Artifacts appearing in images on output of Thinreports

Greetings,

I am running thinreports via the thinreports-rails gem.  For the most part, everything is fine.  However, when an image that is simply a monochromatic "fill"  appears on the output, "phantom" dashed-lines appear.  (see attached original and from thinreports pdf output). 

Has anyone run into this?

I'm guessing this occurs from compression? If so, how can I turn off compression?
