Subject: Your involvement Towards Earthquake Safety in India

Dear Friends,

Two days back, an earthquake in Afghanistan sent tremors across North India including Delhi, Gurgaon, Noida, Ghaziabad, Punjab, Himachal Pradesh and Jammu and Kashmir. As you might be aware, more than 50% of Indian land (densely populated), is vulnerable to earthquakes where an earthquake may happen anytime. We have seen huge loss of life and property in our country due to earthquakes in last few decades itself. The hazard scenario is increasing with rising population density and upcoming of not so well planned infrastructures. Recently we have seen how Nepal suffered. We wake up only when a disaster happens and alertness diminishes in next few months or years. A little vigilance and preparedness BEFORE the earthquake can save many lives and reduce the damage to a great extent.

Let us hope for the best and do our best!

Thanking you
warm regards
Sreevalsa

THE URGENCY FELT FOR THIS PETITION BY US

April 25 Nepal earthquake was not a surprise to genuine earthquake scientists and many scientists have been warning about Himalayan earthquakes long before. Still many believe that a major earthquake is yet to hit North India. After deeply analyzing the earthquake data of India and adjoining areas from 250 BC to 2010 AD using various probabilistic models, our studies at IISc has clearly shown that Himalayan belt especially Nepal Bihar border, Kashmir, North East India and Andaman are highly hazardous for next 50 years. This has been published in reputed journals and we have raised our concerns at various platforms.
Pondering on the seriousness of the issue, I even took extreme step to refuse my PhD degree from IISc to bring awareness among policymakers and public, in 2013.

On 15th January 2014, we wrote to National Disaster management Authority, Govt of India inquiring about the measures being taken by NDMA to prepare ourselves to face awaiting earthquake in Himalayan region. Seeking special attention on the matter, articulated some measures to be taken on urgent basis. Unfortunately very little is done in our country for earthquake preparedness. Usually the aftermaths of a disaster bring solidarity among the members of the community. There is a need to bring this spirit of togetherness and alertness well before a disaster so that a community can be prepared well to face the disaster and thus reduce the loss of life and properties. And while every community has numerous short-term priorities, it is important to keep in mind that disasters like earthquakes destroy all progress a community has been making in every area.

PS: Two news reports that came up after Nepal earthquake, first one little exaggerated as we cannot predict the exact timing of earthquake, but for sure can point out the high hazard levels in various regions for next 50 years or 100 years.

POLICY MAKERS TAKE THESE ISSUES TOO GENERAL AND DO NOT GIVE MUCH IMPORTANCE AMONG THEIR PRIORITIES. LARGE PORTION OF INDIA FACING HIGH SEISMIC THREAT, THERE IS URGENT NEED FOR PEOPLE LIKE ME AND YOU TO RAISE OUR VOICE TO BRING THE VIGILANCE IN ADDITION TO OUR TECHNICAL CONTRIBUTION.
