MapInstall 4.2.0 is broken. You will get it by updating to Basecamp 4.7.0 - however also individual update can happen. MapInstall 4.3.2 (part of Basecamp 4.8.4) is fixed - but so far only available to Apple Mac OS x users - not for Windows. Note however - Basecamp 4.8.4 only runs stable in english - translated version are very buggy!
Garmin released a new version of Basecamp - 4.7.0 - in order to remove many features that were not in accordance with the GDPR regulation. Actually it's not that 4.6.2 is wrong here - it's that there were a few web services - that Garmin switched off - and those were interlinked into 4.6.2 - so that actually in 4.6.2 some functionality is not working anymore - I could on a quick check however not discover any actual difference otherwise in relation to the GDPR regulations - so 4.6.2 is no different in this regard to 4.7.0 - well and new privacy page/EULA of course).
The big problem is that Basecamp 4.7.0 also ships an updated version of Garmin MapInstall - and that version is broken in so far that it does not reliably/correctly send any maps in .img format anymore! This also applies to original older garmin maps.
On Mac OS x the problem with MapInstall 4.2.0 is that it will often crash while sending maps. This got fixed with MapInstall 4.3.2. Do not update to Basecamp 4.8.x if using Basecamp in any language but english however - as the translated versions have countless serious bugs.
Actually right now only a part of the overview map is sent - it would be nice if Garmin could send the overview maps in general too - as right now they are only used on Desktop. Would actually speed up the GPS devices a bit - especially if you have no activated Basemap on your device.
If you chose to downgrade Basecamp and already created tracks/routes with 4.7.0 you will need to restore them. While updating/downgrading does not delete any of your data - routes/tracks that you planned with Basecamp 4.7.0 will not appear in Basecamp 4.6.2 after downgrade - only routes/tracks that you had planned before the 4.7.0 update will show up.
Deinstall All Garmin tools/programs via Windows "Change or Remove a Program". Then delete the Garmin Folder in "C:\Program Files (x86)". Then Reinstall all Garmin tools/Programs and make sure to use old enough versions (as linked here).
IMHO you do not need to clean the registry of any Garmin entry, nor do you need to remove any Garmin folders that are somewhere else then Program Files folders (so far all Garmin tools are x86 and not 64 bit - it's possible this will change in future - so then also delete Garmin folder inside "C:\Program Files".
You can still downgrade to 4.6.3 for the missing functionality. However MapInstall 4.3.2 or later is fixed (at least with the download directly from Garmin or from here - the Mac Appstore version sometimes does not update MapInstall) - so just make sure not to use Basecamp 4.7. and if you upgrade to Basecamp 4.8.4 or later.
While windows users have good alternatives to Garmin MapInstall - on OS x the only real alternative is to use mkgmap.jar to create gmapsupp.img files. That is not so easy to do and requires Java JDK properly configured. However MapInstall 4.3.2 is fixed - so either downgrade to Basecamp 4.6.3 or upgrade to Basecamp 4.8.4 or later.
you have to move the folders from the .7z download. The structure of Cyprus and Europe inside the Product1 folder has to be the same. Simple as that. Just that you will need way more 6* and 7* (or 9* if you want 10m contourlines) folders in there.
Ever since the 2019.x map updates have been published by Garmin, I've been having trouble downloading them. In each case I had to attempt the updates several times before they would eventually work. It's happing again with the new 2020.10 update which was released January 30th.
What basically happens in my case is that the update starts normally and during step 2 of 2 it hangs for some time at 49.7% (first image) before eventually failing with an error message (second image). I've tried this on two different computers and it doesn't matter whether I'm attempting to install the updated map on the computer, the device, or both. Same result each time.
Previously, it would eventually succeed when I tried it again several days later, but that has not been the case so far. I'm planning on launching a support request with Garmin next week, but wanted to see if anyone here has been experiencing the same thing. I couldn't find anything on Google specifically related to the 49.7% level mine is failing at, and the generic troubleshooting article from Garmin has not solved the problem.
Steve . . probably not your issue, but.... have you tried doing a total shut down and start up of your Garmin? I've noted that GE does not see that the unit has been updated until the unit is disconnected and rebooted and runs the updates itself. That brings up the "there are new updates, do you want to restart your device?" (or something like that). Then restarting (for the second time) loads up the new updates and now when hooking back up to your computer of choice, GE now sees the updates have been applied to the unit and no longer tires to download them (again and again and again) onto the unit.
Try downloading the the new map to COMPUTER ONLY then use MapInstall or MapSource to install to your GPS. If the new (large) map update goes onto your computer easily & without issue then suspect a full GPS drive.
Personally I NEVER do a direct map download to my GPS as I download to computer 'only' then install either the full map or usually just my part of the country map as (I don't need strange islands or deep in Mexico for my everyday usage.
I also, usually install my home state & the states around my state to the GPS proper (main drive), then install the remainder of the mapping to the SD card that is in my GPS. I then, ONLY update the state ( & surrounding states) every update & update the remainder of the mapping every 2 nd or 3rd update (unless I am planning an out of state trip, then I upload the remainder before the trip.
As Dirt Rider mentioned above, since your update starts and then fails to finish I have suspicions that might be your problem. I was nearly running short on memory a year ago and added some memory to my Zumo 660. I've slept since installing the added memory, but I had no problems. I recently updated my maps on a Windows 10 PC with no hiccups.
I appreciate all the replies. It's helping a lot. Just to answer the latest recommendations, I am using Windows 10 with all the latest updates applied. I'm also using Sophos antivirus which I am currently testing an update with it disabled. The behavior of updating the maps on the computer is the same as when I try to do it on the device. I am going to look at free space on the device and do a hard reboot (pull battery) one more time to test. And, finally, with GE and Basecamp, I have to take the whole map update on the device. The previous ways of using Mapsource, Mapinstall with my Zumo 550 don't seem to work the same with the Nav V.
One possibility - If you have allowed Basecamp to "upgrade" to version 4.7.0, a new version of MapInstall (used by Express in the background) was also installed, which is known to create various problems. Details and work-arounds are here: -4-7-0/.
