Good morning! I have more Thinkwalks for you.

Before I talk the walks, you may wish to know that for the past 12 months the average temperature on the surface of our only planet* surpassed 1.5°C above pre-industrial averages. In the postscript, I offer a small thing you can do to help address this.

*Don’t give me that sci-fi story about how we’ll colonize Mars as a Plan(et) B. If we can’t keep this planet, possessing all that’s needed for life, safe for humanity, why could and how would we build a welcoming world from scratch on desolate Mars? Humans co-evolved with recent earth and need its complex ecosystems to survive. The Mars dream seems to me just a way of getting investors excited to fund other megarich lunatics. Weird to say, but Earth on fire is more habitable than Mars with untold trillions in “investment."

3 more THINKWALKS

Reminder: There’s a Presidio Hike in two days (see below). It’s not full yet.

And I’ll offer a repeat of a recent dune-themed walk many of you wanted. It’ll be on the 21st of this month. Plus a new walk added that will focus on former salt marshes in the South of Market and Mission Creek areas.

So there are three opportunities:

1) July 11th, Thursday (5 SPOTS LEFT)
Presidio Stream Hike
9 a.m. near Palace of Fine Arts
Picnic stop for lunch (brown bag &/or shareables)
End 1:30 p.m. near Crissy Field
5 miles, not very flat

This Saturday's walk is FULL! (July 13th)

2) July 21st, Sunday (10 SPOTS LEFT)
Dune History & Groundwater (Divis area).
10:45 a.m. at the Panhandle
End at 1 p.m. at Duboce Park
1.75 miles, mostly flat

3) July 27th, Saturday (10 SPOTS LEFT)
China Basin shoreline & Mission Bay salt marshes
9:30 a.m. at Mission Creek Park
End at 12:30 p.m. at Yerba Buena Gardens where a free music festival will be starting!
3 miles, all flat

Maximum of 12 people per walk. I’ll let you know specific meeting spot once you sign up.

Payment — your donation
At the end of your Thinkwalk, please make a donation on a sliding scale to support my educational work and keep me in SF. Suggested is $10 to $40 per person, based on what you can afford, to be paid by Venmo, cash, check, PayPal, 24 carrots, golden beets, etc.

Larger donations not connected to a walk or map are tax deductible through my nonprofit. Ask for details.

Can’t make those dates? Request a Thinkwalk for any specific date you know you’re free. I’ll post for others to join. It’s the best way to ensure you get a spot.

See ya!

Important climate activism alert for THIS MORNING:

At 11 a.m. today, July 9, we’re gathering to rock CITI with rocking chairs.
Elders Week Climate March in downtown SF.
Live music, singing, puppets and did I mention…a rocking chair brigade!?
Third Actors will provide and collect signed Costco “Cut Up Your Citi Credit Card” postcards.

A joint effort of:
SF Bay Area Third Act

1000 Grandmothers.

Meet THIS MORNING at 11 at Harry Bridges Plaza (that weird “island” in the street right in front of the Ferry Building).

Low key, non confrontational. Yup.

We'll convene then walk a few blocks to CITI and rock it with rocking chairs, multigenerationally.

Objective: Bring attention to Citi bank's close ties with the fossil fuel industrial complex. Here's more info.
