, a little bit of fear is essential for people to be righteous.
§ Fear of hurting someone makes you more conscious.
§ Fear of failure makes you more keen and dynamic.
§ Fear moves you from carelessness to taking care.
§ Fear moves you from being insensitive to being sensitive.
§ Fear moves you from dullness to alertness.
Total lack of fear may lead to destructive tendencies - a distorted ego knows no fear. Neither does the expanded consciousness! Whereas the ego dismisses the fear and moves in a disruptive manner, the wise one acknowledges the fear and takes refuge in the Divine.
When you are in love, when you are surrendered, there is no fear. Ego, too, knows no fear. But there is a difference, like that of heaven and earth, between these two types of fearless states. Fear makes you righteous; fear brings you close to surrender; fear keeps you on the path; keeps you from being destructive. Peace and law are maintained on the planet because of fear.
A new-born child knows no fear - it totally relies on its mother. Whether a child, a kitten or a bird, when they start becoming independent they experience fear which makes them go running back to their mothers. This is inbuilt by nature to sustain life. So, the purpose of fear is to bring you back to the source!!

THOUGHT FOR THE DAY |
Truth is unchangeable, irrespective of time and place. Wherever you are, truth is truth, love is love! If you have love, truth will automatically become part of you and vice versa. You are all born with love. But unfortunately, as you grow up, the selfless love in you gradually starts declining, and hatred and jealousy begin to increase. Jealousy is a very bad quality. It will not only harm others, but also will cause harm to you as well. Hence do not ever give scope for such evil qualities to germinate within you. Strive to cultivate good qualities like love and truth. Only then can you experience uninterrupted peace. When you develop the firm faith that God is in you and you are God and that your body itself is the temple of God, then there will be no scope at all for anger, jealousy, pride, etc., to trouble you. Hence beloved ones, develop love and compassion. (Divine Discourse, May 2, 2006) |

A person with authentic love feels obliged to the person who accepts his love. They could have rejected it!
When you start giving love with a deep sense of gratitude to all those who accept it, you will be surprised to know that you are no longer a beggar knocking on every door for love, you have become an emperor.
Love belongs to the world of emperors, not of beggars.

Dreams
When something is unbelievably beautiful or joyful, you wonder whether it is a dream. Often, what you perceive as reality is not joyful and so when misery is there, you never wonder if it is a dream. You are sure it is real. This is knowing the real as unreal and unreal as real. In fact, all the miseries are unreal. A wise man knows that happiness is real, as it is one's very nature. Unhappiness is unreal as it is inflicted by memory. When you see everything as a dream, then you abide in your true nature.
Payal asks : "What about a nightmare?"
Sri Sri : A nightmare is a dream mistaken as reality. There is no confusion in a dream at all. Keep wondering whether all this is a dream and you'll wake up to the real.

THOUGHT FOR THE DAY |
Sanctify your life by developing sense control. It is only because people have no control over their senses and no limit to their desires that there is a lot of unrest and agitation in society. Many people roam about in society like animals. You should not become so. Whenever some evil thoughts arise in you, you should remind yourself that you are a human being and not an animal. Anger is an animal quality. When animals get angry, they fight with one another. Unfortunately, today human beings are also fighting among themselves like animals. Animals have a reason and a season, but human beings have no reason, no season and behave worse than animals. Being a human being, you should cultivate human qualities and do not get angry! Even if anger overpowers you, you should try to become calm and quiet. Do not lose your cool. When you cultivate calmness, you will never become agitated and restless. (Divine Discourse, May 2, 2006) |

Keep your mind calm. But if somebody talks bad, be alert. Reply if needed, but without disturbing your mind. Service, Satsang and sadhana help you keep your mind cool and calm. And know that – Satyamev jayate (Truth always wins). You should not be bothered about events. Keep your mind cool, and continue with this policy.

What SRI SRI said
Karma and Reincarnation
11/20/2017 Bangalore, India

The Meaning of Karma
The most used and mis-understood word is Karma. The literal meaning of Karma is action. Action could be latent, could be in the form of tendency, and it could be a future happening. These are the three forms of Karma.
So Karma means:
1. The impression of the past which will draw similar situations in the future (that is future Karma)
2. The present action that you are doing that is creating an impression in your mind. That is again called karma
How to Eliminate Karma?
Every habit is a sort of karma. Suppose you have been drinking coffee every morning, and one day you don't drink it, you get a headache. This is coffee karma. Now how to eliminate coffee karma?
· By drinking coffee, or
· By not drinking coffee but just observing the sensations in your body, or
· By doing some breathing exercises, or meditation
Being aware of a tendency in you will help you overcome the tendency. Here comes the play of knowledge (awareness). Knowledge does not mean informative knowledge, it means awareness. The sense of knowingness. When you increase your sense of knowingness your karma gets reduced. Like you feel like throttling somebody but because you are aware, you don't do it. If you are not aware, then when the tendency comes up to throttle somebody, you just go and throttle them. You act on it.
Every impression is Karma, but there is nothing to worry about it because Karma is not like an engraving on a rock, it is fluid. And Karma is always bound by time because every action has only a limited reaction, not infinite.
How Karma Relates to Reincarnation
All animal have only prarabdha karma, which means, that Karma over which they do not have any control. Mother Nature runs them, so they don't accumalate any future karma. If you are totally like an animal, you don't get any karma. But as a human being this is impossible because the mind gets into the impression and accumulates future Karma. And Karma is that which propels reincarnation. Stronger the impression, the nature of the next life could be predicted by that.
There is one thing that can erase karma and that is knowledge and self-awareness. If you are aware of yourself, if you are in total love, then you are free from karma. Then you are not bound by any impression, you are free. What gives you freedom is your awareness.
Reincarnation - Coming Again Into the Body
Our mind is energy, and by the law of thermodynamics you know that energy cannot be destroyed. If mind is energy, then what happens to this energy when someone dies?
Death is almost like sleep. What happens when you sleep? While sleeping, your consciousness and your attention shrinks and you shut out from your outer experiences and move inward into a void. And when you wake up in the morning – the same consciousness which was shrunk starts expanding and opens up, and you wake up.
If you carefully observe the mechanism, the last thought that you get just before falling asleep becomes the first thought when you wake up. This gives you a clue of your reincarnation. The mind which is full of different impressions leaves this body, but the impressions remain with the mind like a balloon and waits for a proper situation for the same mind to reincarnate. When there is copulation, and the proper womb formation, then it just pulls that mind into that womb and that is how a child is born; a body is gained.
It is said that the last thought is most important. Whatever you do through-out your life, at least in the last moment of your life you should be free and happy. If you are happy in the last moment, before you leave the body, then you get a better body the next time around.
The impression in the mind will produce such circumstances and such situations for the mind to take on the next body.

THOUGHT FOR THE DAY |
It is essential for students to understand why morality and spirituality have disappeared from society. Education without character, science without human values, commerce without ethics, and politics without truth are responsible for the erosion of virtue. Students have a duty to develop patriotism and restore these forgotten values. Today’s education makes one clever but does not instill virtue. Students transform their heads (mastakam) into books (pustakam) without practising human values. There is no benefit in turning your head into a book or vice versa. Recognise the path of Truth and demonstrate it in day-to-day living. The world needs people imbued with integrity. All that is learned must culminate in behaviour. Life today is based on show, expenditure, and comfort. Humanity’s problems can be solved not by money or science but by humanity alone. People must transform themselves to live as human beings. (Divine Discourse, May 20, 1991) |

Gurudev, what is the parameter to call myself a good human being?
Sri Sri Ravi Shankar: An eye that can see beyond the obvious, ears that can give a patient hearing, an intellect that is free from prejudice, an intention to help those in need, and a heart that is strong and soft.
It is easy to find people who are very emotional, and say, "Oh, I love everybody". They are compassionate but have no strength in them, they cannot endure even a simple criticism, which is no good. Then there are those who just throw their weight around; they are very harsh and hard. They feel like there is a stone inside - that is not the quality of a good human being.
A good human being has the right combination of the head and the heart, the left and right brain is balanced.

Walk Alone
Sometimes, young people should learn to walk alone. Then you will be more centered and you will know how to be by yourself and not be bogged down by peer pressure. Take a long five kilometer walk all by yourself, or run by yourself. That will solidify your personality.
If you are surrounded by friends all the time, you will feel you cannot exist without friends. But if you are trained to take longs walks and runs, then you know that you can walk by yourself.
The poet Rabindranath Tagore has written a song called ‘Ekla Chalo Re’ (walk alone) and that song inspired so many people during the freedom struggle. Even if nobody comes, you walk by yourself, be a leader. If you get bogged down by peer pressure you can only be a follower, not a leader.
Why do you want company of your friends? It is because you want attention from them, and attention gives energy. And if you are not a leader, nobody is going to pay you attention especially in schools and colleges. So to overcome peer pressure what do you do? Stand up and walk alone.

We emerge having lived through our past impressions, more alive to the present moment and to open to celebrating life. The process has given deep healing experiences to many people.

THOUGHT FOR THE DAY |
Embodiments of the Divine Self! You are celebrating today as the Birthday of Swami, and deriving divine bliss (ananda) through various programs carried on with enthusiasm; but in fact, I have no wish to consider this as a special day! Such desire, does not exist in Me at any time, in this or any other sojourn. I need nothing, however great or small, in this Universe! I have come with one purpose: To reveal to everyone of you the mystery of your reality and the goal of your life! What you should place before Me as offering is Pure Love from within. When you offer Me that, I derive Ananda! From today, spend your days and years in activities that help and care for those who are in dire need, and make this human existence of yours worthwhile and fruitful. Conduct yourself appropriately and realise the goal of your life. My blessings to you! [Divine Discourse, Nov 23, 1974] |

The society needs you. The society is to be benefitted through you. Like you have felt happiness, same way you can bring this happiness to 10, 20, 50 people. When you are happy and others become happy through you, I will also be happier.

Commitment and Convenience ![]()
A commitment can only be felt when it oversteps convenience. That which is convenient, you do not call commitment. If you just go on your convenience, your commitment falls apart causing more inconvenience! If you keep dropping your commitment because it is inconvenient, can you be comfortable? Often, what is convenient does not bring comfort, but gives an illusion of comfort. Also if you are too stuck in commitment, and it is too inconvenient too often, you will be unable to fulfill your commitment and it will only generate frustration. Wisdom is to strike a balance between convenience and commitment because both bring comfort to the body, mind and spirit.
A seeker of knowledge should forget about convenience, so should soldiers, rulers, students, seekers of wealth and all essential service providers. Those who want to be creative and adventurous transcend convenience. Those who are ambitious and have a passion for a goal do not care for convenience. To the wise their commitment is their comfort. Whenever their commitment is shaken, their comfort is also shaken. To the lazy, commitment is torture though it is the best remedy. Commitment will always bring comfort in the long run.
Question: Are there any commitments that can be given up?
Sri Sri : Yes. Sometimes when you are committed without a vision, you feel stifled when your vision expands. Such commitments made with shortsightedness can be given up. A smaller less important commitment can be given up for a greater commitment. Commitment to the means can be given up for the sake of the commitment to the goals. When your commitment brings misery to many in the long run it can be given up.

THOUGHT FOR THE DAY |
In the present times, there is none fully good, and so who deserves the protection of God? All are tainted by wickedness! Will anyone survive if God decides to uproot evil? Therefore I have to correct the buddhi (intellect) by various means; I have to counsel, help, command, condemn and standby as friend and well-wisher to all, so that they may give up evil propensities, recognise the straight path, tread it and reach the goal. I have to reveal to the people the worth of the Vedas and the scriptural texts, which lay down the norms. The easiest path to self-realisation is the surrender of the ego. Arjuna surrendered and so the war he was engaged was transformed into a yajna, a sacrifice! Daksha performed a yajna, but was so full of egoism and chose not to surrender! So his yajna was transformed into a war filled with hate. Do not pit your tiny ego against the Almighty; leave it to His Will and you will enjoy lasting peace. [Divine Discourse, Nov 23, 1964] |

What SRI SRI said
Here is Why You Must Not Judge or Blame
11/23/2017 Bangalore, India

Recognize Your Tendency to Judge and Blame
We all have this tendency – we judge ourselves too much, or we judge others. Either you start blaming yourself, or you blame somebody else. Either you find you are not right, or you find that someone else is not okay. You should wake up and stop judging.
The First Rule towards Self-development is to Stop Blaming Yourself
Whomsoever you blame, do you like to be with them? Do you like to be with someone you are unhappy with? No! So, if you blame yourself, you can’t be with yourself. So, the first law on the journey or path to self-development is to stop blaming yourself.
Now, don’t say, “Oh! That means I can blame others.” No! Every time you have blamed somebody, when you see what you blamed them for from a broader perspective, you will find that it was wrong and futile.
Why You Should Not Blame Others or Yourself
I say “don’t blame others” because if you blame others, it is going to rebound on you. You should not blame anybody.
I have never blamed anyone or never said any bad words. It has not come out of me at all. I didn’t do anything to make it happen – it was naturally like that from the very beginning. I could never abuse anybody – verbal abuse or any other abuse.
When you pay attention to this, when you stop using bad words, your words gain the power to bless. So, stop blaming yourself and stop blaming others. Things are the way they are, just move on and that is it.
You know, sometimes people say, “Oh! This person is a fraud. He is not genuine.”
But one should have some criteria to say that. Many times, you don’t even have criteria to judge somebody, yet you simply blame them, “Oh! He is a fraud,” and that’s it, finished.
This is an unconscious tendency that has developed in society – blaming others and oneself and then feeling guilty about it. The spiritual journey is to remove this and reverse it.
It is such a delicate thing. This does not mean that you justify all the mistakes you do. When you make some mistake, they you cannot say, “Oh, I am on the spiritual path, so I cannot accept my mistake and I cannot blame myself. So, whatever I do is right.” No! It is a delicate balance. It is not to justify your mistake, but to recognize your mistake and at the same time not blame yourself.
If you don’t accept and recognize your mistakes you will never improve. That’s the end of the story. At the same time, if you recognize your mistake and you feel so guilty and you keep blaming yourself, then too it is a hopeless case. So, you need that very delicate balance – neither this side, nor that side.
Look at Life from a Bigger Context
Remember not to be too hard on yourself. You are part of a phenomenon that is happening. There are trees, rivers, and birds on the planet – just like that, you are also here. So many birds are born and so many birds are dying. Isn’t it? So many trees are coming up and they all vanish. Like this, so many people—so many bodies—have come and they will all vanish. This planet has been there for billions of years. See your life from this bigger context—with a sense of purpose—and then you will stop blaming or judging.

THOUGHT FOR THE DAY |
I will tell you today what is beneficial to you, which you must put into daily practice. Develop renunciation with regards to your own needs and wishes. Examine each on the touchstone of essentiality. When you pile up things in your apartment, you only promote darkness and dust; so also, do not collect and store too many materials in your mind. Travel light. Have just enough to sustain life and maintain health. The pappu (dish of lentils) must have only enough uppu (salt) to make it relishing; do not spoil the 'dal' with extra salt. Life becomes difficult to bear, if you add too much desire to it. Limit your desires to your capacity and amongst them, choose those that grant lasting joy. Do not run after fashion and public approval and strain your resources. Stick to your own code of rules that regulate your life based on your spiritual progress. Place the needs and joys of others first, as more important than yours! [Divine Discourse, Aug 19, 1964] |

What SRI SRI said
In Satsang
24th November 2017 at the Art of Living International Center in Bangalore:

Q. Gurudev, what kind of people should a leader keep around them: those who always agree or those who point out their shortcomings?
Sri Sri: Leader has to be careful about psychophants. The psychophants surround the leader and always praise him, 'Oh, you are the best’ and blah, blah, blah. And the leader's head goes reeling 'Oh, I am the best in the world.’ This is dangerous.
And then there another type of people who are afraid of putting forth their ideas & opinions. Even if they are asked, because they are insecure about their themselves & their positions, they will not speak the truth. And no leader can afford to have such people around him.
And then the third category of people, who question everything the leader does. And if a leader has to explain to his close people, every time, every decision, he has to be defensive about himself & his action, it is the biggest headache. If you are sensitive, you tend to explain all your actions to your team, then it becomes the worst thing I tell you. Then you can't move an inch, you cannot take care of anything else, you will be caught in just making your point understood by people around you.
So these are two extreme people: one, those who all the time doubt the intention of a leader & keep questioning him & wanting an explanation for every move.
On the other extreme, are those who are afraid to air (voice) their opinion. You know airing one's opinion does not have to be rude, you can mention your opinion.
And being psychophant, praising though you don't believe in it. Psychophants mean what: you don't believe in it. When the praise comes naturally from your heart, that is not psychophancy. Psychophancy is what: when you praise and you don't believe in what you are doing. These sort of people a leader should be careful about is what I think.
In one type, he won't get the right information & he won't be able to act right. And with the other type of people also his whole energy will be drained. Because he has to explain to everybody around him all the time.
So, a leader must be a little thick-skinned when it comes to people questioning him on everything he wants to do. His questioning is intentional, everything. Such team will not work, defunct.
And leader should not be swayed away by the praises and the adorations, the psychophants around him would give.
So a leader needs that enlightened, alert, aware mindset. Right? Your decision is not influenced by events & people around. Your decisions are coming from intuitive awareness, from inside. And it will always be for good. A leader must work with his intuition, sometimes logic alone doesn't work.
Q. Gurudev, how can I strengthen my intellect, through effort or effortlessness or is it a matter of grace?
Sri Sri: All the three! Intellect can be strengthened by effort, and effort is: you have to take proper care of food, and proper rest and breathing exercise is important and study, reading, knowing information about it, open to information and intellect should be questioning, you should not leave anything unquestioned, question it. Often people think questioning is against faith. In the Orient (Philosophy) it was never that way. In the Orient, you have to question. The Oriental Philosophy has always emphasized on the question. You know, I have already spoken about five different types of questions. Right?! Yes.
So, question and then you get the answer, then you just dwell on the answer and again question. So intellectual height can be achieved through this.
Even Lord Krishna, after giving all the 700 verses, He says (to Arjuna) 'You think about it, you dwell on it & if you find it proper, you accept it.’ That's what Lord Krishna says in Bhagavad Gita also.
So, there is Upanishad also, called the 'Prashno-Upanishad’, the Upanishad of Questioning. What is the right type of questioning, How to question. You know, even questioning is an art!
In the five type of questions, one type of question is when you are upset, when you are unhappy, you say 'Why this trouble to me? Why this is happening to me?’ You know that is a question which you are not looking for an answer. Miserable people ask this type of question. 'Why me?’ 'Why this misery has to me?’ And if you try to answer them, then they are not ready to take any answer. Those people you should not even answer, just listen to them, be with them. 'Why me, why this to me, God has done so much injustice to me.’ You will be put in a position either to advocate God or against God. Isn't it?! You will be asked to either give a statement against God or for God. Many people are at loss of words, what to say to people who are so miserable? This is one type of question.
The other type of question is people ask questions just to make their presence felt. They are not interested to know the answer. That is the second type of question.
The third type of question is, you know the answer, you are fixed with the answer, you just want to know whether the other guy knows the answer or not, so you ask a question. And if that answer matches yours, only then you will accept. You are not asking a question with really wanting to know the answer.
I will give an example, once somebody was standing near Mughalsaray railway station, and the Ticket Collector was asking, this person was asking Ticket Collector 'Where does this train go?’ T.C. said this train goes here. Another train comes, 'where does that go?’ T.C. said that goes there. And he kept on asking for four-five trains, finally, T.C. asked him 'Where do you want to go, tell me?’ He said I only just want to cross over, that's all. So, it's irrelevant, the question is not connected, it's not coming from your heart, you are simply asking.
Many times people ask such question just to gather information that never gets registered in them.
And then another type of question is where you sincerely want to know the answer, so you are asking for it.
And the fifth type of question is that you are not expecting an answer, it is that the question turns into a wonder! 'Awe, how come this is like this, so beautiful?’ These are the questions you are not looking for an answer from somebody, but it also appears like a question.

THOUGHT FOR THE DAY |
Lord Krishna demonstrated that if you practise the spiritual exercise of living in the constant presence of God, you are bound to achieve victory. Take Him as your charioteer; He will steer you through the heaviest of odds. He has no favourites or rivals. Like fire, He spreads warmth to all near Him. If you do not feel the warmth, do not blame Him: blame yourself! Hiranyakashipu said, 'He is nowhere' and so, God was nowhere for him; Prahlada asserted 'He is everywhere,' and He appeared from the pillar to prove him true. God did not run into the pillar to come out of it! He was there all along, just as in everything else! He just made Himself visible! I am also like that; if you accept Me and say yes, I too respond and say, “Yes, yes, yes”! If you deny and say, no, I also echo, “no”. Come, examine, experience and have faith; that is the best way to profit from Me. [Divine Discourse, Nov 23, 1964] |

I have travelled across the world and human values excel like nowhere like in India.
When you are centered then you are able to act dynamically.
The intention to harm someone are the act that you do with rage and anger is Himsa (Violence). An act you do to save someone is Ahimsa (Non-violence).
This country (India) excels in human values like no where else in the world.
You go to a village. If all of the village have just one glass of milk, they will share half of the glass with a guest who comes to the village. #SriSri
An old lady who lost everything in 2001 Gujarat earthquake donated 100/- to our volunteers for earthquake relief stating that she did not lose her Dharma in the quake.
There is something that is binding from Rameshwaram to Kedarnath, that is Faith. Unity in Diversity is honored in this country (India) like no where else.
Inspite of all the differences of religion, caste and language, India is united because of its spirituality.
The value of Unity in Diversity is valued in India like nowhere else .
Perhaps all the youth in India should undergo military service for a year or two. In military you are trained for values like strength and integrity.
The world takes care of you when you give yourself to the world

THOUGHT FOR THE DAY |
Do not demean your talents; when you dive deep into yourselves you can discover the source of all strength. Ants creeping over a huge rock, millions of them, can carve a deep groove along their path. The minute feet of the ant have that power. You might have seen on the walls around the village wells, deep holes produced on granite slabs by the continuous placing of water pots! The pots are made of mud, but over years they erase even the hardest granite! The embodiment of the Self (Atma-swarupa) that you are is not an embodiment of insignificance (alpa-swarupam)! The Atma is not anaemic. It is a powerful dynamo, capable of generating enormous power. Your spiritual teacher (Guru) shows you the goal (guri); but, you must generate the power yourself, by your own spiritual effort. [Divine Discourse, Nov 23, 1964] |

Anything done to uplift your spirit, to make you walk towards the truth, that brings up human values within, that connects you to the innermost and outermost is spiritual. Meditation, pranayama, yoga, service, singing, chanting, creating happiness around you are all part of spirituality. If you create misery, then that is not spirituality. If you can create joy, it is spiritual. But not momentary joy. Such joy, in the long term, creates misery that is not spiritual. Alcohol, drugs can create momentary joy but they are not at all spiritual. That is the spirit.

What SRI SRI said
In Satsang
27th November 2017 at the Art of Living International Center, Bangalore:

Q. Gurudev, which vrutti (tendency) does planning & wonder fall in?
Sri Sri: It can fall under any one of the first three vruttis: Pramana, Viparyaya, or Vikalpa. You may wonder about your own imagination, you may wonder about the reality, and wonderment can arise out of wrong understanding as well. Planning also, if you have the right idea, intuitive planning comes under Pramana, illusive planning comes under Viparyaya, and wrong planning comes under Vikalpa. The planning that does not take off at all, it is just imaginary so it can fall in any one of the three.
Q. Gurudev, what is the way to slow down & yet not get caught up in inertia?
Sri Sri: This is an excuse to slow down. ‘Oh, I may get into inertia’ this is to justify yourself 'Oh I am getting into inertia.’ Like that, if you think or say so that you can avoid slowing down. Just slow down and see what happens. When you are centered, then you are able to act dynamically.
Q: Gurudev, sometimes I feel that I should engage full time in seva (service). However, sometimes it seems that seva should be done along with a job. How should we choose? Is there any criteria?
Sri Sri: Listen, you take how much responsibility you have, at home, how many people are dependent on you, you have to take care of them. And then you have to take care of the society, the world as well. And you can do both. In fact, everyone must do both, to what degree that is for you to decide. The world takes care of you when you give yourself to the world.
When you stop thinking 'What about me, what will happen to me, how I will survive when I become old?' You can put to rest all these thoughts because when you are dedicating your life to service of society, to service of divinity, you will see that all your needs will be taken care of, more than what is needed, for sure.
Q. What are the characteristics of being spiritually evolved?
Sri Sri: Look back and see how you were, and look now and see how you are, and project in the future what you want to be. You will see the contrast. And if the contrast is growth, expansion, happiness, you are on the spiritual path. If you are regressing, if you are angry, if you are feeling depressed, you are far away from the spiritual path.

THOUGHT FOR THE DAY |
The bee hovers around the lotus, it sits upon it, it drinks the nectar; while drinking the sweet intoxicating honey, it is silent, steadfast, concentrated, and forgetful of all else. That pure love (prema) is experienced by the inner I, which is the reflection of the real I, your Divine Soul (Atma). Every individual behaves exactly like the bee when they are immersed in the presence of God. The hum of the bee ceases and it is silent once the drinking of the nectar begins. So also, people argue, fight, condemn, and assert only until they discover the sweet essence of Divinity (rasa). The Divine rasa or essence is prema rasa, the sweetness of pure love. Where there is love, there can be no fear, no anxiety, no doubt, and no ashanti (absence of peace). When you are afflicted with restlessness and agitation, you can be sure that your love is narrow, restricted, and it has some ego or selfishness mixed in it. [Divine Discourse, Feb 26, 1968] |
-BABA |
From birth we have known love to be directed from a person. Love gets personalized from birth. A child opens the eyes and looks at the mother and starts feeling that love. Association kindles the feeling of love inside of you. But when it matures you start understanding love is not just an emotion, it is your very existence.
Love directed towards an individual is one aspect of universal love. First a person stimulates the love inside of you, then when you go deep in meditation you will find that love doesn’t need any stimuli from outside, it is already existing everywhere.
Actually we are floating in an ocean of love. It is like when you are in a bath tub, you feel the heat or cold as you get into the tub. But after a while you get used to it, and you don’t feel it anymore. Same way when you get into a hot pool, for the first few moments, you feel the heat. Then you don’t feel the heat, you get used to it.
In the same way, the personalized love in the beginning kindles that. Once it is there it assumes the universal form. So you may not feel it but still it will be there. Individuals remind you that there is love in the universe, and you are love

What SRI SRI said
In Satsang
28th November 2017 at the Art of Living International Center, Bangalore:
Q. Gurudev, what are the essential qualities of an ideal learner of 21st Century?
Sri Sri: First of all, there is a hunger to learn, number one. Second is, you should learn with a clean slate. If you think you know & you try to learn then it doesn't work. So every time you learn something, you cannot be prejudiced or overcast by what you have learnt, so then your perception becomes fresh & clear. And what you learnt, to retain it, that is necessary. And unlearning is very much essential along with learning.
Q. Gurudev, how can one deal with negative effects of formal schooling and mass media are sources of learning?
Sri Sri: You know, you can't avoid negative atmosphere, you only have to strengthen yourself so that you don't get affected by it. It's necessary. And how you strengthen yourself, you rise above that and see that every negative is a step towards something positive.
Q. Gurudev, why has the freedom of choice that is widely available to large number of people, not been able to bring happiness along with it?
Sri Sri: Happiness is with choiceless awareness, you must remember that. And whatever you choose, if you determine to be happy, then that is wisdom. There could be a million reasons to be unhappy, but if you can discard them and determine to be happy come what may, that shows your inner strength and you can do it.
Q. Gurudev, the students of the present time are hard-pressed by the competitive stress and self-centered concerns, how can they grow?
Sri Sri: Give them a broad vision about their life. Give them more education about what life is and a bigger purpose to life. Then they will not get so stressed in small things. We can teach them techniques to release the stress. This is very important. It's like you know dust come into your home, you know how to vacuum clean it, how to remove the dust from your home. You cannot just say 'Oh, the dust has come!’ Yes, dust comes, but you should know how to clean it. Right?! Yes. And those techniques are very essential to keep one's mind & heart free from stress.
Q. Gurudev, in the recent studies, it has shown that sharp increase in depression, OCD, psychosomatic diseases, how does meditation help in reducing or completely eliminating these?
Sri Sri: There are ample research on this topic, that it has proved again & again, meditation helps to uplift one's spirit, it has helped to rejuvenate body, mind & spirit, take one out of depression, there are number of scientific researches.
And we see this here everyday. Around the world, millions of people who have taken to Pranayama, Meditation, have come out of these psychosomatic illnesses. There could be some exceptions, but mostly, people have gotten out of their mental issues.
Maharishi Mahesh Yogi Ji’s Institute has done number of scientific researches, findings on meditation, how it helps people to come out of many of the psychosomatic problems. Like that, the Yoga Institute in many places, in Sudarshan Kriya, with Art of Living, there are number of research papers published on how this has helped millions of people across the world. The most recent is one with the troops, the war veterans, from Iraq & Afghanistan wars in America. When the troops came back, we had the program there called the 'Welcome Home Troops’ in America. And these young men & women who have been in Army, who been in the war field, had such deep trauma which they could not get over through medication. And when they did Sudarshan Kriya, what a miracle happened in their life is something to see to believe it. So they have made several documentaries on the experiences of such war veterans. So that is a big eye opener for the scientific community that Yoga & Meditation has a big role to play in combating health related issues that the world is facing today. It can become the best alternative way of treatment for depression, anxiety, OCD & all these attention deficiency syndrome, all these can be handled.

THOUGHT FOR THE DAY |
Many of you are yearning to get nectar (amrit) from Me. But of what benefit is it merely to swallow a few drops of nectar created by Me? It is when the satwik (pure) quality wins and subdues the rajasik and the tamasik (passionate and ignorant) qualities in the battles that go on in every heart, that amrit arises therein! This amrith that confers immortality must be won through your own spiritual practices (Sadhana). People practising meditation are taught an exercise called urdhva-drishti (upward vision) in which the two eyes are directed upwards, to a point between the eyebrows. Urdhva means upward and drishti means look, so the term means, not a mere physical exercise, but a lifetime of effort to direct your mind to avoid and abstain from lower desires, and to uplift itself to nobler thoughts. Such an effort will win amrit, it will flow from the spring of the heart! [Divine Discourse, Jan 11, 1968] |

You are total. You are full. You have all that you need. Do not underestimate yourself. A Guru is there to show you what you are. This is your possibility. You are this. You are not different from me. Whatever I am, that’s what you are, i.e. your highest possibility. And what is not possible, when you blossom in your highest possibility? All that you are craving for and hanging onto comes to you automatically anyway. But you have to let go. You are holding your fists tight. Why not open your hands and see that the whole sky is in them? You are closing your fist; even air cannot enter, let alone the diamonds. The process of opening the fist is what sādhanā and practices are for. That is what knowledge is.

4 Attitudes That Are Good To Have
Wednesday, 29. November 2017 Bangalore, India

Here are four attitudes that are good to have in life:
1
Friendliness
Being friendly, and more so with people who are happy. If you are not friendly with happy people, you will be jealous. This is because you think that your enemy is happy, and you cannot tolerate your enemy being happy. So, shake hands with happy people. Such an attitude does a lot of good to your mind.
2
Compassion
Be compassionate towards people who are miserable. If you are friendly with unhappy people, you will become unhappy. And if you become unhappy, you can never help them to come out of their misery. So, there is a different flavour of your relationship with them.
Many people have gotten into trouble by being friendly with unhappy people – both become miserable. It is like a doctor going to a patient who is sick, and the doctor also becomes sick. If the doctor also thinks – How can I alone be healthy? Let me also share the patient’s misery– then who will help the patient? So, what should be the attitude with people who are miserable? Compassion, not pity.
3
Happiness
For people who are doing good work or who are successful in the world, you should feel happy as though you are doing it. For example, someone is a good singer, singing and bringing joy to everybody, seeing him you should think, “I feel so happy that this person is singing so well, and making everyone happy.”
If someone is a good entertainer and he entertains everybody you should feel happy about it. If someone is a great architect and builds beautiful buildings you should feel happy about it. Whenever someone does a good job, share that happiness with them, we need to have this attitude.
4
Indifference
For people who are doing horrible things in the society, destroying themselves, we usually get angry at them. When you are angry, your mind suffers a huge loss. You lose so much energy; you lose your mood and your enthusiasm. When energy and enthusiasm goes away from you, you become angry and are no better than the other person. So, what should you do in such a situation? Have a sort of indifference in your mind.
For example, there are thieves in the world, they are there, what can you do about them? First accept and be indifferent. However, this does not mean you do not take any action. Your mind is indifferent (unaffected), but you act on it.
A strong mind can carry around a weak body, but a weak mind cannot even carry a strong body. These four attitudes will help you keep a strong and peaceful state of mind.

THOUGHT FOR THE DAY |
Some people, afraid of cynical criticism by unbelievers, are reluctant to walk the streets in groups singing the glory of God during early morning hours! When you have the very Embodiment of Fearlessness installed in your heart, why should the slightest tremor of fear affect you? You came into this world alone, with no companion, isn't it? During the years of life, you gathered wife and children, kith and kin, and friends and acquaintances who attached themselves to you. When you return to the realm from which you came, you enter it alone with no one to keep company. So too let the journey with Nagarasankirtan be. Come into the street alone, collect kith and kin if they come unto you, move with them unconcerned and unaffected, revel in your own sweet solitariness, and finally enter your home with the satisfaction that your job is well done. Fellows may laugh at you as insane but this insanity is infectious and very soon, even the irreverent will be initiated into the fold. [Divine Discourse, Jan 13, 1970] |

A Message on Dattatreya Jayanti - Gurudev Sri Sri Ravi Shankar
Sunday, 3. December 2017 Bangalore, India

Today is Dattatreya Jayanti. Birthdays are to remember the good qualities one possesses and celebrate them.
Dattatreya Symbolized the Guru Shakti
Atri Rishi had no children, so he adopted Datta. Datta means given, taken or adopted. That is why when one adopts a child, they say – Datta Svikara. So Atri and Anasuya had adopted a child who was called Dattatreya. He was special as he had Brahma Shakti (creativity), Vishnu Shakti (skill to sustain or maintain) and Shiva Shakti (skill to bring transformation).
Many people have creativity but they cannot sustain what they started. This creativity is Brahma Shakti. If you have Brahma Shakti, you can create things but you also need to know how to maintain it – that is Vishnu Shakti, which is the skill to maintain.
There are many people who are managers. They can’t create but if something is created and given to them, they do an excellent job in managing it. So, Vishnu Shakti is important; it is the energy to maintain what you create.
Then there is Shiva Shakti which is bringing transformation or newness. Many can maintain but whenever a change is needed they don’t know how to bring a transformation; how to take it to another level. So Shiva Shakti is essential too! When you have all these three qualities that is Guru Shakti! A Guru or a guide has to know all the three Shaktis.
Duttatreya is a symbol of Guru Shakti. He had the power of the guide, creativity, the skill to maintain and bring transformation, all in one!
Dattatreya Learned from Everything in Creation
Duttatreya learned from everything. He observed the whole creation and learned some lesson from everything.
Observation brings wisdom and you need sensitivity to observe. If you are caught up in your own world, you become insensitive to the messages coming to you from those around you. When people are caught up in their own stuff, they don’t see the other person’s point of view at all. And such people also believe their perception is absolutely right, even though you know their perception is incorrect.
There is a Mullah Nasruddin’s story:
Mullah Nasruddin thought he was dead and was very convinced with this fact. He began to deny everything with the argument that he was dead. If his wife said something to him, he would say, “How can a dead man reply?”
If she asked him to do any work, he would say, “How can a dead man do anything?”
So finally his wife got fed up and took him to a psychiatrist. After a lot of discussion, the psychiatrist asked Mullah, “Now tell me Mullah, will a dead body have blood?’
Mullah said, ‘No, blood becomes water.”
The psychiatrist’s face lit up and he took out a pin and pricked Mullah’s hand and blood came out. “Look Mullah, you are bleeding, so you are alive”, said the psychiatrist.
Then Mullah looked at the oozing blood and said, “You think you can fool me by your logic. Today I have discovered even dead people have blood!”
This is exactly what happens with people. They are convinced about their concepts and live in a small world and think that is it! Such people cannot learn anything. To learn it is important to open your mind and heart to receive the right knowledge.
In the Srimad Bhagavatam it is said – it is so interesting how he (Duttatreya)looked at a swan and learned something from the swan; learned something from a crow; from the trees and also from an elderly woman. For him, knowledge was flowing from all sides. He was so open in his mind and heart to receive knowledge and amalgamate it in the life.
An Occasion to Put Knowledge in the Front Seat in Our Life
If you are intelligent, you will learn from life and celebrate. Today, drawing inspiration from Duttatreya, let knowledge take the front seat in our life.
Everybody has knowledge, but sometime it takes the backseat. It is not in the driving seat. When knowledge is sleeping, it is ignorance. When knowledge is in the driving seat, there is only joy and celebration. Then we celebrate in every situation for life is celebration.
When we are in awareness, then everything in Creation gives us a message, gives us knowledge. And the purpose of this knowledge is to uplift our energy and enthusiasm; it is to make life a total celebration. We need knowledge to maintain and uplift our spirit of enthusiasm and positivity.

THOUGHT FOR THE DAY |
Despite the many Navaratris and Shivaratris (auspicious festivals) you attend at holy places, unless you illumine your heart and make it shine clear and pure, it will be shrouded in darkness, immersed in ratri (night) only. You may say that progress is possible only through My Grace, but though My heart is soft as butter, it melts only when there is some warmth in your prayer. Unless you make some disciplined effort and do some sadhana (spiritual activities), grace cannot descend on you. The yearning and the agony of unfulfilled aim melts My heart. That anguish (aavedana) wins grace. Sadhana must make you calm, unruffled, poised, and balanced. Your mind must be cool and comforting as moonlight, for Moon is the deity holding sway over mind. Be calm in speech, and in your responses to malice, cavilling and praise. [Divine Discourse, 13 Jan, 1969] |
-BABA |
Deep rest is the essence of sadhana. You have become so tired by doing something or the other all the time. Now just sit down for some time and to be with yourself. Do some meditation. When you meditate, you will start seeing a new world in front of you. You get deep rest is meditation. You get rest when you are content, and this rest is what gives rise to Happiness.
Running behind happiness makes you tired. When you run behind happiness you get tired, but when you repose in the self, when you rest, you get energy, and that brings you strength, joy and happiness. So every once in a while, stop the rat race, and take some time out to be with yourself, and get some rest. This is what knowledge is and this is what spirituality is.
Many time, in the name of sadhana also, we start engaging ourselves in some activity, and once again we get tired. I tell you, the physical body does not make you as tired as the mind does. Work doesn’t make you as tired as much as your desires. Nothing else makes you more tired than your own desires, or greed. So what is important is for you to become content. Again and again, be content. This is an art and this is what meditation is. True sadhana is to being calm, contented, and rested.

What SRI SRI said
In Satsang
1st December 2017 at the Art of Living International Center, Bangalore:
Q. Gurudev, I tend to talk a lot, at a stretch, however, I am not that good of a listener. How can I improve my listening skill?
Sri Sri: At least you have acknowledged & accepted that you talk for a long time, then you start talking less now. Usually, people who talk more don't even realize that they are talking more, they just get carried away with the flow.
Now since you have realized that you talk too much, so now start talking less.
Question: Gurudev, mahavir was a peaceful nature and he never raised arms, then why was he given the title of 'veer'?
Sri Sri: two powers, the power of a view and the power of a a. When the power of the scene gets so strong, the power of eminent personality is weak, then it is the condition of sorrow. Our environment is affected by others's influence, then we become sad. If the power of eminent personality increases, personality should be so strong to hold the power of the view, who will win the power of this maya with the power of his own self, he is the biggest heroic That is why ātmajñānī is that.
Question: what is the importance of knowledge in guru, service and what is its culmination?
Sri Sri: see, devotion, knowledge and service, the service of service, these three are going together.
If someone says I love so much but I don't do anything, it would be foul. The person who loves the country is something for the country. The person who loves God is something for the society. And if there is love and without knowledge, there can be an accident, there may be wrong. That is why knowledge is very important. Understanding knowledge, you will get success in whatever you start with your senses. The good work is also spoilt without a consciousness. That is why knowledge and karma and love, devotion, go along with this.

THOUGHT FOR THE DAY |
There is only one royal road for the spiritual journey - Love, love for all beings as manifestation of the same Divinity that is the very core of oneself. This faith alone ensures the constant presence of God with you, and endows you with all the joy and courage you need to fulfill your life’s pilgrimage to God. When the reservoir is full of water and you turn on the taps, then the buckets will be filled. Cultivate love and devotion, then your activities will be saturated with compassion and charity, and yield the golden harvest of joy and peace. Love must be unselfish and universal. You judge for yourself whether your love is narrow or broad, and whether your devotion is shallow or deep. Are you content with your achievement? Examine it yourself and pronounce the verdict on yourself, using your own discrimination. [Divine Discourse, Jan 13, 1970] |
-BABA |
Love is sharing; love is expansion. You can't but love, because you want to expand! And nature of life is to expand. But we have learned and cultured all our habits to restrain ourselves, and that is why the Divine Love is not manifesting in our life fully.

What SRI SRI said
In Satsang
30th November 2017 at the Art of Living International Center, Bangalore:

Q. Gurudev, I live in Australia, since Australia is in the southern hemisphere, does Jyotish and Vaastu change for my country?
Sri Sri: Vaastu can definitely change, Vaastu changes, yes. Jyotish also, yes.
Q. Gurudev, what is the scientific proof of the Law of Karma?
Sri Sri: Action and reaction, third law of Thermodynamics.
Q. Gurudev, how to tackle my internal conflicts of the mind?
Sri Sri: Pranayama & Meditation.
Q. Gurudev, how to let go of the criticism we face when we fail to be responsible?
Sri Sri: Take it. Take the criticism and see what you can improve on. You should just have this attitude towards criticism: when someone is criticising, they are doing it with a good spirit, they are your well-wishers. If the criticism is not coming out of that spirit, it is coming out of jealousy or small-mindedness, or anger or hatred, then you feel compassion for them, that's it. And if it is neither this, if criticism comes out of ignorance, then you just ignore that.
Q. Gurudev, how to overcome ‘culprit consciousness’?
Sri Sri: Overcome 'culprit consciousness’ by admitting it and by moving ahead from it. Just admit, 'yes, wrong has happened, and I will not do that again or let it not happen from me again’ and then moving further.
Q. Gurudev, how to work with people who manipulate us & lie to us?
Sri Sri: Skillfully! That needs more skill than working with someone who is straightforward. One who is so straightforward, you don't need much skill. But people with deceit, what you will do?
And first of all, I would like to tell you, don't label them that way. Are you sure with your perception or are they really doing such things? You should question. First, you should question 'Is my perception correct?’ Sometimes it can happen in your life that certain period of time whatever you see or say or perceive, turn out to be wrong. So, it is a time, it was not your intention, but your perception and your action appear to be lies. So similar cases would have happened with the other person also, you must remember that.
Such thing can happen to you in some period of time, these are all a lesson in your life that though you are truthful, you are right, it may appear to be the other way around. And you should just bear those things and not worry about.
Q. Gurudev, does spirituality & celibacy have any inter-relation? If yes, how, if no, why is celibacy held in high regard in spirituality?
Sri Sri: If you study Yoga Sutra you will understand. Celibacy is a happening, more than a practice, it is a happening. I have spoken about this in the book 'An Intimate Note To The Sincere Seeker’, just pick up that book and read on that.
Q. Gurudev, when I am the seer, what prevents me from experiencing this?
Sri Sri: Mind going outward & not turning inward.
Q. Gurudev, the tradition of Guru-Shishya (Master & Disciple) that is 'Sikh’, that comes through the ten embodiments of Guru Nanak, has the distinction of naam-simran, seva, and martial practice against oppression. As Indians, we owe a lot to the Sikh tradition & particularly to Guru Tegh Bahadur Ji & Guru Gobind Singh Ji. May Gurudev please put in perspective on the significance today of this path on day-to-day basis.
Sri Sri: Sikhism is one of the most broad-minded religion. When Sikhism began, they took the words & wisdom of many saints from Hindu & Muslim traditions, some Sufis, and saints, they took all the wisdom and they were woven into Guru Granth Sahib Ji. Some 15-16 great saints of India, who were there in different parts of India at that time, all their wisdom was taken & made into one Granth.
We must protect the purity of this broadmindedness. But later on people started becoming very narrow-minded even in this wisdom, then they are not doing justice to that path.
Yes, Guru Govind Singh Ji’s time, it was very very tough, they sacrificed their lives to preserve the diversity that is ‘India’! If the ten Gurus were not there, then what you call India may not have existed in this way. They have honored the traditions. Even today, the tradition of Guru Nanak Dev, his children Baba Shrichand Ji Maharaj, they have their own tradition. Shrichand Ji Maharaj, honored all the Vedas, they protected them, they continued them. Shrichand Ji Maharaj has continued the old tradition. So there is such a good relation between different streams of knowledge. That should never be allowed to become fanatic by any means. Fanaticism is no good at all for any religion. Fanaticism if enters in any religion, they take away the glow from that religion.
So, the purpose of religion is enlightenment, to uplift the human values. If that doesn't happen, then we have missed out on something very serious. People get stuck in the ritual, but fail to blossom in that ecstasy which Guru Nanak Dev Ji sings about.

THOUGHT FOR THE DAY |
Life must be spent in accumulating and safeguarding virtue, not riches. Listen and ruminate over the stories of the great moral heroes of the past, so that their ideals may be imprinted on your hearts. Nowadays, virtue is becoming rare in the individual, family, society and community, as well as in all fields, be it economic, political and even 'spiritual’. So also, there is a decline in discipline, which is the soil on which virtue grows. Respect one and all. Unless each one is respected, whatever be their status, economic condition, or spiritual development, there can be no peace and happiness in life. This respect can be aroused only by the conviction that the same atma (Self) that is in you is playing the role of the other person. See that atma in others, feel that they too have hunger, thirst, yearning and desires as you have; develop sympathy and the anxiety to serve and be useful. (Divine Discourse, Feb 22, 1968) |
-BABA |
Virtues have to be practiced till they become your nature. Friendliness, compassion and meditation should continue as practices till you realize that they are your very nature.
The flaw in doing something as an act is that you look for a result. When it is done as your nature, you are not attached to the result and you continue doing it. An action that arises from your nature is neither tiring nor frustrating. For example, daily routines like brushing one's teeth or bathing are not even considered actions because they are so integrated into one's life. You do all this without doership. When Seva is made part of your nature, it happens without doership.

What SRI SRI said
In Satsang
5th December 2017 at the Art of Living International Center in Bangalore:

The word for water in Sanskrit is 'apaha’, which also means Love. There is one word for love & water, in Sanskrit that is 'apaha’. And that's why, we call a dear one as 'aaptah’. That has the water element in it. We have to save our water bodies and keep it pure, this is everybody's responsibility.
Q. Gurudev, how do you make 'spirituality’ so simple (& easy to understand)?
Sri Sri: One who makes 'spirituality’ difficult, is not a Master at all. One who knows anything / any subject makes it simple and easy to understand.
If one who knows about any subject and tells you that it is difficult, then maybe they themselves do not know it. For example, if a cook tells you that cooking is difficult, then maybe he doesn't know how to cook. One who knows cooking will tell you that it is easy to cook.
If you have gained expertise in any topic, then you can make it easy and only then you can become a Teacher, a Master.
Q. Gurudev, it is said that in 'kalyug’, unity gives us strength. Does it mean that I alone cannot bring about a positive change?
Sri Sri: You can bring a positive change alone also. But if one refuses to work together with others and say that I will do it all alone, then it's not going to work. You should inspire others to join you & then collectively work will get down. That is why it is said that there is strength in being united.
Both are true, you can bring positive change alone also and by working in a group also.
Q. Gurudev, I find Bhagavad Gita confusing, will it be still beneficial if I just read it anyways?
Sri Sri: Yes, it will be beneficial, read it again & again. One should not stop reading Gita. Okay.

THOUGHT FOR THE DAY |
You may have witnessed chariot festivals (Rathotsavam) in pilgrimage centers. Huge temple chariots are gorgeously decorated with flags and festoons, stalwart bands of men draw them along the roads to the music of blowpipes and conches, and dancing groups and chanters precede it, adding to the exhilaration of the occasion. Thousands crowd around the holy chariot. Their attention is naturally drawn towards the entertainment, but they feel happiest only when they fold their palms and bow before the Idol in the chariot. The rest is all subsidiary, even irrelevant. So too in the process of life, body is the chariot, and the Atma is the Idol installed therein. Earning and spending, laughing and weeping, hurting and healing, and the various acrobatics in daily living are but subsidiary to the adoration of God and the union with God. What SRI SRI said
Gurudev Sri Sri Ravi Shankar inaugurated a 2-day River Rejuvenation Conference at the Art of Living International Center in Bangalore on 5 December 2017.
Speaking at the Conference Gurudev said: If there is one thing that is above you, below you, around you and inside of you other than God, it's water. If there is no moisture in the atmosphere we can't survive and to survive we depend on the rainwater, groundwater, rivers that are flowing above the ground & 70% of our body is water element. In this country (India) water is regarded as the Divine Manifestation.
What SRI SRI Inspired
India’s water crisis has escalated into a frightening situation over the past years. Multiple reasons have led to the drying up of important rivers of India. The natural process of renewing water resource in many river basins has been disturbed due to drastic use of land, deforestation, increased soil erosion, and siltation.
Consequently, perennial rivers have become seasonal and seasonal rivers have become dry. A notable change in rainfall pattern has also added to India’s water woes. There is a dire need to harvest rainwater and increase water potential both, on surface and sub-surface.
Unraveling the natural processes to revive the rivers, identifying the place and types of disturbances in this process and planning scientifically to revive them to their original flow is the concept of river rejuvenation project.
The Art of Living has been involved in comprehensive and eco-friendly planning and implementation of parts of river basins in Karnataka, Maharashtra, Tamil Nadu and other states. Five years of relentless efforts are yielding good results.

THOUGHT FOR THE DAY |
In fishing, the angler uses a rod and a line; that line has a float from which hangs inside the water a sharp hook with a worm. The fish is drawn by the worm to the hook, the float shakes, the angler feels the pull of the fish on the line, and he draws it on the land, where it is helpless and unable to breathe. Your body is the rod, your yearning or the eager longing is the line, your intelligence is the float, discrimination is the hook and knowledge is the worm; a clever angler thus catches the fish of the Divine (Atma)! When you get spiritual wisdom, you are drawn to the Divine (Kaivalyam). Kaivalyam is the state in which you experience the Lord as all-comprehensive, as Will, as Activity, as Bliss, as Intelligence and as Existence. To be firmly established in this Divine State, you must suppress your ignorance (tamas), sublimate your passions (rajas) and assiduously cultivate purity (sathwa). (Divine Discourse, Feb 26, 1968) |

What SRI SRI said
In Satsang
7th December 2017 at the Art of Living International Center, Bangalore:

Q. Gurudev, Vedanta is often taken to mean only Advaita Vedanta, could you please speak about Madhavcharya & devotion, how does Dvaita see Vedanta?
Sri Sri: There are many forms of Vedanta; Dvaita, Advaita, Vishishta Advaita, Shakti Vishishta Advaita, all these. If you are interested in it, you go deep and study. The essence is this: there are different levels of reality and they all coexist and they are all correct. On the level of Advaita, everything is gold, whether it is a bracelet, a chain or a ring. On the level of Dvaita, they are not the same. You can't put a bracelet into your ears or ring into your neck, right. So, on the utility, it is Dvaita, practicality: Dvaita; and on the value it is Advaita.
Q. Gurudev, I am a student and often I am confronted with the problem of too many choices, how do I decide when all options look good to me?
Sri Sri: Just relax. Drop the greed, maybe when greed is there, you feel this is better than that, then you get caught, you get more confused. Look into your abilities and listen to your own passion, yes, what is that you want to do and then go for it.
See in life ups & downs come, some things happen, some things don't happen, but at the end, only the truth will win, only the light will win. But in between stages you will see that which is not right, which also win, and we should not lose our heart to that. Hold on to that central point of your life, that is 'Satchidananda’, that is beauty, truth, and bliss.
Q. Gurudev, sleep is often associated with inertia, however, studies have shown that a lot happens over sleep. Could you please speak about what really happens during sleep?
Sri Sri: In deep sleep nothing happens that is why it is called sleep. (Laughs). And it is the most needed state for you. If you ask me physiologically, yes, your metabolism goes high, lot of activities happen in the body, you grow only in the sleep. If you don't sleep, you won't grow. In sleep you heal, healing happens in sleep. In sleep, you get rejuvenated. All these happen on one hand. On the other hand, nothing happens.

THOUGHT FOR THE DAY |
Millions recite the Lord’s Name, but few have steady faith! Fewer seek the bliss (Ananda) that contemplation on the glory of God within, the Atma, can confer. Some people complain that recitation (japam) has not cured their pain, grief or greed! It is because they mechanically recite prayers and meditate out of habit or for social conformity or to gain reputation for religiousness! When people who have learnt the precious scriptures revealing Atma-vidya (science of the Self) do not put into practice what they repeat orally and have no faith in the assertions, what profit can they get from it? The canker of doubt has undermined their reverential attitude to the scripture. They devalue the scriptures into money-or-fame-earning devices, and when they do not get money or fame through them, they are disappointed. They envy those who follow secular avocations. But if they only develop faith, scriptures themselves will foster them and ensure for them a happy and contented life. (Divine Discourse, Feb 23, 1968) |

What SRI SRI said
The Path to the Divine
The Divine can only be found in deep rest(Meditation).
Do you know what the obstacles to deep rest are? It is the cravings and aversions in the mind. If the mind is filled with cravings and aversions, rest is not possible. And if there is no rest, the goal of Sadhana (spiritual practices) cannot be achieved. That is why we need to be free from the cravings and aversions in our mind.
So, how do we do that?
'I don’t need anything from anyone', this is what we need to keep in our mind. When we don’t need anything from anyone, we will not have cravings towards anybody. When there is no craving for anybody, there will be no aversion to anybody. Let’s look at our aversions. Who are we averse to? Only those whom we think to be bad, isn’t it?
Don’t think of anyone as a bad person. There is no bad person in the world. If people do something bad, it is because of their ignorance or lack of awareness, or because their mind has been hurt. So, don’t have negative opinions about anybody.
If others have a negative opinion about you, it is their problem, not yours. From your side, do not consider anyone as bad. By doing this, your mind will be clear and pleasant and your intellect will be sharp.

THOUGHT FOR THE DAY |
Do not grieve, nor be the cause of grief. The very embodiment of Ananda (Bliss) is in you, as in others, as in all else. In spite of a multiplicity of containers, the contained is the same. That is the principle of Sat, Chit and Ananda (Being, Awareness, Bliss). The minutest atom and the mightiest star - both are basically one. All are, in truth, Brahman or Divine. You read in the sacred books that Lord Vishnu has the Garuda (Eagle) as His carrier, that Shiva has the Nandi (Bull) as His vehicle, that Lord Brahma rides on a Hamsa (Swan), that Lord Subrahmanya travels on a peacock, and that Shani has the crow as his vehicle. Ganesha rides on a mouse, though he is stupendously corpulent and has the head of an elephant! This does not mean that the Gods are helpless without these animals and birds as instruments of locomotion. It only reveals that no bird or beast is to be despised, for the Divine is using each as His instrument. Seen as deha (body), all are distinct; seen as dehi (the embodiment), Brahman, all are One. What SRI SRI said
Singing, Communication & Ego
There are three modes of communication: in head to head communication you talk, in heart to heart communication you sing, and soul to soul communication happens in silence.
When you meet with people, often you communicate from head to head. When you are with nature, you start singing, you communicate with nature from your heart. Often when you are with people you keep talking, blabbering, and you keep the communication on the level of the head only. But when you are with nature, you start humming and your communication comes through the heart. And when you are with the guru, you go blank and forget all the questions. Then communication comes through the soul in silence.
When you meet with people, you like to remain in the head, you seldom sing with people (other than when it is organised). Your ego obstructs you from singing. Many do not feel comfortable singing with people. When you sing with people then you descend to the heart level or feeling level. Some feel comfortable just listening to music. Some feel comfortable singing only when they are alone. Some sing to draw attention or to charm others. Some only want to join in when all the others are singing. All this singing comes from ego.
Bhajan means sharing, sharing from the deepest level of our existence. Bhajan is authentic sharing. If you could sing with people, then your ego shatters. Children can sing with people for they do not have ego. To sing with a stranger you have to be free of ego. Ego doesn't let you sing with a stranger. Head level is safe for the ego -heart level breaks the ego - soul level dissolves the ego. All communication gaps happen because of ego.
Exercise: when you are with people, rather then chatting just start singing and you can feel the shift of energy that is happening. If you want to have more fun, greet a stranger with a song

THOUGHT FOR THE DAY |
Your mind is too full of the world and your stomach demands too much of your time and energy. Desires and wants are multiplying faster than your capacity to satisfy them, and your dreams are far too fanciful, leading you into false victories and absurd adventures. Engrossed in the analysis of the material world, you have lost all sense of spirit, sweetness and sublimity. Under this new dispensation, truth is yet another word in the dictionary. Compassion is reduced to a meaningless travesty. People lack self-confidence. Even at the slightest provocation, you are rapidly transformed into a wild and vicious beast. Humility, patience, reverence - these are as invalid as a flameless lamp in the far distance. The only hope you have in today’s dreadful darkness is the name of God. That is the raft which will take you across this stormy sea, darkened by hate and fear, and churned by anxiety and terror. Take it with all earnestness and steadfast faith. "Give in such a way that the other does not even feel they have taken. This is generosity, and this is beauty.

Two Internal Tendencies
1. Taking from another
2. Giving to another
Which value system we are imbibing in our children is worth noting. If our children are hesitant to take or ask, then that is a sign of good values. But if they are hesitant to give, then there is something wrong there.
If people feel hesitation to put their hand out to take, that is a good sign, but if they hesitate to extend their hands out to help, then we need to change the direction society is going in. If a child is sattvic, s/he will always make an effort to share her/his belongings with everyone. But if the child is rajasic, then s/he tries to take things from everyone.
We Should Imbibe the Value of Sharing in Children
Children should feel happiness in giving and sharing, and hesitation in taking. They should feel hesitation to put their hands out and ask.
There are people who have enough, and yet they keep asking for more. This is very strange. So, when there is an attitude to give and hesitation to take or to ask, then the direction of life has reached an elevated level. If there is hesitation to give and no shame in taking, then, comparatively, that is of a lower level of existence. And there are some people who even go to the extent of pouncing, grabbing, and seizing, which is an even lower level of existence.
Now, in this world, there are all kinds of people and all sorts of things happen. So we must not hold anyone guilty or judge anyone. The important message is that we must set an example for others, but not make another feel guilty.

THOUGHT FOR THE DAY |
Spiritual striving (sadhana) will reveal the true identity of the Omnipresent Divine Self. But be careful; Sadhana can foster even pride and envy as a byproduct of progress. You calculate how much or how long you have done Sadhana and are tempted to look down on another, whose record is less. You are proud that you have recited or written the name of Lord ten million times; you talk about it whenever you get the chance so that others may admire your faith and fortitude. But it is not the millions that count; what matters is the purity of mind that results from genuine concentration on the Name. Your Sadhana must not be like carrying water in a cane basket! You get no water however often or long you walk. Each vice is a hole in the cane basket. Keep the heart pure and whole. You must also carefully cleanse from your heart malice, greed, hate and anger. [Divine Discourse, Jan 13, 1969] |

The 3 Types of Maya
Tue, 12/12/2017 Bangalore, India

What is Maya?
The word “measure” in English comes from the Sanskrit root word “Maya”. Maya means that which can be measured. So, saying, “All this is Maya”, means everything here can be measured.
Water can be measured, volume can be measured, temperature can be measured, distance can be measured, time can be measured, and so on. Everything in this creation is time and space, and both can be measured, and so it is all Maya.
What is not Maya?
What cannot be measured? Joy cannot be measured, love cannot be measured, life cannot be measured, so that is why these are not considered Maya.
Truth cannot be measured. Truth, consciousness, and bliss – this is what God is. What is God? “Sat” means truth, “Chit” means consciousness, and “Ananda” means bliss. God is truth, consciousness, and bliss – these cannot be measured. And this is what you are too! The nature of your spirit is bliss. Bliss cannot be measured, love cannot be measured, and that is what is not Maya.
What does it mean to be drowned in Maya?
When someone says, “You are drowned in Maya,” it means you are drowned in small little things that are not permanent, because Maya means that which is always changing. Ever-changing events and things around you is what Maya is. And if you are drowned in the ever-changing, and you are not logged on to the non-changing, life is very unstable. Stability comes when you log on to something in you that is not changing – that remains the same throughout time. That is termed as “getting out of the web of Maya”.
There is another meaning of Maya – that which has an appearance, but when you try to catch it, it doesn’t get into your hand. That is how everything in the world is. You see something so beautiful and you try to possess it. The moment you possess it, you find the beauty is gone. It is no longer where you thought it was. You think happiness is out there and you chase after that; when you get there, it is not there.
If you are stable, still, and content within yourself, then everything runs towards you. That is why I have said from the very beginning – If you follow joy, misery follows you; and if you follow knowledge, fun follows you.
There are three types of Maya:
1
Moh Maya
Moh Maya means attachment. When one becomes too attached to money, or children, such that it blinds them is called Moh Maya.
There are many people who go after money a lot. They don’t care for their wife, children, mother, father, friends, or any relationship, only money is important. And for money they are ready to do anything. They could even file a law suit on their own mother, prove her to be mentally unstable, or go to the extent of killing someone – this is Moh Maya.
Similarly, there are some people who keep crying for their children. They just want their child to be with them the entire 24 hours. They do not even understand what is good for the child. Doing this they spoil the child’s life and they also remain sad throughout their life, this is Moh Maya. That which does not bring you any great joy, but the absence of which causes you suffering is Moh Maya.
2
Maha Maya
Maha Maya is total ignorance. People who have no knowledge of spirituality (of that which is outside the realms of Maya).
People who are not on the spiritual path, what do they do? They wake up in the morning, brush their teeth, drink their tea, eat, run to work and do whatever they have to do there. Then they come back in the evening, eat a big meal and go to bed. That's it; their whole life is like that. They are not sensitive and they are not sensible. They are like stones. You don't find humanness inside of them, and they don't feel themselves either. They also don't feel anything about anybody. This is Maha Maya –deep darkness.
3
Yoga Maya
Then there is Yoga Maya – there is Maya even in Yoga, this is very fascinating.
Yoga Maya is the subtle inner experience of different divine powers or channeling that comes as you progress on the spiritual path.
Sometimes, what happens is, through continuous practice of Yoga and spiritual practices, some divine powers get awakened within oneself. When this happens, then you are able to predict what is about to happen in the future. You get an intuition about future events and occurrences, or you start channeling spirits. Some spirits come and start talking to you.
Now, if you are not completely hollow and empty from within, and if you still have some cravings and aversions, then that interfere with your intuition. Then the intuition will not be 100% true. 50-60% of it will come true and the rest turns out to be false.
Many times, Yoga Maya is really tricky because there is some 60-70% percent truth in it. I know of one lady who was a very good meditator. She got into Yoga Maya. She would channel different spirits who would tell her – don't do this and don't do that. She would tell this to others and many times it would come true. Once that same spirit came and told her, "Your husband is a diabetic, don't give him medicine he will be fine”. Listening to her inner voice she didn't give her husband his medicine and he became blind. That's when she came to me and I told her to stop listening to these spirits. So, this is what happens in Yoga Maya.
These are three types of Maya, and one has to cross over the three types.
Difference between intuition and Yoga Maya
Unless and until you are totally centered and hollow and empty, your intuition is always colored by your own cravings and aversions. When you win over these things then Yoga Maya is your friend and does not pose a challenge. That is why the Guru is essential because the Guru can guide you and tell you, “This is Yoga Maya”. Or he will say, “Yes, you are right.” So, without the Guru you cannot win over Yoga Maya. A Guru is very necessary.
Though Lord Krishna was born a Siddha (perfected being) he had to have a Guru and so he went to Rishi Sandipani. Lord Krishna says in Bhagavad Gita, "Mama maya duratyaya".
My Maya is very difficult to cross over but it can be crossed over only by my grace, and only through me one can cross over that. That's what he told Arjun.
So always be aware, be cautious of Maya. It can just come from somewhere and hold you in its grip, and the mind starts buzzing. Sometimes you have to snap out of that, and sometimes it also happens by grace.

THOUGHT FOR THE DAY |
The rosary (japamala) is very useful for beginners in the spiritual path, but as you progress, japa or repetition of the Name must become the very breath of your life, and so, the rotation of beads become superfluous. The practice should lead you to 'Sarvada sarva kaleshu sarvatra Hari chintanam', meaning, one should meditate upon the Lord always, at all times, and in all places. Just as you discard the belt after you learn to swim, and the crutches when you start walking, japamala is just a contrivance to help concentration and systematic contemplation. More importantly, have no thorn of hate in your mind, and develop prema (Love) towards all. Desire is a storm, greed is a whirlpool, pride is a precipice, attachment is an avalanche, and egoism is a volcano. Keep these things away so that, as you do japa-dhyana (meditative contemplation), they do not disturb the equanimity. Let love be enthroned in your heart. Then, there will be sunshine, cool breeze, and gurgling waters of contentment feeding the roots of faith. [Divine Discourse, May 10, 1969] |
-BABA |
Usually, we sit and contemplate on some knowledge, on some scriptures. We are keeping our mind active. The mind is thinking and thinking and thinking. Thinking is also an activity and does not bring any rest to the mind. So contemplation should never be called meditation.
Concentration involves a lot of effort. You are trying to focus your mind to stay in one place, which is not its nature. Mind jumps from one thing to another and it goes from something which is charming to something which is even more charming. Mind always flows towards something that is even more charming. When you are having very good food then you are attentive with the food. However when something on television comes or a beautiful scenery comes, you forget about the food and watch the scenery.
You mind goes from this to that. You mind always goes from one thing to another and it always goes to something that is more enjoyable. At least, it perceives that something is more joyful. It may not really be the source of joy. In fact, it is not.
Concentration is – trying to focus the mind on one point against its nature. So we are forcing our mind. Children get into so much stress and tension because their mind is forced on something which is not in their natural taste. They are forced to study such topics for which they have the least inclination. Then, it causes so much strain.
Concentration again is tremendous effort. So, it can’t be meditation. Though, you will need concentration in life. Now, both concentration and contemplation are results of meditation – they are not meditation itself. Meditation is effortless!
When the mind takes the deepest rest, it becomes so fresh and alive. And after that deep rest, your concentration is spontaneous. It’s natural. Concentration becomes effortless. You are able to contemplate well without strain. Meditation unfortunately is understood to be another concentration or contemplation in many parts of the world. But it is not. Meditation is the art of doing nothing. It’s the skill by which you make your mind become quiet and do nothing and experience the vastness of space deep within.
So, effortlessness is the key to meditation. And if we can do a few minutes of meditation, you will find that concentration has improved and your intellectual abilities are boosted.

How To Attract Grace Into My Life?
Thursday, 14. December 2017 Bangalore, India

Whenever there is victory, it is due to some grace. Whether it is victory in sports, in a lottery, in studies, in a competition, or in politics – all of it happens through grace alone. When a person forgets that and gets into ego, then it results in their downfall. So always remember that whenever and wherever there is victory, it is through grace.
What is Grace?
There is a commonly-used phrase – “God's Grace”. What does this mean?
Whenever you achieve something very significant that felt like it was beyond your capacity, which was worth having, but came to you not by your doing alone, that is Grace.
You feel, “I am not capable or qualified for this, yet I got this”.
When you recognize the Grace in your life, you feel very grateful, because you feel you have been bestowed with things that you were not worthy of. And this is the language of a wise person. A wise person never says, "Oh, I earned it. This is my right". When you think it is your right, you are getting what you got because of your right – there is no gratitude. Gratefulness is there when you feel that you got this not by your effort but because it was bestowed on you by Grace, as a gift. That brings gratefulness.
What is the Cause of Grace?
Grace is causeless and unmerited. It is not obtained through some merit or cause. Grace is received without any conditions. It is not that only after doing something you will receive Grace. If so, then that is not Grace – that is business. You are blessed with Grace just like that – without any conditions whatsoever. Grace is always there, just become aware of it and know that you are being showered with Grace.
Grace is something that can go inside even a closed purse. You don’t need to pay money to receive Grace. And if someone tells you that Grace will come to you only by opening your purse and giving money, then know that something is wrong for sure. God always blesses you in abundance. You need not pay money to receive it.
How Do I Attract More Grace in My Life?
1. The more grateful we become, the more we experience Grace in life. A mind that is complaining all the time cannot experience Grace. But one who is thankful and contented experiences more Grace in life.
2. We say that we want blessings and Grace. Blessings are available in plenty, but if your vessel is small, then what to do?
If you bring a tea cup and say, “Give me two liters of milk in this”, how can two liters of milk fit in the little cup? The cup is small and you are asking for too much. You need to bring a vessel with the capacity of three liters and then I can give you two liter or three liter, whatever you want.
So, you must remember that whatever you get is your capacity, and if you want to get more, then you must expand your capacity. When your capacity increases, more will definitely come to you.
How Do I Expand My Capacity to Receive More Grace?
· Just having the intention to increase one’s capacity itself does half the job.
· Be natural, simple, and humble. Humility from within naturally increases one’s capacity.
· Meditation, spiritual practices, service to society and knowledge.
· Shatt Sampatti (the Six Wealths or Six-fold Virtues)
o Sama (calmness of mind)
o Dama (self-control or restraint of the senses)
o Uparati (satiety)
o Titiksha (power of endurance)
o Shraddha (faith)
o Samadhana (equanimity or one-pointedness of the mind)
This is what you must focus on increasing more in your life. By enhancing these virtues, your capacity to receive blessings will increase.

Of what avail is it if you simply worship your choicest God’s name and form, without attempting to cultivate the samatwa (equal love for all) that God has, and His unruffled equanimity (shanthi), His abundant love (prema), His infinite patience and fortitude (sahana), and His ever-blissful nature (ananda)? In your lectures you elaborate on the incidents that are described as 'miracles' in books written on Me by someone as the unique powers of Sai. I request you not to attach importance to these. Do not exaggerate their significance; the most significant and important power is My selfless love (prema). I may turn the sky into earth, or earth into sky, but that is not the sign of Divine might. The abundant love that is universal and ever-present - this is the unique sign of Divinity. Do not fall into the error of considering some to be worthy of reverence and some unworthy. Sai is in every one, so all deserve your reverence and service! [Divine Discourse, May 17, 1968] |

What SRI SRI said
What makes a real holiday?
Rest and happiness make a real holiday. Often people go on a holiday and they come back tired and tanned, and needing a few more days to recuperate! A real holiday is that which energizes and does not wear you out. Remember, nothing energizes you like Wisdom.
· Doubts and complaints are impediments for rest.
· The moment you set out on your holiday, know that it has begun. Often people expect to find a pinnacle of happiness. Enjoy every moment of the journey as children do, do not wait for the destination.
· If you cannot be happy in one place, you cannot be happy in any other place. If you do not know how to row one boat you will not be able to row any other boat.
· To get maximum satisfaction out of your holiday you need to do something creative and engage in Seva.
· Do not ever forget to make meditation and prayer a part of your holiday.
If your days are Holy, then every day is a Holiday!

THOUGHT FOR THE DAY |
God is immanent in the world. So treat the world as lovingly as you will treat your Master. Serve, whatever be the obstacle or the cynical ridicule you may attract. The torture that his father inflicted to turn his mind away from God helped to bring out the unflinching devotion of Prahlada. The wickedness of Ravana served to reveal the might of Rama's bow. Traducers like Shishupala, Dantavakra, Ravana, and Kamsa are inevitable accessories of every incarnation. When you attempt to cultivate and share virtues, selfless love and fortitude, trouble and travail will naturally follow. You must welcome them, for without them the best in you cannot be drawn out. If gold was as plentiful as dust or diamonds as easily available as pebbles, no one would care for them. Remember, precious metals are won after enormous exertion and expense, that is why they are eagerly sought after forever! [Divine Discourse, May 17, 1968] |

The less you are attached to your virtues, the more self respect you have. If you get attached to your virtues, you look down upon everybody else, and the virtues start diminishing.
Non- attachment to virtues brings the highest self- respect.

What SRI SRI said
Intellect
It is the intellect which harbors inhibitions, likes and dislikes, approvals and disapprovals and it is again the intellect which harbors wisdom, which brings forth the intuition.
Q: Is intuition beyond intellect?
Sri Sri: Yes, but it moves through intellect. It's the intellect that lodges wisdom.
Q: Are emotion and intellect contradictory?
Sri Sri: They can be contradictory.
Q: When there is a conflict, which is better?
Sri Sri: There is no better conflict, in conflict. The pure intellect rises beyond conflicts. The pure intellect is not caught up in the emotional turbulence of the mind. Otherwise the intellect often gets coloured by the emotion and becomes impure like muddy water. Then it is unable to reflect the Self. Whereas pure intellect, still and serene, reflects the Self.
Q: Is intellect affected by Karma?
Sri Sri: Karma does not afflict the pure intellect. Liberation is purifying the intellect. The Sanskrit word for intellect is Buddhi and one who is liberated is Buddha.
