Significant Zagrosian DNA is widespread across the Indian population, with higher concentrations typically observed in northwestern groups and some southern communities. This ancestry entered the subcontinent through early migrations of Iranian hunter-gatherers and later farmers, who are a major founding source of the Indus Valley Civilization.
Overview of Zagrosian ancestry in India
Source population: Zagrosian DNA originates from early hunter-gatherers and Neolithic farmers of the Zagros Mountains region in modern-day Iran.
Formation of the Indus Valley Civilization (IVC): Around 12,000 to 8,000 years ago, this group migrated into South Asia and mixed with indigenous Ancient Ancestral South Indians (AASI) to form the population of the Indus Valley Civilization.
Expansion and dilution: Following the decline of the IVC, these groups moved across the subcontinent, mixing further with local populations. Later, gene flow from Central Asian Steppe pastoralists created the distinct genetic patterns seen across India today, including the higher concentration of Zagrosian ancestry in the north.
Regional differences in Zagrosian DNA
Northwestern India
High concentration: Populations in the northwest, including groups like Khatris, Rajputs, Kambojas, Aroras, and Sindhis, often show higher percentages of Zagrosian ancestry, with estimates ranging from 35–50%.
Reason: This area was the heartland of the IVC, and these groups are considered to be direct descendants of the Indus Valley people who had a higher proportion of Zagrosian ancestry.
Southern India
Significant presence: Many South Indian communities, including landowning groups like Vellalars, Reddys, and Kammas, also carry a high percentage of Zagrosian ancestry, sometimes estimated in the 40–50% range.
Dravidian association: Some studies suggest a link between early Zagrosian migrations and the spread of Dravidian languages, which flourished in the Indus Valley before later migrations.
Comparison to north: While some southern groups have high Zagrosian ancestry, some studies indicate that on average, certain northwestern groups retain a slightly higher proportion.
Modern genetic makeup Today's Indian population is the result of multiple ancient migrations and admixture events. While the Zagrosian component is foundational, it exists alongside ancestry from other groups, most notably Ancient Ancestral South Indians (AASI) and, in North India, Steppe pastoralists.
