I've uploaded my current setup in the Files section, as usual. It's
not a very stable setup, but it's fast. Not sure if I would use it for
the race though, might just sacrifice speed for safety. It takes about
2-3 laps before the car handles better, it seems difficult to build
enough temperature in the tires quickly.

I have never found any files section. Where is it?

Here (just like in Screamers group), there's a menu on the right.
There's a Files section in that. But anyway, here's a direct link:

http://groups.google.com/group/thor-online-league/files

Perhaps there are settings that can hide that menu, not sure.

Offhand it looks like I am not signed in, but I don't see any "sign in" link
either. Only a subscribe link. I was under the impression I WAS subscribed
already so what am I supposed to do? There is a menu on the right, but
nothing about Files. I DID get to the page in your link below, though..

OH! I almost forgot... THANKS for the direct link! Sorry I forgot to say
that in the last email! :-)

You need to be signed to your gmail I suppose. I'm constantly signed
so whenever I open the groups it has me signed as well and that
probably gives me more options here. Give it a go.

As far as the subscription goes, I think it's only about allowing you
to post and receive messages, and you can do it by using any e-mail,
so yeah, I guess you need a gmail or generally, a Google user account,
to make this work.

I have Outlook getting my gmail, so I never actually sign in. Not even sure
of the password atm, lol. :-O.

I believe we have really zeroed in on the road course setup, but it is for
sure that the loss of aero when following another car is drastic. That's why
my car mysteriously just pushed right off the high speed kink when folowing
Oliver at Elkhart Lake on lap 1! On the other hand I have discovered that
the aero setup is too tight when using a wing over 36 degrees in back and 31
in front. (I had a 26/40 setting, lol) The max setting of 31 in front is 30
degrees, while the rear wing goes to 44, which cannot be used, nor even 40.
However, the mechanical grip at the rear is roughly the same as at the
front, (which is too little, btw in should have more to allow the power to
be applied). It needs to be balanced. It is almost impossible, (due to the
flaws in the mod), but low camber at the rear works. I won't publish my
setup, for now, but the race setup is very fast and should last the full
run. Shawn did mid 1:06s with the qual version, and low 1:08s with the race
setup, so it is fast, but also very solid now. Still possible to spin with
an error though, like too much throttle in the wrong place with the wheel
turned, lol, but it is finally a balanced setup that you can get sideways
off even a high speed turn, and keep it together. If everything goes well in
the first race I will send it out for race two, hehe. ;-)

The wing angle doesn't really matter much, what's more important is
how much actual downforce rF applies for each degree of wing settings
and that's down to how they set up the .HDV of the mod. In the end, it
doesn't really matter what angles you use as long as you find a good
balance. I agree the road course setup is a bit restricted, but then
again, I have no idea how it was in reality. As for camber, I mostly
judge it for tire temps and secondary, for car handling. My simple
rule is more negative camber at the rear = more stability (and
understeer) in corners, especially high speed.

I don't mind sharing setup, first of all I doubt many would really
like it and second, we have too few people so I don't see a reason not
to share a setup and encourage more of us to participate. But after
what happened at Milwaukee, I understand why you're reluctant to share
the setup, Dave. :D

Cheers,

hey fellas
couple of quick questions here:
what's time change between GMT and EST?
do these races start at 3:30pm local or 4:30pm?

the races are 27 laps....
are we obliged to make a pit stop?
if i start with 15 laps worth of fuel,
will it add that automatically when i make the stop?
do the change tires automatically?

anything else i should know
before trying to race?
really just wanna try this out and see
if i have everything set right...

thanks,
simon

Well, in this case it does, as I am a modder from way back, and I designed
this setup based on the info in there. An actual aero balance is with the
front set at 31 and the rear at 32 degrees, making them more or less equal
in DF. However, that is too loose, because the rear tire grip is incorrect.
They put NASCAR tires on this car, lol. Barely any difference in grip for
the rears, so much had to be done to improve the rear grip to get it to be
balanced, and as it turns out, 36 degrees was needed at the rear. Any more
and the car is actually too aero tight, and it will show up badly if you are
following someone through a high speed turn like the kink at Road America.

As far as the camber is concerned, lower works better in both the rear and
the front, and allows you to catch the car when it steps out also. I am
using -2.5 in front, and -1.7 at the rear, with a caster of 4.9 degrees.

I decided I will attach my race setup here anyway. Maybe it will help Simon
or someone like that. I hope to see you there, Simon.

I didn't know you could attach files, I guess it works if you send e-
mail directly to the groups addy. :)

Well, I'm not sure what exactly you mean by "aero balance", because
there's no need to have equal downforce front and rear, regardless of
tires. The car is not 50/50 distributed in weight either. It's quite a
matter of personal preference and tire temperature and wear
management, above all. Personally I can't handle anything under 40
rear wing in the AAR car without lowering the front wing angle as
well. For sure, following another car causes massive understeer, but
setting up the car to cope with this (false) effect is not practical.
Hopefully they'll fix it in the next release.

As for the grip, a bigger rear tire doesn't necessarily provide more
grip, but is rather less load sensitive and gives better camber
thrust. As far as pure coefficient of grip goes though, it's just a
property of the rubber compound. I agree the modders need to work some
more on the way the tires handle, but IMO it's not just about
increasing the grip levels. Haven't taken a look into the mod physics
in detail to be able to say more.
