TheMagicians is an American fantasy television series that aired on Syfy and is based on the 2009 novel of the same name by Lev Grossman.[2] Michael London, Janice Williams, John McNamara, and Sera Gamble serve as executive producers. The first series premiered on December 16, 2015, as a special preview, and the fifth and final season ran from January 15 to April 1, 2020. In the show, students at a secretive school of magic find that the magical world is more dangerous than they realized.

Quentin Coldwater enrolls at Brakebills University for Magical Pedagogy to be trained as a magician, where he discovers that the magical world from his favorite childhood book is real and poses a danger to humanity. Meanwhile, the life of his childhood friend Julia is derailed when she is denied entry, and she searches for magic elsewhere outside of the school.

Michael London first optioned the books in 2011,[24] intending to develop the show for the Fox Broadcasting Company.[25] X-Men: First Class co-writers Ashley Miller and Zack Stentz wrote the pilot, but did not get the green light. London then redeveloped the pilot with McNamara and Gamble taking over writing duties, and took the script to Syfy, which ordered a pilot. The pilot, directed by Mike Cahill, was filmed in New Orleans in late 2014 and wrapped in December.[3][26] Syfy picked up the show for a 13-episode first season, to be aired in 2016. McNamara and Gamble became executive producers.[27]

Series production began on August 4, 2015, in Vancouver, and it was announced that Olivia Taylor Dudley had replaced Sosie Bacon as Alice Quinn. It was also announced that Rick Worthy had been cast as Dean Fogg, Anne Dudek as Professor Sunderland, with Esm Bianco also cast.[6] Syfy aired an advance commercial-free screening of the first episode on December 16, 2015, ahead of its January 25, 2016, premiere, when it was shown along with the second episode.[28]

The show was renewed for a second season in February 2016,[9] and the second season premiered on January 25, 2017.[29] On April 12, 2017, the series was renewed for a third season of 13 episodes, which premiered on January 10, 2018.[30][31] On February 28, 2018, the series was renewed for a fourth season of 13 episodes, which premiered on January 23, 2019.[32][33] On January 22, 2019, Syfy renewed the series for a fifth season, which premiered on January 15, 2020.[34][35][36] On March 3, 2020, Syfy announced that the fifth season will be the series' final season.[37]

The first season received positive reviews. On Metacritic, it has a score of 60 out of 100, based on 24 reviews.[38] On Rotten Tomatoes, it has an approval rating of 74% based on 47 reviews, with an average rating of 6.7/10. The site's critics' consensus reads: "The Magicians' impressive special effects and creative storytelling help compensate for a derivative premise and occasionally sluggish pace."[39]

Some critics and fans criticized the show for its brutal depiction of Julia being raped and that, after having survived being raped, she develops extra magical powers[40][41][42] and betrays her friends by allying with a murderer who is also a rape survivor. Lisa Weidenfeld of The A.V. Club stated: "the show has now suggested that the two victims of sexual assault are its villains".[43]

The second season received positive reviews. On Metacritic, it has a score of 74 out of 100, based on 5 reviews.[44] On Rotten Tomatoes, it has an approval rating of 91% based on 22 reviews, with an average rating of 8.06/10. The site's consensus reads: "A clearer sense of purpose and extra helpings of cynicism and danger lead The Magicians to a higher level of engagement."[45]

The third season also received positive reviews. On Rotten Tomatoes, it has a 100% approval rating, based on 11 reviews, with an average rating of 8.4/10. The site's critical consensus reads: "Surprising and wildly entertaining, The Magicians' third season has more than enough tricks up its sleeve to keep viewers under its spell."[46]

The fifth season also received positive reviews. On Rotten Tomatoes, it has a 100% approval rating, based on 10 reviews, with an average rating of 7.87/10. The site's consensus reads: "Following an uncertain finale, The Magicians recuperates with a fifth season that pushes forward without losing where it came from."[53]

The first season of The Magicians was released on DVD and Blu-Ray on July 19, 2016, in Region 1.[75] The second season followed on July 11, 2017, followed by the third season on July 10, 2018, the fourth season on July 9, 2019, and the fifth season, as well as a complete series box set, on July 14, 2020. Each release included all thirteen episodes, as well as special features.[76]

The Paper Magician starts with the nineteen-year-old Ceony Twill being forced into an apprenticeship with the Paper Magician Emery Thane. She had wanted to study a different form of magic, but because there is a lack of paper magicians in Victorian England, she is told she gets paper or nothing. A romance begins to flourish until Emories heart is ripped out of his chest and stolen by his ex-wife. Ceony set on an adventure to recover the heart before the paper magician dies.

I love the idea of the magic system based on man-made materials. I also love the gradual development of the love story. Mrs. Charlie is an extremely detailed write and everything in the book is vivid in your imagination. It is truly fun to read. Unfortunately, I had some problems with this book as well.

The Glass Magician starts out a few weeks later after The Paper Magician ends. We see that the romance has progressed, but then suddenly in the book, it is questioned and doubted for no apparent reason. The friends of the villain in the first book are now after Ceony and for some reason, none of the magicians, including Emery Thane, thinks she should be involved in meetings about her own safety or that of her family. So, of course, as in many books of this type, she takes matters into her own hands and screws everything up before fixing it all.

The last book, The Master Magician, jumps ahead a year and a half to went Ceony needs to test to become a full magician. Since the love story has progressed to a series of sexual near misses, Emery Thane thinks she should test with a magician who hates him. During this time, the one remaining living villian escapes a prison transfer, and Ceony becomes obsessed with tracking him down.

A New York Times bestselling series set in a world where magic is dying, following a modern-day thief who is tasked with traveling back in time to 1902 New York City to stop a magician from destroying the future.

There are three books in between (Daughter/Servant/Mistress of the Empire) that I was unaware of. Can I skip these three books and come back to them later? What will I miss? (if it's possible to answer without spoilers anyway!)

One of the nice things about the Krondor series, is that most of the books fall into specific time periods, that tend to be many years apart. Well, there's a trilogy in the same time period, but different trilogies will fall apart.

I believe that it is possible to read the Legacy trilogy without missing a significant amount from the Empire series. There will be a few key points that you will lack some understanding, especially in the first book (Betrayal at Krondor), if you haven't read the Empire series first.

So, in short, if you can get a hold of the other books somehow first, then you will be better off as a whole, but if you can't, you won't miss too much, but might have a few problems understanding a few things that occur.

The series discusses the Riftwar but from the other side of the Rift on the planet Kelewan. A world of intrigue, magic, treachery and duty, it is an absolute pleasure to read. The stories revealing why and how the people of Kelewan came to be invading Midkemia and the underlying secrets of how and why the culture of Kelewan was the way it was.

Told from the point of view of Lady Mara of House Acoma, the story is rich in political intrigue and cultural development and definitely worth the effort both for the quality of the writing and for the addition to one of the finest magical sagas to ever hit the page. I have a preference for the earliest books of the Riftwar and these tales and consider them the best (the first seven) of the entire series.

I haven't read the Magician set of the Riftwar books, but I have read the Empire books. Each book doesn't stand on it's own so well, but in general, the trilogies stand alone (I read Empire with no knowledge of the rest of the Riftwar saga, it all made sense)

I'm sure long past now you've made the decision (this topic is 4 years old as I type this), but for anyone else wondering the same thing, the "Empire" books can if you want be completely ignored and never read at all. They don't affect the main series at ALL, even though the main series affects them very strongly.

After showing viewers how, among other things, a magician can escape from a coffin after being buried alive, Montano ended the special by peeling off his black mask and giving a brief testimonial, saying that his specials have helped make magic a more accessible art form to all.

Spencer, who performs with his wife, Cindy, says the specials forced the duo to scrap two of their tricks, the Shadow Box (in which Cindy slowly materializes into an empty box) and the Houdini-inspired Chinese Water Torture Cell.
