THOT of the Week for 3.16.2011  - Are We Created Equal?

Thomas Jefferson in the Declaration of Independence and Abraham Lincoln in the Gettysburg Address are both famous for declaring that, “all men are created equal.”  Perhaps more appropriately they should have said, “under the eyes of the law, and in the way that we treat one another, all people have the same rights, and all should be treated equally.”  As for everyone actually being created equal, well of course that is false.

Do you think the child who develops a deadly hereditary cancer was created physically equal to the lady who lived to be 118?  Do you believe that a boy born with no arms was created physically equal to Arnold Schwarzenegger?  Do you think someone with an IQ of 25 was created equal to Einstein?  Of course not.  Even identical twins can have very different appearances and health outcomes in life.  Part of what makes us unique and special is that we are absolutely not created equal; however, don’t let that stop you from being the very best YOU that you can be!

Recent findings in the field of genetic research note that your genetic blueprint accounts for only 30% of who you become.  That means 70% of who you turn out to be is up to you!  That’s exciting!  Every second of every minute of every day of your LIFE, your genes are being fed information through your nervous system.  Based on this information, your genes make decisions to turn certain characteristics, traits and abilities on or off.  Your LIFE experiences, your diet, your habits (good and bad), and the clarity of the messages getting to the genes and cells all contribute to you who become.

This explains why one identical twin may develop breast cancer while the other one doesn’t.  This also explains why your neighbor could have terrible health habits and outlive you.  We’ve all heard stories of people who seemed to do everything right health-wise but still died at a young age, like the 40-year old vegan who has a heart attack while jogging.  Yet because your quality and length of life are decided 70% by what your nerve system relates to your genes about your lifestyle habits, this man may have postponed a death that otherwise would have occurred at age 25 based on his genetics, simply by making those healthy lifestyle choices.

We can’t change the 30% but we can make the most out of the 70%.  So, get adjusted regularly to keep the master control system clear.  Exercise daily, get enough rest, eat well, and consciously enjoy LIFE.  In short, strive to be the best YOU that you can be.

While you are at it, help others be the best THEM that they can be.  Share your experiences about chiropractic care with others.  Take an extra handout, forward this email, or FaceBook post a message to your friends… together we can make the world, or at least DownRiver, a better place in which to live.

-Happy St. Pat’s!  We’ll see you soon.  –Todd and Kelly
