Hi, I'm new to Ruby (but learning fast) and I am working in a project that will need fast search and faceted navigation. So Sphinx seems the right candidate to do the job ;)

First I'm somehow confused about the lots of apparent duplicated projects. What's the difference between these 3 projects? Do they have different limitations features appart from those of Sphinx? Any of these project is a "transparent" wrapper of the Sphinx client? Am I asking noob questions :P ?
  • Thinking Sphinx
  • Riddle
  • Ultrasphinx
Second, and taking into account the above questions, there is my App case. It is done with Rails. it crawls some data using Rake tasks and from there it updates the rail's Models. My app stores events, with titles, dates, venues and categories. So Ideally I would like to search based in a date range and in a category orderer by time of the day. What would be the ideal fit for my case?

Thank you very much :D

Hi Mauro

Riddle is a pure Ruby wrapper for Sphinx, and both UltraSphinx and Thinking Sphinx combine Riddle and ActiveRecord/Rails. From what I understand, UltraSphinx isn't under active development - I know Evan Weaver has recommended people switch to TS in the past.

As for what you want to do, it sounds like Sphinx and Thinking Sphinx will suit your needs fine. You can filter by ranges and sort by times easily.

Cheers
