There seem to be many upsides to living in a modern, high-tech society, but as with most things in LIFE, there is also a downside:  all the environmental toxins.  Many of these toxins are things that we cannot see, smell or feel.  Many times we even don’t realize we are being affected until we come down with a chronic disease after perhaps years of subtle exposure.  It is hard to ignore the overall impact on society given the increasing numbers of cancers, immune system disorders, neurological problems, chronic fatigue syndromes, chemical sensitivities, allergies, and hormonal disturbances affecting us today.  A study in the British Medical Journal estimates that 75% of cancers are caused by environmental lifestyle factors, including our exposure to various chemicals.  A separate report by the Columbia University School of Public Health estimates that 95% of cancers are caused by a combination of our diet and our exposure to environmental toxicities.

According to Joseph Mercola, an expert in the field, over 77,000 chemicals are produced in North America, and more than 10,000 of these are chemical solvents, emulsifiers, and preservatives that are used in food processing.  These chemicals are eventually absorbed into our groundwater, rivers, lakes, and oceans; some are spewed into the air; and many are added--quite intentionally, to our food supply.  For most of us here in North America, the following toxins are the typically most prevalent:

1.      PCB’s (polychlorinated biphenyls):  Although banned for decades, former use still contributes to water pollution.  Most farm-raised salmon are fed fish that have absorbed PCB’s.

2.      Pesticides:  Many anti-pest residues are commonly found in and on our food.

3.      Phthalates:  Chemicals used to lengthen the life of fragrances (perfumes and colognes) and also to soften plastics which are then often used to store our food.

4.      VOCs (volatile organic compounds):  Found in carpet, paint, and cleaning fluids.

5.      Dioxins:  Caused by burning waste or fuel.

6.      Asbestos: An old insulating material, now banned, but releases fibers into the air as it ages.

7.      Heavy metals: Arsenic, mercury, lead, and aluminum accumulate in the soft tissues of the body.

8.      Chloroform:  Used to make other chemicals-- and is formed when chlorine is added to water.

9.      Chlorine:  Found in household cleaners and used in some industrial processes.

These are just some of the environmental toxins that might interfere with our body’s natural ability to heal itself and function properly.  As we remove interferences (including subluxations and un-natural chemicals) our body experiences less stress and our health can’t help but to improve naturally.  While it is impossible to avoid all toxins and interferences, the following list may help to limit exposure:

      -    Get adjusted regularly, to correct subluxations and remove nerve-transmission interference.

-         Eat less processed food and more organic produce and free-range, organic animal products.

-         Consume a high-quality purified fish or cod liver oil instead of eating contaminated fish.

-         Avoid artificial additives including preservatives, artificial sweeteners, and MSG.

-         Use natural detergents, cosmetics and toiletries. Again: natural-good, unnatural-bad!

-         Consider using ceramic dental fillings instead of metal fillings-they contain mercury.

-         Avoid using air fresheners, perfumes, cologne, dryer sheets, and fabric softeners.

-         Get safe sun exposure- use shade or cover up with clothing rather than slathering sunscreens.

-         Wash store-bought food.  Also, test your tap water and install filters if necessary.

-         Limit the intake of drugs: both prescription & over-the-counter, either injected or digested.

LIFE doesn’t last forever—well, maybe LIFE will, but lives do not.  We can’t hang around forever as we each have our own circle of LIFE to complete.  What we can do however, is MAXIMIZE the QUALITY of the LIFE that we experience as we remove as many interferences as possible.
