Gifting Season in Malaysia

The best way for retailers to catch holiday shoppers’ attention used to be through beautiful Christmas window dressing. However, things have changed over the years and now, the most important window for retailers are the computer and mobile screens.

The internet is where people learn about a retailer and a brand. It is also where they start to explore, discover and research their holiday gifts. This week, we will unwrap the search habits of holiday shoppers in Malaysia.

Insight #1 - Based on Google search trends, consumers start their holiday shopping as early as November - one month before Christmas and New Year’s. Searches grew 31% in the fourth quarter of 2013 versus the same period of last year. Since shoppers are starting early, retailers should also start their marketing efforts as early as possible.

Insight #3 - It’s never too late to start thinking about holiday gifts. Searches tend to spike 5 days before Christmas and New Year’s, indicating a surge in last minute shoppers who are looking for ideas. For marketers who are advertising online, don’t forget to adjust your budget and bid for the most important days of December.
