Been doing multiple tutorials and now want to undertake a personal project.
I would like to be able to control Winamp externally with my Arduino via serial communication. Problem being I know how to send the signal to my PC, however I do not know how to go
about receiving/processing the signal.

Would just like something similar to media functions on the keyboard (skip, play/pause, stop). I realize I can just alter keybinds in Winamp directly and utilise these functions, however I would prefer to be able to do this via arduino (even just for the sake of learning).

I too am curious about this -- what are the typical methods/languages used to read Serial data and then enact Windows events?
I suppose you would start by having the Arduino output to serial, then based on the Serial characters read, you would have to trigger Windows actions -- How?

Despite that, every time I play a new song the player opens the bowser tab and loads some page into it, and when I am not connected to the Internet it displays a error page with every new song. Kind of annoying.

If you wish to prevent winamp from connecting to the internet you can simply disable it in windows firewall. Be aware this will prevent it from adding album covers, album and artists details, etc to the library and prevent it from letting you know when the updates are available.

If you wish to turn off the library pan, you will notice everything from the play and pause buttons to the adjustments to the audio levels is in a separate window you can pull away from the whole thing, you can simply click the X in the top right of any of the pans and they wont appear when it starts up unless you enable them again.

Perhaps you heard the news, shed a tear of nostalgia, made an off-hand llama-whipping joke and moved on. Winamp deserves more than that. This is a legendary piece of software whose responsibility for the digital music revolution goes hand-in-hand with Napster. Illegal file sharing services merely provided the tunes. Winamp let us play them.

To my surprise, installing Winamp 5.66 was painless. This is Winamp late into its retirement, no longer so hell-bent on making money through bloatware. The default installation settings are useful and minimally invasive, and the software started up quickly. It only took a minute to get my music library scanned and listed.

Besides, desktop MP3 software is not as valuable anymore. Today you can stream any song you want through Spotify, or take your pick of online radio services such as Pandora and Songza. You can put your entire collection on Google Play Music and listen through any web browser. All of these services also exist on smartphones and tablets, which themselves are overtaking laptops and desktops for leisurely things like listening to music.

I have often wondered what is the slowest 486 CPU which will play full scale mp3s in Windows without skipping using Winamp. I am using the Windows NT Taskmanager in Windows NT 4.0 to monitor CPU load. I have SP6a, the 6a SRP, and all post-SRP updates installed on my 486. I am using a DTK PKM-0033S motherboard with 1024 KB cache, 128 MB memory, and a SCSI HDD. Sound card is an AWE64Gold ISA.

i also believe that winplay3 does no good compared to winamp, except for the lack of directsound support(thats the same as winamp with waveout). but i am not sure if it would be perform better on 486 rigs.

directsound won't do any good unless you use a pci soundcard with hardware audio acceleration.
i always wanted to try playing mp3 with pci soundcard on a 486 rig, but its still on the long way being put together, hopefully can be done in 2-3 months. would you give it a try?

Could you use a Monster Sound MX400 on a 486? would the drivers load?
That card boosted about MP3 Acceleration, I dunno if was anything but market hype, but its in the Diamond wiki here.

guess quake is not very good at making use of directsound, compared to more modern winamp.
so maybe you can give it another try, and try some other pci soundcards like ymf724 and ess. i also want to try that later, but it can take a few more months for me to finish collecting 486 parts that i need.

I remember this too with ESS Canyon3D cards. That's the DSP on MX400. The problem is I don't think it works. You see, you would need either an audio program that accesses the DSP or a DIrectshow audio codec that communicates with it. I haven't heard of any successes.

Interesting. I remember having Windows 98 on my Dell CPi, and Desperados was laggy. Later I upgraded to 2k, and it was smooth. I presumed WinNT obviously had a performance increase.. I guess that was not it at all? ?

Your results indicate that the X5-133 has slightly worse FPU than the Cyrix 5x86-100, which is in line with the results from the ultimate 486 benchmarks. I'm not sure if you using a different Winamp version plays any factor here, but I expected X5-133 FPU results to be a little worse, like 84-87% usage for 128 kbps.

For those of you who want to be notified of plug-in updates without having to check the releases page you can subscribe to my plug-in update RSS feed which is updated when i make any plug-in updates (for more information see here).

As a quick update, I'm progressing on things at the new site and blog (which is the best place to follow what's going on) and today I've moved my existing Winamp download mirror to the new site.

All applicable links should now be being correctly redirected so if you think something is broken, please let me know, thanks.

It's been quiet from me as a lot has happened and a lot has changed in some respects and not much has changed in others. As such I'm no longer involved directly with Winamp or SHOUTcast (which happened in mid-September 2015) and over 2 years since the sale of Winamp (and SHOUTcast), there's no new release of Winamp with as far as I can tell most of the work I had done being dropped (not helped that developement work was halted mid-process so yes things in the source repository were incomplete and somewhat buggy in places).

For me I'm still looking for what direction things will take me with a number of ideas that I'm looking into the viability off after having taken some time off to re-charge the batteries as the last few years have been pretty much non-stop with minimal time-off (which doesn't make for a happy me at times).

So what about me and Winamp, it's best to have a look at the new site and blog I've setup in the last few days which I've still to work out all the details off. This site will remain for specific updates for my own plug-ins with the new site more focused on some version of a 'patched' Winamp release. In the meanwhile, it's going to take me a few weeks to get back up to speed on Winamp plug-in development and trying to sort out what I'd said I'd do for some of the plug-ins back on Monday 16 December 2013.

So what's going on? Well i'm working on Winamp and SHOUTcast (as i was doing for the last few years prior to the sale of Winamp) and due to that, i've just not had the time to work on any of my plug-ins. This means a lot of the plug-in links are still broken and are probably going to remain like that for the forseeable future (as i'm only providing versions which are Winamp 5.64+ compatible).

I know this is not going to be liked but as everything here is porivided for free as my free time allows (which is heavily limited nowadays), there's not much more i can offer. So i can only apologise for the inconvenience but i'd hope it's understood that free time is limited with what i'm employed to work on (plus a number of the plug-ins are / will be rolled into Winamp 6.x natively as probably should have been done instead of needing to install them separately).

Finally, i've put up a mirror of the Winamp 5.666 build 3516 downloads as well as the required plug-in updates needed to have a stable Winamp install. This can be found here.

Am in the process of migrating everything over to winampplugins.co.uk after the last decade on the hosting provided by Nunzio (which has been much appreciated). Not a lot else to mention as it is still unclear what is going to happen with Winamp, etc under the new ownership, hence no plug-in updates for a while (plus i need a break after the final few months with making the 5.66x release).

And the following at the plug-ins which i've had the most requests (in no particular order) to be brought back as part of the update work (which has somewhat stalled due to the Winamp v5.66x releases):

  • Repeater
  • ML Enqueue and Play
  • Mute Hotkey
  • ML Bookmark Categoriser
  • Three Mode Repeat
  • Playlist File Remover
  • Taskbar Text Mod
  • Next on Stop

Wednesday 02 October 2013For the seemingly few of you crazy people out there still interested in Winamp plug-ins, i'm in the process of bringing some of mine back to life after the removal in February 2013 (and the hiatus which began in June 2012).

I will be updating some of them to be Winamp v5.64+ compatible as i made some changes to the plug-in APIs (having worked directly on Winamp for the prior 3 years which is why my plug-in development dropped off) which helps to provide a better localisation experience (having also helped implement the localisation support for v5.5) which in the age of modern unicode compatible OSes is better to have i believe. It also gives me an excuse to do a code review and fix things which i've learnt over the last few years which will help to resolve any remaining stability issues with the plug-ins.

Otherwise, things are unlikely to be like they were in the peak of my plug-in development a few years ago (2004-2007) and the number of plug-ins coming back will be less than was previously available as i've since implemented some of them natively into the Winamp releases this year (currently consisting of v5.64 and v5.65).

And with that, remember that if you like the plug-ins, a donation to show your appreciation is always appreciated (and if not, a quick email to say thank you is also appreciated).

p.s. The site will be a bit broken for a while as i work through which parts need to be kept and which aren't needed anymore.
