Dead in the Water Thonny for Mac crashes just looking for plugins

Hello, as soon as I select "Install from local file" by clicking the here text in the plugin menu, Thonny crashes immediately.  I have deleted and re-installed the app, gave Thonny complete file access, updated all system and app software on computer and rebooted several times and it crashes every single time.  Same behavior everytime the 1st time I click on here, nothing happens, I click a 2nd time and the crash reporting screen pops up with options OK and ReOpen.  

I am new to Thonny but need to use it to program some robotics. I need this certain plug-in for a program, but I cannot get past selecting the option for loading from a local location as opposed to the "store" they have.  

Any advice??  I do not know what else to try at this point. I am really LOST !!!
