This Place Will Become Your Tomb (from now on referred to as TPWBYT) is the sophomore studio album from the anonymous collective known as Sleep Token, set to release on the 24th of September, 2021.

“Alkaline” was the first single presented on the album. It’s both powerful and angry, with harsh key lines creating a warning in the opening sequence. Once it gets going, there is no stopping tis runaway locomotive…it burns everything in sight, with vigorous and weighted tones wrapping up the song. “Distraction” goes the other direction, with charming piano notes and thoughtful vocals…talking about being broken into fractions. It’s a soft and charming song, with everything coming together at the end, and I believe he is saying “It’s too late for me.” “Descending” is probably about one slowly slipping into the bowels of the earth. It begins with a steady pulse of keys and ethereal vocals. Harmonized vocals come in next, while percussion puts accents into the mix. It fades away with darker tones.

SLEEP TOKEN have announced a brand new album!
With the success of their debut album, Sundowning, people are eager to see where Vessel and his followers take their sound, as well as see how they expand the lore of their universe.

The ever enigmatic Sleep Token have just announced details of their second album, ‘This Place Will Become Your Tomb’, out on September 24th 2021 via Spinefarm Records.
Unfortunately, the bad songs start to outweigh the good. For all their posturing, Sleep Token often seems like they want to be mainstream stars. There’s no other explanation for a song like “Fall For Me”, an acapella exercise in autotune that sounds closer to Drake than anything heavy. “Distraction” could easily be by Imagine Dragons. It’s a bold move to try and hit both audiences at once. But it’s doubtful that many metalheads will enjoy Sleep Token’s attempt.

The campaign saw each track from the record released in succession, once every two weeks exactly at sundown UK time, allowing locally-based fans to watch the sunset as they listened to a brand new Sleep Token jam. Given the erratic and varied nature of their sound too, it made the experience that much more enthralling. What kind of tune will we get this week? A djent banger? A piano ballad? A song about shagging? There was no way to truly know what was coming next, and it was one of the most exciting and involved album release experiences I’ve ever been a part of.

“Atlantic” leads off the album. Soft, charming piano notes open the song. Vessel’s vocals are quite poignant, singing about “bodies buried in the water.” A sad affair, it rolls forward with the simple but potent melody, then in comes the heavy tones to make sure those bodies are buried deep. It ends with the lyric line “don’t wake me up.” “Hypnosis” begins with much heavier and angrier tones, and some really nice drum lines. The mood is dark and somber. The beefy guitar parts are nearly enough to wash away the sentimental vocals, as it goes deeper and darker towards the end. “Mine” features much fluffier tones, and even what sounds like some Eastern instruments. “You will be mine” he vows. Big accents usher in an engaging melody line.

On the live front, Sleep Token are due to headline the second stage of Download’s pilot event this evening. A moment in history, Sleep Token’s performance will be a special occasion for music fans. Additionally, Sleep Token will perform at ALT+LDN this year, set to take place on August 30 at London’s Clapham Common. The band will be performing alongside acts such as Playboi Carti, Architects, Machine Gun Kelly & Princess Nokia.
“Telomeres” sounds like the easy tones coming from a smoky jazz club long after most patrons have gone home for the morning.

The composer is lost in the nuances of his composition while only a few of the patrons are able to let themselves free to get lost in the charismatic song. Just when you think you may have heard it all from the band…”High Water” opens with a grim landcape, with eerie keyboard notes and terse vocals. As it moves on, guitars and drums join the fold, and it begins to build into a more compelling and dynamic sound, ending on harsher but still melodic tones that stir your senses. “Missing Limbs” closes the album. The contrast between the title and the sound presented is quite stark. It’s another beautiful song that just hollows you out. A last gasp of humanity perhaps? I don’t know, but it lingers in your palate long after it’s over.

There is one problem for SLEEP TOKEN as they prepare to release their second album. Sundowning. Their debut was so rapturously received that it almost seems impossible to follow. So many bands have fallen victim to the curse of the sophomore album over the years, but surely if anyone is capable of living up to expectations, it’s our favourite masked virtuosos. Achingly close to releasing This Place Will Become Your Tomb, tension is palpable among their adulant fanbase, a collective that has deified the band to an extent almost unheard of at such an early stage in their career.

Each offering had its own emblem, establishing the Sleep Token universe on the debut album Sundowning. This June 18, 2021, the cycle begins again but born anew. The new album This Place Will Become Your Tomb, pushes the boundaries of Sleep Token’s sound into new avenues of blurring genres while still retaining the signature sound.
“Like That” is another song that seamlessly blends shadowy tones with more ethereal ones. The electronica keeps the song in the murky territory, while the expressive vocals offer more eloquent tones. “Do you like that?” he muses.

“The Love you Want” was the second single released on the album, and the haunting but pretty melodies still linger on my conscious. The video is quite dark, with Vessel presumably taking his life at the beckoning of the lead dancer. It’s such a beautiful song…genres be damned. “Fall for Me” is unabashedly Pop sounding, with vocals and keys playing in unison, with no other instruments. Again, it’s absolutely gorgeous, Though short, it lasts a long time in your memory.

The UK underground entity only known as Sleep Token, fronted by Vessel, began the Sundowning ritual June 20th 2019 with ‘The Night Does Not Belong To God’. Sleep Token began to release their ‘offerings’ bi-weekly, released Thursdays at Sundown BST with accompanying visualizers.

Life is indeed “like a box of SLEEP TOKEN…you never know what you are going to get.” These words are staggering, and prophetic. The album is full of diverse offerings that truly defy genre labels, in every sense of that phrase. It’s clear that the vision the composer(s) have for the band is crystal clear for them, but perhaps not so much for the listener. Herein lies their well-guarded secret. Their music is very personal, and that shines through brighter on this album than on “Sundowning,” which still had many memorable moments on it. Vessel’s lyrics come from multiple places it seems…from hurt, from loss, from love (forlorn or realized), even from the sad state of humanity. You either know and love this band, or you are a sheep…forever slave to the grind of the Metal music industry. Awaken. Divert. Relinquish. Worship.

Beneath the Sleep Token banner, lies the unique, broad-based vision of one individual – anonymous, silent, masked, armed with a staggering vocal range, a deft touch on the keyboards, plus a live approach that is never less than fully engaged.

This new 12-track offering delves further into the enigmatic universe of Sleep Token, pushing boundaries and blurring genres, whilst retaining their signature sound.
To coincide with the album announcement, SLEEP TOKEN have also released the first single with an accompanying music video from the album; Alkaline.

Fall for Me will join the previously released “Alkaline” and “The Love You Want” on the highly anticipated second album from Sleep Token, This Place Will Become Your Tomb.
Sleep Token has certainly put a lot of work into its image. The social media campaign for This Place Will Become Your Tomb has been shrouded in mystery. Apparently, the faceless, nameless collective worships an ancient deity named Sleep who sends visions to the lead singer, known as Vessel. It’s an okay premise, similar to Ghost’s debut a decade ago. That’s not where the similarities stop, but Sleep Token is unique enough to carve out their own identity. This is no throwback or worship act. It’s a modern twist on the gothic formula.

This new 12-track offering delves further into the enigmatic universe that SLEEP TOKEN made for themselves with the release of their 2019 debut, Sundowning, and is set to push boundaries and blur genres, whilst retaining their much loved signature sound.
