to Thinking about Games
I always feel I have much more to ponder and say about games. But I'm
sure I end up repeating myself pretty often. So I keep hoping others
will say something I can reply to, in order to keep things fresh.
At this point, I'm guessing that hardly anybody besides me really
likes thinking about games in the meandering "philosophical" way that
I often do.
Some like talking about their *experiences* with games--playing them,
designing them, collecting them, or whatever.
Others (e.g., game designers and authors of books on games) like to
seriously explore specific questions about games and game playing--but
they intend to use their findings in an article or book or in their
next game design. Something practical.
The kind of "thinking about games" I do is, in the opinion of many,
mere navel gazing. All I do, basically, is reflect on how I feel
about this game or that, or how I'd classify games or game players.
It's almost all subjective, and it probably doesn't really lead
anywhere.
When I formed this group, I had hoped to find like-minded people who'd
share their own subjective musings. Then I could compare my "gaming
worldview" to theirs and maybe modify mine in light of what others
have to say. But others are, understandably, more interested in real-
world happenings than rumination.
I've backed off on posting here mainly because I don't want it to just
be a personal blog (I have one of those, and I rarely post anything to
it).
