Assuming finding a newer SCSI card is not possible, you could go ahead and use the small footprint version of Linux you have proposed. Linux accesses SCSI controllers directly so int13 extensions aren't needed providing the boot partition is at the start of the disk, and it will ignore any disk overlay software like Ontrack anyway. Of course native Linux only works on 386 or later machines (486 or later for recent versions), which are considered to be newer machines. If your machine really is ancient (286 or older) then you'll have to use a different port of Linux like ucLinux, which may or may not have drivers for your SCSI card (I'm not sure whether they have to port drivers separately.)

That's the whole point of an Option ROM BIOS, to provide those services. Even in an IBM 5150 (whose system BIOS contains no fixed disk services at all), you can use XTIDE Universal BIOS in a boot ROM socket to provide INT 13h services.

A few hours ago, my hard drive started beeping and clicking. I had Ubuntu 14.04 installed on the hard drive, and then it suddenly started doing the beeping and clicking. The Ubuntu OS froze up, so I rebooted and it couldn't boot back into Ubuntu. Then I booted into my internal disk, which had Windows 7. It wouldn't recognize the disk except in the device manager. I tried diskpart and SeaTools, but diskpart wouldn't detect any Seagate drive, and SeaTools started hanging and using up a ton of CPU when it was started with the drive plugged in. Also, when I rebooted/booted my computer up, it would hang, and if I try to plug in the drive after it passed the bios logo, the computer would go really slow. My computer (laptop) is a thinkpad t440p. what I should do, and is my hard drive really dead? (BTW I BOUGHT THIS HARD DRIVE 3 MONTHS AGO)

However, it feels like only one of them is the boot-disk, and that one is the broken one. The system does not fix a new boot-disk on my new disk, but decides just to stop. This is typical of MMP linux systems, that companies uses to get something out quickly.

So far, the Seagate drive has only worked once, when I first plugged it in* (usb3 slot). (*After boot). It automounted, and its files were displayed in thepcmanfm file manager. By automount, I mean when the small window appears andsays something like "Do you want to open this device in file manager".

It also offers services such as disk clone, bootable media building, mount/dismount images, universal restore, etc. Besides, MiniTool ShadowMaker enables you to sync your files to two locations and keep them in pace.

Thanks for your reply. Yes, apparently windows is using the RAID driver for both the boot disk and this disk. I downloaded the Seagate disk wizard and when I run the the wizard both disks show interface type of RAID, however, the Toshiba 2nd drive shows 1.277 TB size. Are you saying that if I return the Toshiba drive and buy a Seagate 8tb drive, the Seagate wizard would then see the full 8tb even with the interface type of RAID ?

My solution was to use G-Parted live CD. The PC is set to boot from it. It boots a slim version of LINUX OS with some handy utilities like G-Parted disk management. G-Parted allows you rectified the Intel/Microsoft HD 2TB limitation silliness in less than a beep, then the system is rebooted normally with the bigger than 2TB drives showing their true colors thru.

You may indeed need to modify the boot.ini on the USB device, especially if the original hard disk is present in the machine. The boot.ini defines which drive, etc, the boot area is on, and the local hard disk is always going to be the first device, if present, even if you boot from USB.

If so there is perhaps an easier alternative. As pointed out earlier if you are boot EFI then this will not work at all and your second disk method is the way to go. Google up EasyBCD and install it. In the lower half of the ADD NEW ENTRY menu is an entry that you can add an entry to an ISO for. A lot of ISOs work, some wonky ones won't. Add your ISO to the BCD menu and make sure you have the boot countdown enabled on the EDIT BOOT MENU of EasyBCD. Your Win PE or whatever ISO you add now becomes a selection on your Windows boot menu. I have it this way on all my systems and boot to my Win PE ISO for backups or maintenance as well as a few other ISO for other stuff.

  • Consolidate as many diagnostic tools as possible into one bootable CD. Wouldn't you like to avoid digging into the dusty box to look for the right floppy disk, but simply run them all from a single CD? Then the Ultimate Boot CD is for you!
